SAT 00:30 Fry's English Delight (b012wdjh)
Series 4
Class
Stephen Fry's idiosyncratic meander along the byways of English takes him into dangerous territory: Language and Class. Is it still the contentious issue it used to be?
In the Nineteen Fifties a famous distinction was drawn between what came to be called "U" and "Non-U" words, expressions and pronunciations that were supposed to give a pretty clear indication as to which class the speaker belonged. That's all old hat now surely? Or are there still differences between the way the social classes speak, and are perceived?
Once the social boundaries were very clear. Now they seem a lot more porous. So have we changed the way we speak to cope with social changes? The answer - according to experts in the programme seems to be "yes, but not as much as you might think".
With the help of a socio-linguist, a waspish columnist, a professional voice coach and Yorkshire poet Ian Macmillan, Stephen looks at the history of class and speech, and finds that changes have been subtle. Yet for many old tribalisms remain.
Macmillan helps show how the issues always seem to be debated in a metropolitan context. They take on a very different hue if seen from elsewhere.

Ethan Frome is one of Edith Wharton's most enduring and powerful stories.
Set against the cold, grey, bleakness of a New England winter. Ethan Frome scrapes a living from his woodlot whilst trapped in an unhappy marriage with his hypochondriac wife, Zeena. A ray of light enters Ethan's life when his wife's cousin Mattie arrives to help. His life is transformed as he falls in love with Mattie but their fate is determined by their circumstances and the stifling conventions of the time.
Ethan Frome was deemed shocking when first published as it appeared to condone infidelity. What many readers did not know was that many of the novella's themes mirrored real events in the life of Edith Wharton. Her own story is told in 'The Jinx Element' that explores her own sexless marriage and a passionate affair that begun when she was 47.

Now a writer herself, Mary's recollections draw on extracts from the book she typed - Jean's autobiography Smile Please. Two other women in Jean's life, her editor Diana Athill and her friend Diana Melly, also add their own memories of the author at this final, troubled stage of her life.

Rose Tremain - The Darkness of Wallis Simpson
A play imagining the last days of Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor, the woman for whom King Edward VIII gave up the throne of England in 1936. Wallis is now 79 years old. Edward has been dead for fourteen years.
The play pivots upon a single dramatic conceit: that Wallis, now entering the darkness of approaching death, has forgotten every single thing about Edward. Her entire part in what an American journalist once called "the greatest story since the Resurrection" has completely gone from her mind. Other moments in her life she can vividly recall, but the world-shaking events at the heart of it are lost to her - apparently forever.
She lies bedridden in her house in Paris. A lawyer friend, Maitre Suzanne Blum has taken charge of her care. But, believing that Wallis has deliberately chosen to forget her "role in history", Blum is determined to force her to remember this vital bit of the past, before she dies.

Andy and Pod begin their quest to compile 'Pod's History of the Ashes in 100 Objects' at the British Museum where they meet Neil MacGregor and the lady who yodels at the beginning of the Radio 4 programme.
Pod only agrees to continue with Andy's show on the condition he gets to visit Oz and win his attractive wife Jaqcui back from the hairy arms of an Aussie cricketer. On the flight Down Under, Pod shows Andy the historically significant 69 tins of Fosters with which he's just set the all-time England-to-Australia-beer-drinking record.
They visit the Brisbane Museum of Cricket where they see the very phone directory Shane Warne used to call up nurses at the Brisbane School of Nursing. Pod and Andy then accidentally create a diplomatic incident by letting slip that both Heartbeat and The Bill have been cancelled in the UK, devastating Australian TV schedules for decades.
This upsets the Aussie cricket team who are trying to warm up at the first Ashes Test Match in Brisbane, with the encouragement of a team of cheerleaders led by none other than Pod's wife Jacqui. Pod notes that the pile of vomit he left on the outfield in 1989 is still there and suggests it to Andy as one of the 100 objects, although to be honest he's more interested in the odds that a local bookie is offering on the chances of him and Jacqui getting back together.
Pod persuades Jacqui to take him back as the winnings on the bet he's just placed will more than make up for his shortcomings as a lover, a man and a human being.
Andy reluctantly returns to England having failed almost completely in the task to collect 100 objects but with a £50 note as his cut of Pod's gambling winnings.

WED 06:30 Hits of the Blitz (b00tn8sz)
Paul Morley tries to discover what people were really listening to during the Blitz of WWII, and finds that there is much more to it than 'We'll Meet Again'.
We all think we know what people were dancing and listening to in their homes, in shelters and in night spots, but Morley hears hit tunes of the time which might come as a surprise to many of us. Morley goes in search of what these hit tunes tell us about how people were really feeling and coping during those difficult days.
If you had eavesdropped on a living room in 1940, you were more likely to have caught a burst of 'When You Wish Upon A Star' from Pinocchio than 'White Cliffs of Dover'. He speaks to Tony Benn about his memories of popular music during the Blitz as he experienced it, and what other members of the public were really humming during this time of crisis. He speaks to social historian Juliet Gardiner, musicologist Tim Healey and music therapist Stewart Wood about the mood of the time and why the music that evokes the war to us is often not the music that was actually being listened to.
Morley goes in search of what people were singing and dancing to in the Cafe de Paris in London's West End on the night that it was bombed in March 1940, and finds that it was not the American Lindy Hop swing that many of us picture of when we think of nightlife during the Blitz. In fact, it was a world where people still did the foxtrot and the waltz to numbers such as 'Oh Johnny Oh,' played by the band.

Inglorious Barters
Written by Phil Whelans
A queue for the loo and a rogue backrub threaten to blow up the colony. And just what is Lillian's "Special Skill"...?
A sitcom set on a shiny new planet where we ask the question - if humankind were to colonize space, is it destined to succumb to self-interest, prejudice and infighting? (By the way, the answer's "yes". Sorry.)
Welcome to the colony. We're aware that having been in deep cryosleep for 73 years, you may be in need of some supplementary information.
Personnel
Unfortunately, Burrows the leader of the colony has died on the voyage, so his Number 2, Brian (Nicholas Lyndhurst) is now in charge. He's a nice enough chap, but no alpha male, and his desire to sort things out with a nice friendly meeting infuriates the colony's Chief Physician Lillian (Vicki Pepperdine - "Getting On"), who'd really rather everyone was walking round in tight colour-coded tunics and saluting each other. She's also in charge of Project Adam, the plan to conceive and give birth to the first colony-born baby. Unfortunately, the two people hand-picked for this purpose - Carol and Richard - were rather fibbing about being a couple, just to get on the trip.
Add in an entirely unscrupulous Chief Scientist, Mason and also Archer, an idiot maintenance man who believes he's an "empath" rather than a plumber, and you're all set to answer the question - if humankind were to colonize space, is it destined to succumb to self-interest, prejudice and infighting? (By the way, the answer's "yes". Sorry.)

The Girl in the Picture
Kim Phuc, subject of an iconic picture from the Vietnam War, tells her story as she's reunited with the ITN reporter who helped save her life 38 years ago.
The image of a nine year old girl screaming as she ran naked down a road in Trang Bang after suffering extreme burns in a Napalm chemical attack became one of the most famous photographs of the Vietnam War. But what happened to the 'Girl in the Picture'?
In an emotional meeting, former ITN reporter Christopher Wain - who helped to save her life that day - is reunited with Kim for the first time in 38 years.
They recall the events of June 8th 1972 and Kim hears for the first time the lengths to which Chris went to get her life-saving treatment.
She tells how Nick Ut's Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph has helped and haunted her in equal measure. She explains how she was recruited as a 'symbol of war' before finally escaping Government control by fleeing to Canada.
She managed to live a normal life for a while but was discovered by the press again in the 1990s. She soon realised she had to take control of the photograph and decided to use her fame to help others by establishing a charity for child victims of war called 'The Kim Phuc Foundation'.
The burns Kim suffered in 1972 left her scarred for life and still take their toll on her body. She's in constant pain and has to take regular breaks. But it doesn't stop her living a busy life.
As part of the programme, Kim also meets Ali Abbas, who lost both his arms and sixteen members of his family in the Iraq War. The pair share their experiences and Kim offers him advice on living a normal life and finding a way to forgive.
The programme is presented by Christopher Wain.
