The intermezzo - music originally designed to be heard between other works - is the genre explored by Rob Cowan this morning, with examples from composers as diverse as Brahms, Kodaly and Frank Bridge. The sequence of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance Marches includes No. 6 today, completed and orchestrated by Anthony Payne from sketches left by the composer. In the current short season of harpsichord concertos, today's is by Walter Leigh.

In a busy summer of sport that includes the World Cup, the Commonwealth Games and Wimbledon, comes the first ever BBC Sport Prom. Gabby Logan hosts a concert combining classical favourites recalling great sporting events with memorable TV themes. Sporting celebrities select their favourite classical items and we relive unforgettable sporting moments.
Music includes Orff's O Fortuna from Carmina Burana, Prokofiev's Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet, and Josef Strauss's Sport Polka, alongside favourite TV themes, including Match of the Day and Wimbledon.
Having inspired 18th century composers such as Mozart to write seminal works in his concerto and quintet, the clarinet was still a relatively new instrument during the 19th century. Technological advances in instrument making rapidly brought it into the mainstream and later composers such as Mendelssohn were inspired by the virtuoso playing of performers such as his good friend Heinrich Baermann. Trio di Clarone have been exploring this music for many years and bring the fruits of their journey to Wigmore Hall in works by Mendelssohn, Bruch and Schumann.

The largest classical music festival in the world, the BBC Proms also boasts one of the mightiest venues. The Royal Albert Hall is a monument to the same Victorian pomp and splendour that swells through Edward Elgar's music. What better way to open this season than with the composer's biblical oratorio The Kingdom - the beautiful 'slow movement' of a musical triptych that started with The Apostles, but that would remain unfinished at Elgar's death.
Celebrated Elgarian and Proms favourite Sir Andrew Davis, a Conductor Laureate of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, returns in his 70th-birthday year, joined by a distinguished cast of soloists.
Pippa Nixon and Jonathan Cullen read poems and prose about kisses, from Shakespeare's famous scene in Romeo and Juliet to Fleur Adcock's poem on 'Kissing', and from Herrick's romantic kisses to Sylvia Plath's warning, 'Never try to trick me with a kiss'. There are many types of kisses: the innocent first kisses of a baby, kisses of affection, the first romantic kiss, ritual kisses and the kisses of betrayal.
Music includes Stravinsky's 'The Fairy's Kiss' and Irving Berlin's 'Kiss me Honey'.
Sean Borodale's long poem, Mighty Beast, was created using interviews, a range of voices and overheard conversations he gathered from many visits to cattle markets in towns across Somerset, where he lives. This radio documentary version is told in the voice of the auctioneer: a brilliant, shifting stream of patter that is by turns harsh, lyrical, cajoling, admonitory and consoling. Through this tour de force of poetic writing come the real voices of some of the people who inspired the poem, men whose memories are of the gradual gaining of skills and experience, of childhoods spent in a landscape that has changed beyong retrieval, and the deep love for the animals who provide their livelihood. These voices, real and imagined, are given a rich and lyrical soundscape created by composer Elizabeth Purnell.
In its only UK concert this year, classical supergroup the World Orchestra for Peace returns to the Proms with its conductor Valery Gergiev.

This celebrated orchestra marks Strauss's 150th anniversary with the colourful, fairy-tale soundscapes of his operatic masterpiece Die Frau ohne Schatten. Fantasy gives way to reality in the prescient tragedy of Mahler's Sixth Symphony, the glorious agony of its final movement foreshadowing the composer's own personal heartbreaks.
Roxanna Panufnik's Three Paths to Peace, commissioned by tonight's orchestra, meshes Christian, Jewish and Islamic musical traditions to tell the story of Abraham and Isaac.
The Booker prize winning novelist Pat Barker, author of the Regeneration Trilogy on the subject of the First World War, and the poet Owen Sheers discuss writers', musicians' and painters' responses to war including the work of Keith Douglas, UA Fanthorpe, David Jones, Alun Lewis and the paintings of CW Nevinson. The reader is Samuel West.

The second play celebrating Nobel Prize winning Nigerian writer Wole Soyinka's 80th birthday. This is a semi-autobiographical account of events that took place under the brutal regime of Nigerian dictator General Sani Abacha. Based on the experience of Soyinka's daughter, an academic forced to flee Nigeria by the threats against her father's family. Whilst in london, en route to the US, she gives birth prematurely only to find the newborn trapped in a stateless limbo. The British authorities say they are unable to issue the newborn with a visa and therefore the family cannot join Soyinka in the US.
Clemency Burton-Hill presents the second programme in a new series showcasing the talents of the BBC's New Generation Artists.
As part of the BBC's commitment to developing and nurturing young talent, BBC Radio 3 launched its New Generation Artists scheme in the autumn of 1999. Now well into its second decade, the scheme has acquired the reputation of being a world leader for young artists. Every autumn six to seven artists or groups who are beginning to make a mark on the national and international music scene are invited to join the scheme, which offers them unique opportunities to develop their considerable talents. These include concerts in London and around the UK, appearances and recordings with the BBC Orchestras, special studio recordings for Radio 3, and, last but not least, appearances at the Proms.

Sarah's guest this week is the author Alexander McCall Smith, best known for The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. His other book series include 44 Scotland Street and The Sunday Philosophy Club, while his most recent novel, The Forever Girl, was published earlier this year. He was appointed a CBE in 2006 for services to literature.
As well as being an acclaimed writer, Alexander is an expert on medical law and bioethics, and has served on British and international committees concerned with these issues. He is the former chairman of the British Medical Journal Ethics Committee, the former vice-chairman of the Human Genetics Commission of the UK, and a former member of the International Bioethics Committee of UNESCO.
He is also an amateur bassoonist, co-founder of The Really Terrible Orchestra, and helped to found Botswana's first centre for opera training, the Number 1 Ladies' Opera House.

For most of his life, Leoš Janácek was known primarily as a folklorist and teacher and didn't achieve international recognition as a composer until he was into his sixties. He was a man of immense drive and determination and, alongside his passion for the folk music of his native Moravia, Janácek improved the standard of music-making and music education in Brno where he spent most of his life.
Donald Macleod introduces works from the years leading up to Janacek's first big success including a sample of the wealth of folk songs he collected, a ghostly orchestral ballad, a piano piece written at a time of personal and professional crisis, and part of the opera which finally put Janácek's career as a serious composer firmly on the map.

This lunchtime Les Arts Florissants appears on an intimate scale, performing Rameau's only chamber music - the lively and virtuosic Pièces de clavecin en concerts. Of One Mind - A Murmuration of Starlings
Have you ever seen one of those wonderful twisters in the sky consisting entirely of starlings - flocking and dancing in their hundreds of thousands?
Known as a murmuration, the dancing twisting patterns must be one of the most magical sights, and sounds, in the natural world, and can be seen in city and countryside right across the UK.
Ham Wall, in the Avalon Marshes, close to Glastonbury Tor, in Somerset, is home to one of the most spectacular murmurations, and at dawn and dusk over 500,000 starlings take to the skies in great clouds, unpredictable in their numbers and behaviour, but worth seeking out for natural drama.
So why do the murmurations happen, and how do the birds avoid crashing into each other whilst flying? The latest theory is known as scale free correlation - how birds like starlings appear to share one mind.
David Bramwell, musician and keen amateur bird watcher takes his chance to share the sharp eyes and ears of ornithologist, Tony Whitehead of the RSPB, and musician and artist, Kathy Hinde, on a mission to film and record the starlings mysterious patterns and dramatic sounds, using both in concerts and exhibitions.
When you have heard a murmuration on such a scale you may wonder why they are not called a 'jet engine'.... such is the volume of half a million birds taking off at dawn.

Living and Present: Laurie Anderson on Performance Art
Pioneering artist Laurie Anderson traces the roots of performance art - the most daring and popular of contemporary art forms, which blurs the boundaries of art, theatre and dance.
More and more artists are drawing on the live quality of performance in their work: the artist Marina Abramovic was present for three months in New York's Museum of Modern Art for visitors to lock eyes with, silent and motionless; this year's prestigious Venice Biennale Golden Lion prize was given to the performance artist Tino Sehgal; and the newest addition to the Tate are the Tate Tanks, dedicated to Performance art. But what is this transient medium and where has it come from?
Laurie Anderson, famous for bringing her song O Superman to the British pop charts in the 1980s, focuses on this innovative and elusive art form, drawing out the qualities of ritual and gathering, pain and endurance. She turns to the earliest recordings of the Futurist artist, Marinetti's Zang Tumb Tumb, the actions of German artist Joseph Beuys; the influence of John Cage in contrast to the risk of Yoko Ono, the sexual politics of Vito Acconci, the confrontation of the Viennese Actionists or British artist Stuart Brisley's offal bath and the explosive shock of Chris Burden's Shoot.

The Red Shoes
Continuing the Sound of Cinema season, ballerina, writer and broadcaster Deborah Bull gives a dancer's take on Powell and Pressburger's best-known film, the 1948 classic 'The Red Shoes', starring Moira Shearer, and based on the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairytale.
Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, together known as The Archers, were one of the most influential and audacious film-makers of the 1930s and 40s. Their groundbreaking works include: 'The Red Shoes', 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp', 'A Matter of Life and Death' and 'Black Narcissus'.
Writen and read by Deborah Bull. Bull joined The Royal Ballet in 1981 and became a Principal Ballerina in 1992. After her 20-year career in ballet, she went on to become Creative Director of the Royal Opera House, as well as an author and broadcaster. She is currently Director of Cultural Partnerships at King's College, London.

Jez Nelson presents three acts from the London-based Loop Collective at his monthly Jazz in the Round night.
Trumpeter Rory Simmons brings his trio Monocled Man featuring guitarist Chris Montague and drummer Jon Scott, in which fiery lines and hard-hitting post-rock grooves meet with expansive, brooding soundscapes. Keys player and electronics expert Dan Nicholls performs an intriguing solo set on a one-of-a-kind instrument - his self-made 'kalimba keyboard', an upsized and amplified thumb piano, manipulated through effects and processing. Plus we've time for some Wedding Music, the title of Kit Downes and Tom Challenger's organ and sax collaboration that explores the subtle nuances of improvised textures, here in the intimate setting of the Cockpit Theatre in Marylebone, London.

Sarah's guest this week is the author Alexander McCall Smith, best known for The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. His other book series include 44 Scotland Street and The Sunday Philosophy Club, while his most recent novel, The Forever Girl, was published earlier this year. He was appointed a CBE in 2006 for services to literature.
As well as being an acclaimed writer, Alexander is an expert on medical law and bioethics, and has served on British and international committees concerned with these issues. He is the former chairman of the British Medical Journal Ethics Committee, the former vice-chairman of the Human Genetics Commission of the UK, and a former member of the International Bioethics Committee of UNESCO.
He is also an amateur bassoonist, co-founder of The Really Terrible Orchestra, and helped to found Botswana's first centre for opera training, the Number 1 Ladies' Opera House.

His passion for this married woman, less than half his age, transformed the last decade of his life and spurred him on to greater heights of creativity. Donald Macleod introduces two works whose heroines were inspired by Kamila - a song-cycle in which a young farmer deserts his family to live with a beautiful gypsy girl, and an opera whose gentle heroine is unable to resist the temptation of an illicit affair with tragic consequences.

Sarah's guest this week is the author Alexander McCall Smith, best known for The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. His other book series include 44 Scotland Street and The Sunday Philosophy Club, while his most recent novel, The Forever Girl, was published earlier this year. He was appointed a CBE in 2006 for services to literature.
As well as being an acclaimed writer, Alexander is an expert on medical law and bioethics, and has served on British and international committees concerned with these issues. He is the former chairman of the British Medical Journal Ethics Committee, the former vice-chairman of the Human Genetics Commission of the UK, and a former member of the International Bioethics Committee of UNESCO.
He is also an amateur bassoonist, co-founder of The Really Terrible Orchestra, and helped to found Botswana's first centre for opera training, the Number 1 Ladies' Opera House.

One of Janácek's favourite places was the peaceful village of Hukvaldy where he'd been born and where, in 1921, he bought a cottage in which he could compose, away from the hectic life of Brno. Shortly afterwards he began work on the opera in which he was able to combine two of his passions - for the natural world which had always been an essential part of his life, and for Kamila Stösslová, the married woman with whom he became obsessed. Donald Macleod introduces this everyday tale of Vixen Sharp-Ears, and Janácek's next opera, whose enigmatic heroine was also inspired by Kamila. Elina Makropulos has lived for over three centuries and, as the elixir which has kept her alive begins to wear off, she realises that there's only one possible solution to her joyless existence.

Sean Rafferty introduces the second concert in this week's series was recorded at the National Concert Hall in Dublin. Lang Lang begins with Mozart's Piano Sonata in G major K 283, which was written while the composer was still a teenager. He concludes with a performance of Chopin's Four Ballades. Chopin is said to have invented the the "Ballade". He told Schumann that the Ballade form was inspired by the poetry of the nationalist poet, Mickiewicz, who was in exile and a member of Chopin's circle in Paris.

Written under the threat of Fascism, it's a passionate national statement, lively with folk rhythms.
By the early 1950s and Shostakovich's 10th Symphony, threat had become reality. This violent, despairing work paints a vivid portrait ofthe horrors of Stalin's Russia. The evening opens with the first of two posthumous premieres this season from the late John Tavener ? some of the last works from England's great musical mystic. Gnosis - written for mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly with solo alto flute,strings and percussion.

Matthew Sweet and his guests, the award-winning poet and librettist Michael Symmons Roberts and musician, priest and broadcaster Richard Coles, explore the inspiration John Tavener took from poems written by George Herbert, John Donne and William Blake. Tonight's Proms broadcast includes The Protecting Veil, which earnt Tavener a nomination for the Mercury Prize and whilst this work takes its cue from an icon and the Orthodox feast of the Protecting Veil of the Mother of God, other pieces by Tavener draw on literary sources.

Clemency Burton-Hill presents another programme in the series showcasing the talents of the BBC's New Generation Artists.
As part of the BBC's commitment to developing and nurturing young talent, BBC Radio 3 launched its New Generation Artists scheme in the autumn of 1999. Now well into its second decade, the scheme has acquired the reputation of being a world leader for young artists. Every autumn six to seven artists or groups who are beginning to make a mark on the national and international music scene are invited to join the scheme, which offers them unique opportunities to develop their considerable talents. These include concerts in London and around the UK, appearances and recordings with the BBC Orchestras, special studio recordings for Radio 3, and, last but not least, appearances at the Proms.
Today, a chance to hear from three current members of the scheme: singers Robin Tritschler and Olena Tokar, and New York-based violinist Elena Urioste.

The legendary Pet Shop Boys make their Proms debut in this Late Night Prom, joining the BBC Singers and BBC Concert Orchestra for the world premiere of A Man from the Future, a new piece for electronics, orchestra, choir and narrator.
The piece is inspired by the life and work of Alan Turing, who helped break the German Enigma code during the Second World War and formulated the concept of the digital computer, but was prosecuted in 1952 for his homosexuality, receiving a posthumous pardon last year. It comes as a timely homage, 60 years after Turing's death.
The concert also includes new orchestral arrangements by renowned film composer Angelo Badalamenti of five Pet Shop Boys songs chosen by Tennant and Lowe, in which they are joined by Chrissie Hynde, as well as the exuberant overture to their 1991 tour, Performance, heard live in concert for the first time.

Janácek's 70th birthday was celebrated with concerts in Prague and Brno, the publication of his biography and an Honorary PhD from Brno University, which pleased him most of all.
Donald Macleod introduces two remarkably youthful works Janácek composed around that time - an exuberant wind sextet and a group of choral settings of nonsense rhymes he came across in the children's supplement of his local paper, as well as a rhapsodic piece for cello and piano inspired by a Russian epic poem.

Pianist, Michael McHale performs a programme of Nocturnes by Chopin and John Field as well as Liszt's adventurous and virtuosic take on Verdi's themes from Rigoletto. He begins the programme with Schubert's Four Impromptus, D. 899 - the four pieces were written and published in 1827, the year before the composer's death.

Fear and Trembling in Copenhagen - In Search of Soren Kierkegaard
Nigel Warburton travels to Copenhagen to explore the life and writings of Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard - often called the father of existentialism - in his bicentenary year.
In Denmark today the name Kierkegaard evokes a mix of pride and uncertainty. His mix of earnestness and irony - angst and comedy, influenced many thinkers and writers in the twentieth century: from Wittgenstein, Jean Paul Sartre and W H Auden, to Woody Allen. But he remains difficult to categorise.
His name means 'graveyard' - fitting for a man often referred to as the father of existentialism: now a byword for angst and despair. But Kierkegaard was an eccentric, paradoxical writer, who can be read in many ways. An anti-intellectualist yet profoundly intellectual; deeply Christian but relentlessly critical of the Church; a philosopher, who hated most philosophy, and a poet, some even say a novelist, who never really wrote poems or novels.
On location in Denmark Nigel Warburton travels to his old apartments and walks the streets this eccentric man took his inspiration from. He also visits the cathedral which Kierkegaard spent his last years attacking, and asks what this controversial Christian thinker can offer us in a highly secular age.

Sarah's guest this week is the author Alexander McCall Smith, best known for The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. His other book series include 44 Scotland Street and The Sunday Philosophy Club, while his most recent novel, The Forever Girl, was published earlier this year. He was appointed a CBE in 2006 for services to literature.
As well as being an acclaimed writer, Alexander is an expert on medical law and bioethics, and has served on British and international committees concerned with these issues. He is the former chairman of the British Medical Journal Ethics Committee, the former vice-chairman of the Human Genetics Commission of the UK, and a former member of the International Bioethics Committee of UNESCO.
He is also an amateur bassoonist, co-founder of The Really Terrible Orchestra, and helped to found Botswana's first centre for opera training, the Number 1 Ladies' Opera House.

In the final year of his life, Janácek's love for Kamila Stösslova became ever more obsessive. He wrote letters to Kamila almost every day, and sometimes twice a day. The intense passion he felt for her found its culminating expression in his 2nd String Quartet. Donald Macleod introduces this most personal of his works, together with another of Janácek's best-loved pieces, prompted by the brilliant fanfares of a military band.

Sean Rafferty introduces the final programme in this series of four piano recitals recorded in Dublin and Belfast. Today's concert was recorded at The Pavilion Theatre, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. Irish pianist, Finghin Collins performs Schumann's Faschingsschwank aus Wien "Phantasiebilder" Op 26, which translates as 'Carnival Scenes from Vienna'. The US composer, Jane O'Leary has been resident in Ireland since 1972, her Five Bagatelles are a a collection of short pieces inspired by Beethoven's own collections of short piano works. Chopin composed the Four Mazurkas Op. 17 in 1832-33, during his first years in Paris. He loved the Polish dance and across the span of his short life he wrote about sixty of mazurkas.

Continuing the Sound of Cinema season, film critic Peter Bradshaw looks at Powell and Pressburger's sensuous 1947 melodrama, 'Black Narcissus'.
Set in a convent in an isolated Himalayan valley, in which tensions are running high, Black Narcissus was based on the 1939 novel of the same name by Rumer Godden. It stars Deborah Kerr, Kathleen Byron and Jean Simmons, and was described by Michael Powell described as the most erotic film he ever made.

Lopa Kothari and Mary Ann Kennedy introduce the first of a weekend of broadcasts from the globe's leading festival of world music, live from the festival site in Charlton Park in Wiltshire. Norwegian Sami star Mari Boine is one of the headliners on the Open Air Stage, and Debademba present their 'big family' style of West African music to the WOMAD audience. On the BBC Radio 3 Charlie Gillett Stage, there are UK debuts for Monsieur Doumani from Cyprus, and Polish gypsy band Caci Vorba. Plus interviews and truck sessions, and Commonwealth Connections from India and Nauru, starting off more than eight hours of live broadcasting from WOMAD.
WOMAD LIVE 2014: BBC Radio 3 returns to the world-famous WOMAD festival for a fifteenth year, broadcasting from the Open Air Stage, the Siam Tent and new for this year, the 'BBC Radio 3 Charlie Gillett Stage'. This sees the Radio 3 stage moving to WOMAD's main arena, and to a stage named after a broadcaster who achieved so much for world music over many years, and was one of the original trio of presenters on Radio 3's World on 3.
MUSIC FEATURE: India
Kala Ramnath is one of the leading Hindustani musicians of her generation. Born into a dynasty of violin players who championed the instrument in Indian classical music in the 20th century, Kala has developed the instrument still further with a mixture of traditional and improvisational repertoire. In her home in Mumbai, Kala demonstrates just how closely the violin is modelled on the human voice.
HERITAGE FEATURE: Nauru
Measuring eight square miles with a total coastline of eighteen and a half miles and a population of just over nine thousand, the Pacific island of Nauru is arguably the least populous actual sovereign country in the world, although officially the Vatican State and then Monaco occupy the first and second spots. Situated in Micronesia, Nauru lies 2,800 miles north east of Australia, and used to be called Pleasant Island before independence in 1968. Itte Detenamo is a super heavyweight lifter, and his chosen music is of Nauruan songs composed by Baron Waqa, a songwriter who is currently the nation's President.
