The BBC has announced that it has a sustainable plan for the future of the BBC Singers, in association with The VOCES8 Foundation.

10.30am Building a Library: Ben Gernon on Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor

This concerto is full of glorious melodies and deserves a place in everyone's collection. Prokofiev was on a concert tour when he wrote the piece and later wrote, "the number of places in which I wrote the Concerto shows the kind of nomadic concert tour life I led then. The main theme of the 1st movement was written in Paris, the first theme of the 2nd movement at Voronezh, the orchestration was finished in Baku and the premiere was given in Madrid." The concerto is more conventional than Prokofiev's early experimental works and its romantic heart has made it a perennial favourite.

SAT 11:45 Music Matters (m001gy49)

Ahead of his concert with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Tom Service travels to Poole to talk to the German virtuoso horn player Felix Klieser. Born without arms, Felix is celebrated for his wide range of expression and colours and has developed a unique technique to play the valves of his instrument with his left foot – something he explains can help expand the instrument's palette for both him and others. He tells Tom about the collaborative dialogue in which composers and performers engage, and how the relationship affects the way he performs material written especially for him.

Discrimination and harassment have increased significantly in the music industry, according to the latest report published by the Independent Society of Musicians. Tom hears from the ISM’s Chief Executive, Deborah Annetts, about these findings and hears testimonies from musicians who've been subject to harassment during their careers.

Music Matters joins the designer and video artist Netia Jones, and composer Brian Irvine, to hear about the UK performance of 'Least Like The Other: Searching for Rosemary Kennedy' which is staged this month in the Royal Opera House's Lindbury Theatre. Commissioned by Irish National Opera, the work received its premiere in 2019 and both Netia and Brian explain how the story behind John Fitzgerald Kennedy's sister, who was lobotomised in 1941 when she was a young woman, is a mirror to the way in which society treated women both at the time and still.

And, Tom speaks to the conductor and author Alice Farnham about as her new book, 'In Good Hands: the Making of a Modern Conductor'. They discuss what it means to be a conductor in modern times and Alice’s efforts to make the profession more open, gender-equal and diverse.

SAT 13:00 Inside Music (m001gy8c)
Composer, performer and author Kerry Andrew with repetitive rhythms and refreshing rhymes

Composer, performer and author Kerry Andrew explores music which blurs the lines between genres, from a new piece built on a traditional song to a track that blends elements of classical music with the sounds of rock and electronic dance music.

As a successful writer and musician, Kerry enjoys delving deep into the relationship between music and text - admiring the genius placement of rhymes in a song by Rogers and Hart, and revealing a piano piece by Debussy that inspired a short story.

Kerry also discovers a scherzo infused with cheekiness, a quartet born out of extreme hardship, and a surprising arrangement for brass band…

A series in which each week a musician explores a selection of music - from the inside.

SAT 18:30 Opera on 3 (m001gy8m)
Giordano's Fedora

St Petersburg, winter, 1881. When Princess Fedora Romazov's fiancé is shot and mortally wounded on the eve of their wedding, she points the finger at Count Loris Ipanoff. By the end of Act 2, placated by Ipanoff's revelation that his wife and Fedora's fiancé were having an affair and that Ipanoff killed him in self-defence, Fedora has fallen in love with him. But the path of true love does not run smooth: Fedora has dobbed in Ipanoff to his political enemies who go after his family and Iapnoff vows vengeance on the woman who set the wheels in motion. Despairing, Fedora admits that she is the culprit, drinks poison and dies in Ipanoff's arms.

A superb vehicle for a prima donna and a charismatic tenor - Caruso created the role of Ipanoff at Fedora's 1898 Milan premiere - Fedora gets both of those in spades in this Met production with Sonya Yoncheva in the title role and Piotr Beczała as Ipanoff.

Presented by Debra Lew Harder with commentator Ira Siff.

SUNDAY 15 JANUARY 2023

SUN 00:00 Freeness (m001gyhj)
Asymmetrical Waves

Corey Mwamba offers new angles on free jazz and improvised music, from the energetic blowouts of a live session by Oslo’s 15-piece Large Unit to a reflective musical conversation between cellist Tomeka Reid and saxophone heavyweight Joe McPhee to mark Juneteenth, the national American holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

Oscillating between composition and free improvisation, Furthered is the forthcoming album from Alex Ward Item 4, a quartet featuring Charlotte Keeffe on trumpet and flugelhorn, Otto Willberg on double bass, and Andrew Lisle on drums. With this work, the London-based clarinettist and guitarist Ward aims at encouraging a musical dialogue that challenges the very structures around which the music is designed. And French experimentalist Quentin Rollet is joined by Romain Perrot for his new album Le Vieux Fusible, where sci-fi-inspired, improvised synthwave creates a futuristic soundscape to underscore tales of reckless space adventure.

Diana Melly

The author Diana Melly tells Michael Berkeley about her life lived on a rollercoaster: she has experienced passion, great friendships and celebrity but also depression, illness, heartbreak and the deaths of two of her children.

Running through her life for 46 years was her enduring - but extremely complicated - marriage to the jazz musician and bon viveur George Melly, who died in 2007.

She has written two novels, a searingly honest memoir, and has co-edited the letters of her friend Jean Rhys as well as campaigning for charities concerned with dementia and drug abuse.

Diana Melly talks movingly about the deaths of her children and the happiness she and George found at the end of his life. And she describes her passion for trying new things late in life including ballroom dancing, philosophy and riding a tandem.

But her greatest new passion, developed in her eighties, is for opera and she chooses her favourite arias by Puccini, Massenet, Mozart, Gluck and Verdi.

And she reveals why, having been married to a jazzman for 46 years, there is no jazz on her music list.

SUN 17:30 Words and Music (m001h6hc)
Warmth

Warmth - with the cold weather with us we are all too aware of the need for warm. For some it simply requires the flick of a switch, a thicker sweater,or the kind words of a friend or neighbour. However, as writers throughout the ages and across the world recall, for others, it is not so immeadiate or straight forward. In this selection of music and readings, actors Amanda Hale and Oliver Alvin-Wilson chart a course through our varied and various perceptions of warmth. The desire for comfort and cosiness. The warmth of affection, of friendship and of love. The attraction of warmer climes or the “warmth of other suns”. The anxiety of global warming. George Orwell is ‘down and out’ in a London winter; Alexander Pushkin counters a frozen Russian landscape with the passion of young love; Johann von Goethe bids us find warmth in the land where "citron-apples bloom"; Paul Kerschen ponders the thoughts of John Keats, recuperating in the Italian sunshine; Haruki Murakami rediscovers the warmth of a certain phrase of music; while Zadie Smith, looking up at the sky, suggests “everyone knows it shouldn’t be this hot!”. Other featured authors include John Donne, Charles Dickens, Johann Von Goethe, Isabel Wilkerson, DH Lawrence, Emile Zola, Emily Dickinson, Richard Wright and Bai Juyi. Complementary strains of music are given to us by - among others - David Lang, Robert Schumann, Giacomo Puccini, Piotr Tchaikovsky, Georges Bizet, Johnny Dankworth, Tori Amos, Georgy Sviridov, William Grant Still and with the comforting familiarity of ‘Trad’.

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (m001h4kh)
Scott Ross – Harpsichord Rebel

In 1984, an American harpsichord player called Scott Ross quit a teaching job in Canada and returned to France, the country that since he was a teenager had been his adopted home. It was the year that Frankie Goes to Hollywood had a Europe-wide hit with Two Tribes and Steve Jobs launched the Macintosh personal computer. But Ross had an idea with more of a baroque feel. In Paris, he met a producer at Radio France, Nicolas Bomsel, and suggested a project that most musicians would consider absurd: recording all 555 keyboard sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti.

By 1989, Ross was dead, aged just 38. Did he know he was ill when he pitched the project? Was it a test of human endurance against the odds? Did he succeed? And who was Scott Ross, a man who has been called ‘early music’s bad boy’ and ‘the John McEnroe of the harpsichord’? Also, how is it that a musician who’s widely considered to be the best harpsichord player of his generation remains little known in the UK?

These are questions posed by music journalist Phil Hebblethwaite in this Sunday Feature. To find answers, Hebblethwaite travels to France (Montpellier, Assas and Paris), speaking to those who knew and loved Ross, and tracks down two former students of Ross’s from his decade in Canada. A portrait of a complex, contradictory musician emerges – a man with a tragic early life who, Hebblethwaite finds, seems to slip further away the better he gets to know him.

With contributions from Nicolas Bomsel, Michel Proulx, Marie-Claire Demangel, Henri Prunières, Jocelyne Chaptal, Catherine Perrin, Mario Raskin, and Didier Lestrade.

SUN 19:30 Drama on 3 (m000tmhr)
Constellations and Elegy

Over the last decade Nick Payne's plays have delighted audiences across the world. In this Drama on 3, we bring two of his most acclaimed and moving plays together for the first time. Constellations and Elegy both explore science, time and love.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw and George MacKay star in Constellations, a play about a relationship that plays out in multiple different ways in parallel universes. Marianne and Roland meet at a party. They hit it off, and go for a drink. Or do they? Perhaps they come together and their love story unfolds, or perhaps it's tragically cut short? The play explores how even the smallest change can significantly alter the course we take. It is a spellbinding exploration of the infinite possibility for heartbreak or for hope.

Marianne . . . . . Gugu Mbatha-Raw
Roland . . . . . George MacKay

The play was first performed in 2012 at the Royal Court and went on to win the Evening Standard Best Play Award as well as receiving a nomination for an Olivier Award for Best New Play. It has since been performed across the world.

Elegy stars Juliet Stevenson, Deborah Findlay and Marilyn Nnadebe. It's about a couple who have made a choice between love and survival. Lorna and Carrie met in later life and married. But now they are facing the possibility of their relationship disintegrating in the most painful way. Lorna's brain has been afflicted by an degenerative disease that will soon destroy her. Her partner Carrie is faced with a devastating decision: to submit her beloved wife to an experimental new treatment that risks completely erasing Lorna's memory of the relationship.

Lorna . . . . . Juliet Stevenson
Carrie . . . . . Deborah Findlay
Miriam . . . . . Marilyn Nnadebe

Elegy opened at the Donmar Warehouse in 2016 and was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Play.

Directed by Sasha Yevtushenko.

SUN 23:00 The Art of Music with Anna Clyne (m001gy48)
Colour

Grammy-nominated composer Anna Clyne is fascinated by the relationship that exists between art and music. In this series she explores the stories, imagery, and colour of some of her favourite music and art, and how one inspires the other.

In this second episode, we delve into the deep hues of colour that exist in music. Anna describes how bright yellows, oranges and reds in the work of American artist Mark Rothko inspired her own orchestral work Color Field. She considers our unique experiences of colour and music and explores how synaesthesia contributed to the music of Miles Davis, Alexander Scriabin and Duke Ellington. We hear why the viola evokes the colour purple for Grammy-winning composer Joan Tower and what made Estonian composer Arvo Part describe listeners of his music as ‘prisms’, dividing white light into the full colour spectrum.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (m001gy3k)
Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-1975)

Unplayable

Dmitry Shostakovich, like his home country of Russia, was a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. From the very beginning of his career, he pushed the boundaries, but under Stalin’s stifling regime, experimental artists were enemies of the state, and Shostakovich was at the top of the wanted list. The composer was forced to censor his work and betray his own morals to survive - or was he?

Some say Shostakovich was Stalin’s faithful lackey; others read dissident messages in his music. This week, Donald Macleod traces five turning points in the composer's career, from his explosive debut to his dramatic exile, as he attempts to decode the mystery that surrounds Shostakovich.

In today’s programme, we hear the story of Shostakovich’s First Symphony. Admitted to the Conservatoire while still just a child and battling ill health, his debut made a splash for all the right reasons – and the wrong ones too…

From Biltong to Bobotie - Journeys in South African Cuisine

Black South African Cuisine

Writer and broadcaster Lindsay Johns explores the food of South Africa.

South African cuisine is as varied as South Africa itself, and in this set of Essays, Lindsay will delve into the foods of the Rainbow Nation for five personal and lyrical ruminations on what these foods evoke for him. Each Essay - covering one of South Africa's racial groups - offers distinct memories of different aspects of his many experiences in South Africa. We'll sample the different cuisines, and experience these nuanced and complex communities through Lindsay's eyes, ears, and taste buds.

For his first Essay, Lindsay invites listeners to join him as he samples the cuisine of South Africa’s Xhosa and Zulu township communities – smiley (a boiled sheep’s head in a drum), amangina (chicken, cow, pig, lamb and sheep’s feet served with hot sauce), and pap – a cornmeal porridge so popular it appears on the menu at South African branches of KFC. Lindsay says it does what it ought to do - "placate the belly and nourish the soul."

TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week (m001gymp)
Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-1975)

Game

In today’s programme, we hear about the fateful night that Stalin paid a visit to the opera, and Shostakovich’s career as a composer was changed forever…

Bath Mozartfest 2022: Mozart and Schubert's 'Trout'

Highlights from 2022 Bath Mozartfest continue with works by Mozart and Schubert. Recorded in the grand setting of Bath's Assembly Rooms, the brilliant Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski revels in the delicacy and invention of Mozart's "Variations come un agnello". Next the Nash Ensemble perform one of Schubert's most popular works for piano and strings, the Trout quintet. Written in 1819 during a particularly happy period in the young composer's life, the nickname comes from his song "Die Forelle" or The Trout. Schubert repurposed this charming melody to form the basis for a set of variations in the fourth movement.

Rachmaninov and Lyatoshynsky

The BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kirill Karabits, performs Lyatoshynsky's Symphony No.3 and, with soloist Anna Fedorova, Rachmaninov's wistful Piano Concerto No.3.

“Delicacy and passion in every phrase” was how one critic described the playing of the young Ukrainian pianist Anna Fedorova. She’ll bring all her powers into play when she joins Kirill Karabits and the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the mightiest of all Romantic piano concertos – an imposing upbeat to Boris Lyatoshynsky’s tempestuous Third Symphony of 1951.

It’s still something of a rarity in the UK, but Kirill Karabits has been an outspoken champion of neglected Soviet-era composers, and he’s convinced that the music of this major Ukrainian symphonist is powerful enough to speak on its own terms. “If only Lyatoshynsky had lived in Moscow during Soviet times, instead of staying in Kyiv, his name would stand next to Shostakovich” he says “It's just great music. Really great music”.

The Wife of Bath

Chaucer's widow and clothmaker is one of three characters given a longer confessional voice than other pilgrims in his Canterbury Tales and she uses her narrative to ask who has had the advantage in setting out the stories of women - "Who peyntede the leon, tel me who?" Shahidha Bari explores both the roots and the influence of Chaucer's creation and the different modern versions created by writers including Zadie Smith and Caroline Bergvall. Her guests are Marion Turner, author of The Wife of Bath: A Biography, Patience Agbabi who reimagines this timeless character as a Nigerian businesswoman in her poem The Wife of Bafa, and New Generation Thinker Hetta Howes.

You can hear Marion Turner discussing Chaucer's own life in a past episode of Free Thinking hearing from nominees for the 2020 Wolfson History Prize https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000j2qw

From Biltong to Bobotie - Journeys in South African Cuisine

White South African Food

Writer and broadcaster Lindsay Johns explores the food of South Africa.

South African cuisine is as varied as South Africa itself, and in this set of Essays, Lindsay will delve into the foods of the Rainbow Nation for five personal and lyrical ruminations on what these foods evoke for him. Each Essay - covering one of South Africa's racial groups - offers distinct memories of different aspects of his many experiences in South Africa. We'll sample the different cuisines, and experience these nuanced and complex communities through Lindsay's eyes, ears, and taste buds.

For this second Essay, we find Lindsay walking up Table Mountain in Cape Town, and munching on biltong, what he calls "the most regal and masculine of all amuse-bouches". We'll hear, too, about the importance of the braai, and about the central place of meat in white South African cuisine. But as Lindsay chews this all over, he mulls an important question: for many years this cuisine was seen as the ‘Oppressors’ food’ – so should he still be reluctant to eat it?

WED 22:00 Free Thinking (m001gyxw)
Higher education for women and working-class students

Over the last two hundred years, working class and women students, have found a place insides universities. Anne McElvoy hears about some of the stories behind the social expansion of higher education. Joanna Bourke's new book is a history of Birkbeck, the University of London college that began life as the London Mechanics’ Institution in 1823 and is now a leading centre of research in many areas. Iona Burnell Reilly has been looking at the lives of working-class academics, and Ann Kennedy Smith has considered women's pursuit of education at the University of Cambridge. And Clare Bucknell discusses the history of one educational resource, the anthology.

Joanna Bourke is Professor of History at Birkbeck, University of London, and a Fellow of the British Academy. She is the author of Birkbeck 200 years of radical learning for working people.

Dr Clare Bucknell is a fellow of All Souls College, University of Oxford and author of a social history of poetry anthologies, The Treasuries: Poetry Anthologies and the Making of British Culture.

Dr Iona Burnell Reilly is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Education and Communities at the University of East London and she is the author of The Lives of Working Class Academics: Getting Ideas Above your Station

Dr Ann Kennedy Smith is a contributor to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, and she has been researching women at Cambridge between 1890 and 1914.

WED 22:45 The Essay (m001gyyj)
From Biltong to Bobotie - Journeys in South African Cuisine

Coloured South African Food

Writer and broadcaster Lindsay Johns explores the food of South Africa.

South African cuisine is as varied as South Africa itself, and in this set of Essays, Lindsay will delve into the foods of the Rainbow Nation for five personal and lyrical ruminations on what these foods evoke for him. Each Essay - covering one of South Africa's racial groups - offers distinct memories of different aspects of his many experiences in South Africa. We'll sample the different cuisines, and experience these nuanced and complex communities through Lindsay's eyes, ears, and taste buds.

For his third Essay, Lindsay will describe the cuisine he knows, and loves, the best: Cape Coloured cuisine. We'll learn about snoek (barracuda), pickled fish, mince and cabbage stew and the Gatsby steak sandwich. It is, he says, the quintessential poor man’s fusion cuisine - and the most under-rated and overlooked food in the whole country.

A Soul in Love: Carolyn Sampson sings Handel, live at Wigmore Hall

The Finnish Baroque Orchestra perform instrumental music by Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti and are joined by one of the UK's leading sopranos, Carolyn Sampson, for three of Handel's ravishing Italian cantatas.

Handel's four-year Italian period began in his late teens but the ever-canny composer soon built up an extensive web of connections, gaining employment and commissions from wealthy aristocratic patrons. The prolific output of those years includes dozens of cantatas which Handel produced for his patrons' personal enjoyment at lavish soirées where dressing up as in Classical garb was de rigueur. Usually scored for small instrumental ensemble and solo soprano (women were prohibited from singing in public at the time), the cantatas are mini-dramas, often setting erotic classical texts, including beautiful arias many of which are now familiar to us in recycled versions made by Handel for his later and more famous operas.

Introduced live from Wigmore Hall by Ian Skelly.

Born at a time when Indian restaurateurs were prevented by law from serving food to black workers - the dish was served surreptitiously so that passing police forces would see only a loaf of bread - today it is a national staple.

FRI 19:30 Radio 3 in Concert (m001gz0c)
Mahler's Symphony No 5

The BBC Symphony Orchestra, with composer conductor Ryan Wigglesworth, in Mahler's famed Fifth Symphony. Plus music by Ryan Wigglesworth himself, inspired by poet George Herbert.

Mahler’s Fifth Symphony begins with a funeral march – but that’s only the start of this particular story, with its tragedies, triumphs and distant horn-calls - plus, of course, the famous Adagietto, possibly the sweetest love-letter ever written in sound. Ryan Wigglesworth brings a composer’s insight to Mahler’s huge vision – and conducts his own song-cycle Till Dawning.

“Can there be any day but this / Though many suns to shine endeavour?” Like Mahler’s symphony, Till Dawning tells a story of suffering, struggle and triumphant reawakening, and this new orchestral version only heightens its emotional intensity. Elizabeth Watts is the soprano soloist.

Presented by Hannah French
Live at the Barbican, London

FRI 22:45 The Essay (m001gz1f)
Cape Malay South African Cuisine

Writer and broadcaster Lindsay Johns completes his exploration of South African food, as he discusses the national dish, and what it says about the Rainbow Nation.

South African cuisine is as varied as South Africa itself, and in this set of Essays, Lindsay has delved into its different cuisines for five personal and lyrical ruminations on what these foods evoke for him. Each Essay - covering one of South Africa's racial groups - offers distinct memories of different aspects of his many experiences in South Africa. We'll sample the different cuisines, and experience these nuanced and complex communities through Lindsay's eyes, ears, and taste buds.

In today's final Essay, Lindsay strolls through the picture postcard community of Bo-Kaap in Cape Town, on his way to eat a personal favourite - tomato bredie. His lunch companion, meanwhile, orders bobotie - a meal which originated in the country's Cape Malay community but has now become the national dish. And as he reflects on the series, Lindsay wonders what this development says about finding a balance between acknowledging South Africa's troubling past and making a future together.

FRI 23:00 Late Junction (m001gz1z)
Yann Gourdon and Uwalmassa in session

Jennifer Lucy Allan shares the fruits of our latest remote improvised collaboration session, between French hurdy-gurdy player and sound artist Yann Gourdon and trance-inducing Indonesian collective Uwalmassa.

One third of the drone trio France and part of the La Nòvia collective, Yann Gourdon learned to play the traditional music of the Auvergne on the hurdy-gurdy - a string instrument that uses a hand-cranked rosined wheel to produce sustained tones - by studying archive field recordings. Influenced by the relationship with his land and its history, Gourdon also focuses on acoustic phenomena and dynamic connections with the environment.

The French artist will combine forces with Uwalmassa, a sonic exploration project initiated by DIVISI62, the sound and visual arts label based in Jakarta that examines questions of Indonesian identity within a global context. In their work, Uwalmassa explore polyrhythmic compositions and experiment by taking apart and reassembling the structures of traditional Javanese gamelan music.

Elsewhere in the show, out-rock of guitar and drums from a new release by Manchester duo Yerba Mansa, a spiritual jazz gem from New York saxophonist, drummer, and composer Devin Brahja Waldman's freeform jazz group BRAHJA, and sketched sound collages by American artist Vanessa Rosetto. Plus Japanese musician Kaminumada Yohji improvises around a Comus track and London poet and rapper Nadeem Din Gabisi performs a song from last year's standout album POOL.
