On Unexpected Elements, we're tumbling down the rabbit hole to uncover the strange and surprising science hidden within the classic story.

We’ll find out how bizzarro land of Lewis Carroll's original novel was inspired by the real scientific discoveries of his time? Dr. Franziska Kohlt tells us how Wonderland made sense of science for children – and we learn about a few scientific theories that have taken inspiration from Alice herself.

We also meet shrinking shrews, get wide-eyed over some adorable animals, and go underground to solve a subatomic puzzle.

Is embryo selection allowing parents to ‘build-a-baby’?

IVF is responsible for about 2% of all births in the United States each year. The revolutionary technology has not only reshaped society's beliefs about fertility, but enabled geneticists and expectant parents to screen for certain genetic conditions and to select and implant the healthiest possible embryos.
Prenatal genetic testing has been championed as a scientific marvel, allowing parents to spare their offspring from certain debilitating, untreatable, and sometimes fatal genetic conditions. But some critics warn that the selecting for genetic characteristics bears a resemblance to eugenics – a discriminatory pseudoscience popularized in the early twentieth century, focused on maximising particular characteristics in the human population.
Geneticist Adam Rutherford from University College London joins us to consider the ethical complexities of genetic screening.

Outlook Mixtape: Eureka! part 1

The dreamers, tinkerers and maverick inventors whose ideas travelled far beyond their expectations.

American engineer Lonnie Johnson helped to develop the stealth bomber and Nasa's Galileo space mission to Jupiter. But the invention he is best known for is the Super Soaker water gun. It's one of the best-selling toys of all time, and made millions of dollars for Lonnie.

The song Under Mi Sleng Teng was a massive Jamaican dancehall hit in the 80s, and the electronic sample it used was borrowed by lots of other artists too. Its sound changed the direction of Jamaican music, but the sample itself had been created in Japan five years before. The woman behind it was pianist Okuda Hiroko, a reggae fan employed by Casio to make pre-set tunes for their new range of keyboards. She had no idea how famous her work would become.

Swedish-American Simone Giertz describes herself as "the queen of bad robots, mistress of malfunctions and the mother of terrible inventions". They include: an alarm clock that slaps you awake, a machine for applying lipstick, and a contraption for shampooing your hair.

When brothers Abdoulaye and Ibrahima Barry were growing up in the 1980s in Guinea, the Fulani language - which is spoken by millions of people across the world – didn't have its own alphabet, instead having to borrow letters from Arabic to be written down. With the support of their father, the brothers – aged just 10 and 14 – set about creating a formalised alphabet for Fulani.

Heine Allemagne is the inventor of the magic vanishing spray that the referees were using to mark out white lines on the pitch for free kicks in the World Cup. The story of how he came up with the idea is as intriguing as any football match.

In 1943, the cellist, Anita Lasker-Wallfisch was sent to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. She expected to be killed in the gas chambers but survived because she was recruited to play in an orchestra set up by the women prisoners.

Donor conceived

Emma, who is from Denmark, grew up with openness about her donor conception from the very start. When she was a baby, her parents wrote her a letter explaining how she came into the world, putting it inside a children’s book they made especially for her.

Would you take £50,000 or a 50/50 chance of £1m?

If you had a choice between instantly receiving £50,000 or a 50% chance to win £1m, which would you pick?

When YouGov asked exactly that question to people in the UK, 73% said they would take the £50,000, while 21% opted for the 50/50 chance of winning £1m.

As you may or may not have imagined, this finding provoked outrage on Twitter, with people saying the UK appeared incredibly risk averse. “This is what’s wrong with Britain,” wrote celebrity polling analyst and More or Less interviewee Nate Silver.

But is the result surprising, when you know a bit more about how people make decisions like this? BBC economics editor Faisal Islam explains why he thinks not.

Wildfires in Europe

Wildfires continue to burn across the continent. Thousands of people have been evacuated on the Greek island of Crete, as well as in western France, Spain, Portugal and Turkey.

A blaze in central Spain has burned almost 80,000 hectares over the last week and is now considered the largest recorded wildfire in Spanish history.

With temperatures hitting more than 40 degrees Celsius in south-western France, firefighters, planes and helicopters have been battling fires there.

Muriele in France and Julian in Spain share their experiences of escaping the flames. Robin – on holiday with his family – describes what it was like as the fire approached their French campsite.

“The pool was getting filled up with ash, you could see all black pine needles, bits of bark that were burnt, it blocked out the sun,” Robin tells us. “It was almost like you imagine from a film, the beginning of the end of the world.”

We also bring together volunteers in France, helping to provide food and shelter for people displaced from their homes.

The Democrats almost certainly need to win the Senate race in Michigan if they are to take control of Congress in November’s midterm elections but picking a candidate is exposing a stark choice for the party. Next week party members in the state will decide between a left wing candidate backed by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and a centrist candidate backed by establishment Democrats like Gretchen Whitmer.

It's opened up a debate about whether the success of other progressive candidates like Zohran Mamdani could be replicated across the country as the Democrats build a strategy to take on the Republicans at the midterms and beyond.

Just how important is the race in Michigan for the Democrats, and will the outcome have an outsized role in deciding how they approach the 2028 presidential election?

A common goal

The Commonwealth Games - known as the Friendly Games - are held every four years. They have a three word moto "Humanity - showing that sport brings people together. Equality - that sport is for everyone. And Destiny - that sport is just the beginning. It's the only sporting event that combines both able bodied and para athletes. And the Commonwealth Games are a chance for smaller nations to shine in the sporting spotlight

In 2014, Tonga had no national netball team, coach, squad, or training facilities. Determined to change that, former television news anchor Salote Sisifa became CEO of Tonga Netball and promised the board that within five years she would build a team capable of competing internationally and reaching the world’s top ten by 2025. If she failed, she would resign. Alongside, Head Coach Jaqua Pori-Makea-Simpson, Salote propelled Tonga from 42nd to 7th in the world rankings navigating national disaster, the Covid-19 pandemic, and restricted resources along the way. Sophia Hartley examines Tonga’s extraordinary journey and how they have become a formidable force on the international stage. Their next milestone is their Commonwealth Games debut in 2026.

In the pool Olympic Champion Freya Anderson is aiming add to her already impressive medal collection. But Freya doesn't just have the opposition to beat, she has a condition which causes chronic pain; especially tough given her gruelling training schedule. Three years ago she was diagnosed with Endometriosis. Now back to her competitive best, Freya is raising awareness of the condition through her charity " Fast and Female ".

Diminutive weight-lifter, Precious McKenzie was a prodigious talent. Apartheid prevented him from competing for his native South Africa. So Precious moved to the UK and worked in a shoe factory. While doing so, he finally achieved international success at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Jamaica.

L’Oiseau Rare is now one of Gabon’s most successful artists. His numerous hits include Kati-K and Niamatos, as well as collaborations with Didi B from Ivory Coast and Shatta Wale from Ghana.

As he tells TIA, L’Oiseau Rare originally wanted to be an architect, then a pilot, but fell into a life of crime and ended up spending time in prison for theft.

While he was behind bars, he discovered his musical talent. Thanks to the encouragement of the other inmates, he was determined to turn his life around and make a career in music once he had served his time.

He says his experience has made him very focused and hard working and he is now a devout Muslim. He takes pleasure in inspiring others to quit crime as he did, and he wants to become a big philanthropist.

A battle that changed Ireland

The 1st of July 1916 is still one of the deadliest days in the history of warfare. Nearly 20,000 men from the British Army and 6,000 German soldiers were killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. The World War One battle would last another four months and was one of the first examples of industrial warfare; three million men fought in it, over a-million soldiers were wounded, missing or killed.

Jordan Dunbar investigates how, 110 years on, the battle still affects people and communities, and discovers new insights about its impact on his own family and on the history of Ireland.

France's 'David and Goliath' fight against wildfires

Pascale Harter introduces stories from France, Ecuador, the Thailand-Myanmar border and South Korea.

Firefighters across Europe have been battling wildfires this week and in the southwest of France an area four times the size of Paris burnt outside Bordeaux. President Macron said it was the toughest situation the country had dealt with since the Second World War.Gwyn Loader joined the professional firefighters and volunteers battling to beat back the flames amid 40C heat.

Despite President Daniel Noboa's hardline policies, promising to crackdown on drug trafficking and gang violence in Ecuador, the country is still terrorised by cartels and corruption. In the cities of Guayaquil and Duran, Orla Guerin saw how rampant crime is fuelling a climate of fear.

Since the military coup in Myanmar, the border city of Mae Sot in Thailand has become a haven for refugees, exiled civilians politicians and rebel fighters trying to restore democracy in their homeland. But five and a half years on, some of their revolutionary spirit is flagging as the Burmese regime retakes territory across the border. On a recent visit to the city, Jonathan Head sensed a mood of exhaustion in Myanmar's fractured opposition.

South Korea is worried about its future, as birthrates remain low. The government in Seoul has spent billions to get more of the younger generation coupled up, married off and having families of their own. But it can be hard for people not used to socialising in person to break the ice. Jake Kwon travelled to an ancient mountainside temple where Buddhist monks have been hosting special speed-dating weekends to help.

Have you ever asked yourself: should I do Keto? Is white rice good for me? Am I eating too many carbohydrates? If so, then this episode of The Food Chain is for you. Carbohydrate-rich foods are everywhere and they’re delicious. But are they good for us? Carbs have a reputation for spiking our blood sugar and making us fat. But is that reputation deserved?

Ruth Alexander talks to Javier Gonzalez, Professor of Nutrition and Metabolism at the University of Bath in England and US-based dietitian Julie Stefanski from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to find out whether we’ve been approaching carbohydrates all wrong.

Plus: are there some populations who need to think more carefully about carbs than others? Dr Nelum Dharmapriya thinks so. She’s an Australian family doctor with a special interest in metabolic health in South Asian populations. She advises her patients to make some tweaks to the traditional South Asian carbohydrate-rich diet and says it can be done without losing heritage and identity.

A Chinese dissident's journey

When Chinese policeman Dong Guangping wrote an article commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 1989 military crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing, it kicked off a chain of events that led to him serving jail time and losing his job. But it also sparked the beginning of a deep desire to live more freely. So Dong began planning how he might escape China. Just a few weeks ago, back in late May, he finally achieved his dream, having taken the huge risk of crossing China's Yellow Sea in a dinghy to reach South Korean waters. Phoebe Kong, based in the BBC's Hong Kong bureau, explained how rare Dong's achievement really is.

Yemen has faced decades of economic hardship and war, but the khat industry is thriving. Khat is a plant, and when chewed it acts as a stimulant. It is estimated to consume one-third of Yemen's groundwater and occupy much of the country's agricultural land. Dalia Haidar of BBC Arabic has been looking into Yemen's relationship to khat and the problem it can cause.

The Kenyans taking on multinational chemical companies

In Kenya, a young lawyer is bringing a legal case against the Kenyan government, regulator, and several multinational agrochemical companies.

He’s working alongside activists and health practitioners, and they claim that hazardous pesticides and herbicides, designed to make farming for efficient, are damaging the health of farmers in Kenya.

They are demanding changes to regulation, as well as increased education and compensation for people who they claim, have had their health severely affected by high exposure to these products.

For Assignment, Josephine Casserly travels to Kenya to follow lawyers, health practitioners and scientists as they face the challenges of gathering evidence to support their case.

Unstoppable: Tebello Nyokong

Born under Apartheid in South Africa, Prof Tebello Nyokong and her family uprooted their lives to escape the unequal education system enforced upon Black South Africans. After herding sheep proved she could do anything a boy could do, Tebello ended up studying science and found a love for chemistry. In the face of limited opportunities, she once again uprooted her life and took her studies oversees, but this was when she was introduced to something huge: a new, ground-breaking cancer treatment. Now Tebello is using nanotechnology to get this therapy off the ground, all while she fights to make Africa a science superpower.

Will I get hit by a meteor?

Stare up at the night sky, and if you’re lucky, you might see a shooting star. Some people might make a wish, but CrowdScience listener Scott in California in the USA, thinks differently. He’s wondering how dangerous they might be.

Shooting stars are actually meteors, ending their incredible journey whizzing through the depths of space by burning through our atmosphere, and crashing down to earth. And Scott’s not wrong to worry about them! In May 2026, an enormous meteor exploded off the coast of Massachusetts, causing a loud sonic boom before crashing into the ocean, releasing the equivalent energy of 300 tons of TNT!

So, how many meteors make it to our atmosphere in the first place? How many of them survive long enough to make it to the surface? How many come down in places where people live, and how much should we be worried about it happening to us?

“The time has come for the international community to be honest, not to be hypocritical, not be selective, not engage in erasure, but to admit that the gravest crime against humanity took place and it took place on this continent. And that the time to repair what was broken, what undermines our collective humanity, what is a scar on our collective conscience, the time and the only way to repair that is now.”

Aleem Maqbool speaks to Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, about his country leading a global campaign for reparations for the transatlantic slave trade.

Earlier this year, the United Nations adopted an historic resolution that declared the transatlantic slave trade "the gravest crime against humanity", although every European nation chose to abstain in the vote. Meanwhile, the US was one of three countries to vote against.

Between the 16th and 19th centuries, it’s estimated that around 12 million people were forcibly trafficked from Africa to European colonies in the Americas, although some historians place this figure even higher.

Accra’s campaign has been supported by countries all over the world, and although not so much by European nations, it has been recognised by some European institutions, like the Church of England.

I didn't know the glowing blue powder was radioactive

In September 1987, bus driver Odesson Ferreira finished work and went to visit his brother at home in the Brazilian city of Goiânia. His brother, a scrapyard owner, had recently purchased part of an abandoned medical device that had become the talk of the neighbourhood. Friends, relatives and neighbours were fascinated by the strange and beautiful blue glow it emitted – unaware it contained a highly radioactive substance called Caesium-137. By the time the powder's radioactivity was discovered, hundreds of people had been contaminated, including dozens of Odesson's relatives. Odesson battled radiation sickness, grieved members of his family who died and saw survivors face stigma and discrimination. He became determined to understand how the event could have happened and spent decades campaigning for the recognition of those affected. Today, nearly 40 years after incident, Odesson has found peace living in the countryside and has begun writing his own account of the worst radiological accident in Brazil's history.

Lifelong sports fan and journalist Neil Squires spent decades interviewing elite athletes, having given up on the cherished childhood hope of competing alongside them. Then, in January 2024, after five years as Chief Sports Writer at a national newspaper, he was made redundant. He found himself at a crossroads, wondering what came next. Everything changed when his son Louis sent him a short video of a little-known Finnish game called Mölkky, along with a simple message: “I think you might like this.” Intrigued, Squires threw himself into learning the game and roped some friends into a team. He quickly became obsessed. When he learned the World Mölkky Championship was being held in Japan, he decided this was their chance. Arriving in Japan, as Great Britain’s only team in the Nations Cup, they found themselves representing their country on the world stage. They attracted attention from Japanese media, competed against experienced international opponents and exceeded all expectations by reaching the quarter-finals and finishing seventh in the world. The team continues to compete and Squires' book about their adventures, The Fall and Rise of the Mölkky Bar Kids, was published earlier this year.

Getting Gaza back online

How amid the tents and the rubble Gaza is developing once again as an unlikely tech hub.

Even before the October 7th 2023 attack and the subsequent war between Israel and Hamas, NGOs, with the backing of Google, had sought to develop tech start-ups in the Gaza strip. The digital economy was one of the few areas in which young Gazans in particular could seek to earn money for their families.

During the two years of war they struggled for food and water. Forced to move from place to place, most of them lost their homes, their work, sometimes their laptops and plenty lost family members. Now 80% of Gazans are unemployed and have no income. Many of them live amid the rubble in tents. Stable electricity and internet are difficult to come by. And yet co-working hubs have begun to pop up, giving well educated graduates a chance to work remotely for foreign companies as coders, software engineers and app developers. With Israel controlling what comes in and out of Gaza, they still face significant obstacles, not least finding decent internet, electricity and spare parts for their laptops. And with near-daily bombings continuing, Gaza’s wider recovery remains uncertain. Yolande Knell reports on how its tech workers give a glimpse of a brighter, possible future, open to the world beyond Gaza’s borders.

Nine Yards, the designers behind the Paris 2024 Olympic skatepark, get to work on their next big challenge: the rebuild of Olympiaplein, one of Amsterdam's oldest and most cherished skating spots.

Sean Allsop joins designers Jesper Kuipers and Jeroen Van Eggermond in the Netherlands, as they work through sketches and plans before presenting their vision to local skaters for crucial feedback. Then the team head out onto the building site, with concrete trucks, tight deadlines, and one shot to get the surface smooth for skaters of all levels, before the gates open and a community gets to skate again.

We explore how skating has evolved from an underground sport into an established movement, the community within skateparks, and the intricate detail that goes into every park.

We live in an age of global mass tourism. Last year, the UN estimated 1.5 billion people travelled to another country. While many places depend on tourism for income and employment, it can come at a significant environmental and social cost.

We take a tour of Dubrovnik in Croatia, which has the highest tourists-to-locals ratio in Europe. The city is using perks and penalties to keep both local people and visitors happy. Also we paddle and cycle around Copenhagen in Denmark. They are rewarding eco-friendly actions to encourage better tourist behaviour.

In 1988, as floods struck Bangladesh and a heat wave swept across the United States, climate change became a political issue. Governments and businesses alike talked about how to stop it, or at least slow it down.

That year the think tank World Resources Institute and the energy company Applied Energy Services announced a novel idea that has been credited as the first example of a ‘carbon offset’: In order to make up for the millions of tons of planet-warming carbon dioxide that would be released by a new coal-fired power plant in the United States, the energy company would pay to plant 52 million trees in Guatemala. But the reality on the ground was more complicated.

In the late 90s, in daring feats of DIY networking on rooftops across Romania’s capital, Bucharest, teenagers are stringing computer cables between tower blocks to share an internet connection. This guerilla infrastructure starts out scrappy, but it sprawls into an impressive, improvised network that catches the attention of telecoms giants. Told by those who built it: Master cabler Roxana Ardelean, DIY network designer Eric Băleanu, and rooftop cable runner Laurențiu Simion.

This is the extraordinary story of how a homemade system became the backbone of a city - a reflection of what the internet was meant to be… and what it became.

In 1987, Taiwan finally lifted martial law after nearly four decades of authoritarian rule.

The moment marked a profound shift for a society long shaped by censorship, surveillance and political fear.

For many who had lived through the ‘White Terror’, it opened the possibility of speaking openly for the first time.

Among them was Malaysian student Fred Chin, who had arrived in Taiwan in the late 1960s with little sense of the political tensions around him.

What followed would draw him into a world of secret policing and military justice that operated far from public view, leaving lasting effects on his life and identity.

A Singer’s Search for Peace

In Lithuania, singer Rūgilė Daujotaitė was becoming a familiar face on television. She was performing at major music events, competing for a place at Eurovision, and building a life that, from the outside, appeared successful.

But privately, she says she was struggling.

Raised in a family shaped by New Age spirituality and occult beliefs, Rūgilė grew up searching for God through a mixture of traditions. As an adult, she moved to Amsterdam to study jazz, became involved in shamanic practices and Santo Daime ceremonies, and began taking ayahuasca - a powerful psychedelic brew used in some religious rituals.

She says she came to believe that these experiences offered enlightenment and spiritual healing. Yet, as her public career grew, she felt increasingly distressed and spiritually lost.

For Heart and Soul, Colm Flynn travels to Vilnius to meet Rūgilė in the home where she first encountered many of the ideas that shaped her early life. She reflects on leading retreats, introducing others to practices she has since rejected, and the moment she began reading the Bible and questioning the world she had embraced.

The origins of the all-inclusive holiday

Holidaymakers arrived at the first Club Med resort on the Spanish island of Majorca in the summer of 1950.

Founded by the Belgian water polo player Gérard Blitz, Club Méditerranée offered a new kind of post-war holiday built around the idea that leisure should be simple, sociable and accessible.

The facilities were basic at first. Guests slept in huts and shared communal meals. But the company's all-inclusive approach proved enormously popular and helped change the way millions of people holiday around the world.

In 2020, Lucy Burns spoke to Pierre-Xavier Bécret whose parents worked at that first resort and remained part of the Club Med story for many years.

Why is TB still killing people?

Tuberculosis kills more than a million people every year. It’s the world’s leading cause of death from a single infectious agent. This is despite the fact that we've had a cure for TB since the 1940s and a vaccine that’s over 100 years old. So why is TB still causing so many people to die?

That’s what CrowdScience listener John in Tanzania wants to know, and presenter Caroline Steel is on the case. After uncovering the history of TB, she looks into the efficacy of the vaccine, known as BCG. It’s both effective and ineffective, protecting children well against severe TB, but offering inconsistent and often poor protection in adults.

Then we discovered antibiotics. Surely this should have meant an end to TB - but it’s still with us. So what’s going wrong?

Caroline looks into the science of TB – what it is, and how we can fight it. In an unequal world, is the solution purely scientific?
