SAT 01:30 Star Wars on the South Bank (b00rtbg2)
Almost thirty years ago serious plans were made to simulate a Mars colony on the Southbank of the River Thames. Such an outrageous idea would be dismissed outright if it wasn't dreamt up by one of Britain's greatest social reformers - Michael Young.
Lord Young of Dartington, who died in 2002, was committed to building institutions dedicated to social improvement. He initiated or played a major role in creating the Consumers' Association, the Open University, as well as Labour's 1945 manifesto - Let us face the future. But then in 1984 he launched the Argo Venture, a collective of Britain's finest scientists, thinkers and space experts who were calling for the planting of human colonies in space. His son, the author and journalist Toby Young, asks was the Argo Venture an idea too far?
He recruited an amazing cast of volunteers; the Scientist James Lovelock, the astronomer Lord Martin Rees and the Science writer Nigel Calder amongst others. Young's legacy was indisputably great but was this latter-day Georgian folly, born of a grandee legendary enthusiasm? Was the whole project set for failure? Could a serious British Mars Programme exemplify the spirit of the early 21st century?
In this programme Toby Young talks to Lord Martin Rees, Professor Colin Pillinger and hears from passionate advocates of Martian colonisation, but what was his father looking for in Space?

The Pocket AA Milne
The Arrival of Blackman's Warbler
How to survive dinner parties by becoming an expert on absolutely anything.
A hundred years ago, A.A. Milne was honing his writing skills as Assistant Editor of Punch with his regular humorous columns and essays. Perfect gems of the form, his stories not only delight in the spirit of the age, they also transcend the years with their insights.
Parodying the country-house weekend, with its uncomfortable joys of evening games such as "Definitions", "The Complete Kitchen" and "High Jinks at Happy-Thought Hall", Milne captures the absurdity and vacuousness of characters in transition from idle youth to the tedium of adulthood.
Of course, no country house weekend would have been complete without "the little play for amateurs", perfectly formed examples of which Milne supplies in read-aloud form.
When he re-published this collection of his humorous stories much later in his career, he observed that for years his younger self was "a model to which I was failing to live up... in fact he became, as one's past is bound to become, both a rival and a millstone." His talent for comic observation that was to become evident in his tales of Winnie-the-Pooh is obvious in these essays.
As he wrote himself by way of introduction:
"This little book contains the best of what my rival was writing thirty years ago. I contemplate him now with detachment. I have grown to appreciate his quality. So impartial am I become, that I am torn between a desire to tell him how very, very good he is, and a desire to re-write his book for him. But I shall do neither, leaving him to speak for himself."

Swings
"Yes, the ghosts you see at night, they're the souls - the auras, if you like - of good people who didn't deserve to die. That's why they're full of regret, and frightening. Ghosts we see in broad daylight are the ones whose death were right and fair - they've been redeemed by death. They were evil while alive..."

In Therapy
Written by multi award-winning writer Carl Gorham, creator of cult TV animation show "Stressed Eric", the series explores what happens when two Jacobite soldiers from 1745 are found alive and well in a cave in Perthshire and have to be integrated into modern Scottish society by English academic Andrew Merron.
Friction between the two Jacobite soldiers comes to a head and results in a bust-up with broadswords. This prompts anthropologist Andrew Merron to introduce them to the modern world of therapy. The two soldiers can't agree who should have therapy first; they can't even agree how they should decide who should have therapy first. It is only when they are forced to live separately, with a dreary cousin of Merron's and his fussy Uncle that Rab and Macdonald start to realise each other's true merits.

1, The Poetical Policeman
Mr JG Reeder has the mind of a criminal, using it to uncover the peculiar circumstances surrounding a bank robbery, the death of the night-watchman and the part in the plot played by his beautiful daughter.
This first of four stories provides useful insight into the past of Mr JG Reeder, whose novel methods bring the criminals of 1920s London to justice.
Read by David Horovitch.
Edgar Wallace is best known for his popular detective and suspense stories which earned him the title, "King of the Modern Thriller."
Although created at roughly the same time, Mr JG Reeder is the diametric opposite of Sam Spade, Philip Marlow and Mike Hammer. He is a shabbily dressed, diffident civil servant who prefers a cup of tea and a slice of seed cake to a shot of something stronger.
Reeder is a uniquely English detective. An apparent fuddy-duddy working in some obscure capacity in the Public Prosecutor's office, he actually has a razor-sharp intellect and is a super-sleuth. He solves his mysteries because he fully understands the "criminal mind".

Episode 1
Tragedy strikes at the Opera House in 19th century Paris - home to a fabled ghost.
Starring Anna Massey as Madame Giry, Peter Guinness as The Phantom, James D'Arcy as Raoul de Chagny Helen Goldwyn as Christine Daaé
"The Phantom of the Opera" is a classic tale of murder, romance and suspense in 19th-century Paris. Gaston Leroux's original novel, "Le Fantôme de l'Opéra" was published in 1911 and it's never been out of print since. The subject of countless plays, films and musicals - this is the first adaptation to remaining utterly faithful to the spirit and plot of Leroux's original. There are many sequences here which have never appeared before in any adaptation.
Leroux was a prolific writer in many genres, as well as being a playboy and globetrotter. But he started out as a journalist, which is how he came across the true stories forming the basis for the plot of "The Phantom of the Opera": a misshapen skeleton unearthed in the foundations of the Paris Opera House, a subterranean lake, a fatal accident with the chandelier and, of course, rumours of the Opera Ghost.
This adaptation was the first version to include the correct operatic sequences referred to in the novel: arias from Charles Gounod's Faust and his Romeo et Juliette, and Desdemona's famous aria from Rossini's Otello. These were specially recorded by singers from the ENO and Opera Diva.
In the novel, The Phantom performs a section of his own self-penned opera - Don Juan Triumphant - and this too is included in this adaptation, composed by classical musician Tim Sutton. Tim also wrote a new score for the entire adaptation with a theme tune played by violinist Ruth Rogers.
Freshly translated, dramatised and produced by Barnaby Edwards.

WED 06:30 Britain in Their Sites (b00krsyn)
Episode 3
Tristram Hunt tells the story of architectural change in Britain over 60 years, tracing the country's changing idea of itself through three controversial public building projects.
Tristram tracks the creation of the skyline of Canary Wharf, from the old docks of the Isle of Dogs to the new tall towers of Canada Square, with insight from architects, planners and politicians.
The Isle of Dogs was the subject of thwarted regeneration attempts over the years, until in 1979 Michael Heseltine was put in charge of inner city regeneration in Thatcher's new administration. The government created the London Docklands Development Corporation, introduced 'enterprise zones', relaxed planning legislation and axed business rates for 10 years in an attempt to get investors to build on this near-derelict land.
But British architects had to stand back and watch as American architectural firms won key contracts for the buildings - that is, until their grand masterplans collapsed in the 1990s when major developers went bankrupt.
Today, the skyline of Canary Wharf is one of London's landmarks. Tristram asks what its story tells us about Britain's recent architectural history.

Series 1
Hat
Neil's approach to sartorial elegance is this week's flashpoint for an argument.
What do long term partners really argue about? Sharp new comedy from Frank Skinner. A masterclass in the great art of arguing. Starring Frank Skinner and Katherine Parkinson.
Well observed, clever and funny, Don't Start is a scripted comedy with a deceptively simple premise - an argument. Each week, our couple fall out over another apparently trivial flashpoint - a text from a friend, a trilby and a bad night's sleep. Each week, the stakes mount as Neil and Kim battle with words. But these are no ordinary arguments. The two outdo each other with increasingly absurd images, unexpected literary references (Androcles and the Lion pop up at one point) and razor sharp analysis of their beloved's weaknesses.
Cast:
Neil ..... Frank Skinner
Kim ..... Katherine Parkinson
Producer/Director: Polly Thomas
An Avalon UK production for BBC Radio 4.

As uncertainty and conflict beset our heroes, it puts strains on their new relationship, especially when Copenhagen begins to explore his physical side with really quite a lot of other horses.
Things begin to go less well for the French army and its horses as winter sets in.

Publicity Stunts
Episode 1
Private Detective V I Warshawski is being set up for a murder she didn't commit - of a woman she hardly knew. Read by Buffy Davis.
The victim is a famous crime fiction writer. Her latest book threatens to uncover the shame of a small American town whose dark secrets and those of her tormentor have been buried for decades.
Sara Paretsky has created one of the most popular female sleuths in modern crime fiction. Her heroine, V I Warshawski, is a strong female character in a male-dominated world. V I is comfortable packing heat and trailing nasty suspects but she never loses touch with her basic femininity. Paretsky says of her Warshawski: "I was troubled by the way women were portrayed in (detective fiction) they always seemed either evil or powerless. I thought it was time for a tough, smart, likeable female private investigator".
Producer: Joanne Reardon
Made for BBC Radio 7 and first broadcast in 2003.
FRI 06:30 The Wonderful Weightless World of the Flexidisc (b00sgbcr)
Long before the invention of the MP3, there was a way of getting hold of music, speech, and other audio sensations, free of charge, in the form of flexidiscs. Originally developed in the 1930s to play at 78rpm, by the 1960s, seven-inch, 45rpm flexidiscs were so cheap to produce, and so light and bendy, that they were often given away free with a magazine. In the Soviet Union, though, where flexidiscs were called roentgenizdat, and were recorded on disused medical x-ray sheets, the audio was usually of an illegal nature, such as jazz music, or, later, punk rock. In telling the story of the flexidisc, we'll hear plenty of music, some of which is now valuable (such as the Rolling Stones Exit on Mainstreet Blues, given away with New Musical Express in 1972).
In tracking down the story of flexidiscs, presenter Paul Bayley meets collector Jez Randell, journalist Ian Shirley, and the novelist Tim Lott, who co-founded Flexipop magazine in the early 1980s (which gave away a free flexi with every issue). The programme includes extracts from flexidiscs galore, including several advertisements for products as diverse as crisps, hair pieces and rat poison, music from big band jazz to beat groups to punk rock, and some of the most famous recordings made on flexidisc including Beatles fanclub records, Private Eye's satirical flexidiscs and the sound of humpback whales, from the world's biggest circulation flexidisc ever.
Presenter Paul Bayley previously presented The Strange Parallel World of Christian Pop for Radio 4, which subsequently inspired Frank Cottrell Boyce's radio play The Believers. The producer is Bob Dickinson.

Episode 5
A man who is meek wants to know why he has yet to inherit the earth. The darkly comic world of Victor Lewis-Smith.
Award-winning controversial comedy surfaced on BBC Radio 1 in 1990 in the shape of Victor Lewis-Smith. The writer and producer took a comedy cudgel to the self-satisfied, mid-Atlantic style of the very network he was appearing on - with hoax phone calls, sketches, plus comic takedowns of high profile celebs. It's all deliciously sandwiched between the original jangly Radio 1 jingles made by JAM Creative Productions in Dallas, USA.
Winner of the British Comedy Awards 1990 for Best Radio Comedy.
After making a series of late night programmes for Radio 1, Victor took aim at TV in 1993 with BBC TWO's Inside Victor Lewis Smith, before sparking another stir on Channel 4 in 1998 with TV Offal.
