Nowhere in the British Isles was the Viking connection longer-lasting or deeper than in Scotland. Hundreds of years after their first hit-and-run raids, the Norsemen still dominated huge swathes of the country. But storm clouds were gathering. In 1263 the Norwegian king Haakon IV assembled a fleet of 120 longships to counter Scottish raids on the Norse Hebrides. It was a force comparable in size to the Spanish Armada over three centuries later. But like the Armada, the Norse fleet was eventually defeated by a powerful storm. Driven ashore near present-day Largs, the beleaguered Norsemen were attacked by a Scottish army. The outcome of this vicious encounter would mark the beginning of the end of Norse power in Scotland.

Marine archaeologist Dr Jon Henderson tells the incredible story of the Norsemen in Scotland. Visiting fascinating archaeological sites across Scotland and Norway, he reveals that, although the battle at Largs marked the end of an era for the Norsemen, their presence continued to shape the identity and culture of the Scottish nation to the present day.

The Vienna Philharmonic once again take up residency at the Schönbrunn Palace to bring us their annual Summer Night Concert. Set in the picturesque gardens, this concert is a staple of the classical music calendar.

For the first time, the orchestra welcomes rising star Lorenzo Viotti as guest conductor – one of the most exciting young conductors on the scene. Joining them for this special evening is Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel, whose relationship with the orchestra spans many decades. He brings us arias from Verdi’s Falstaff, Wagner’s Das Rheingold along with Tevye’s song from the musical Fiddler on the Roof.

Projected onto the façade of the Schönbrunn Palace, dancers from the Vienna State Ballet join the orchestra to bring the story of Daphnis and Chloé to life through the power of Ravel’s music.

With music from the worlds of opera, musicals and ballet, together with symphonic works, this concert is a joyous musical summer treat.

It is used in rites of passage such as births, deaths and marriages, and is a favourite for film-makers looking to create that quintessential English pastoral feel. Fans of the work include actor Peter Sallis, who wants a copy of The Lark Ascending to be buried with him, top violinist Tasmin Little, who has played the piece as part of the BBC Proms, and music critic Michael Kennedy, who was a personal friend of Vaughan Williams.

The programme includes a beautiful new performance of the work in the same village hall where it was heard for the first time in December 1920. The Lark Ascending is performed by 15-year-old violin prodigy Julia Hwang and pianist Charles Matthews, using the original arrangement for violin and piano.

The Sky at Night team travels across Great Britain to investigate this and other evidence that suggests the search for life beyond Earth may lie within our own solar system.

Off the east coast of Scotland, Chris Lintott meets Dr Claire Cousins, who explains the fundamental conditions needed for life. She then turns to the ground beneath their feet, where the red rocks along the North Berwick coastline are marked with patterns similar to those seen on Mars. To find out more about how these markings could have formed here - and possibly on Mars - Chris heads to Edinburgh, where Dr Sean McMahon is investigating whether similar patterns can be recreated in the lab.

Meanwhile, in Cardiff, George Dransfield speaks with Professor Jane Greaves, whose paper on the detection of phosphine in the clouds of Venus six years ago caused a stir. Did the phosphine truly exist, and could it point to life? Ongoing research is continuing to build the case for unusual chemistry - and possibly life - on our closest planetary neighbour.

Further out in the solar system, the icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn offer another compelling possibility. Maggie Aderin-Pocock is in Milton Keynes to meet Dr Mark Fox-Powell, whose team are recreating these freezing conditions in the lab to understand how chemistry behaves there. Their work is helping identify what future missions to these icy worlds should look for as potential signs of life, and has even led to the discovery of a new mineral that can only form in such extreme environments.

Across Mars, Venus and the icy moons, one theme emerges: life may not require Earth-like conditions in the way we once assumed. Instead, it could thrive in unexpected environments.

Finally, Pete Lawrence rounds off the programme with a tour of the summer night sky, and we are reminded of how vast our galaxy is and how small our place within it really is.

So, are we alone? The search continues - right here on our cosmic doorstep.

Germans who lived in the former eastern bloc also talk openly about the whirlwind of death and destruction unleashed by the collapse of the Nazi regime. Their stories include a dramatic eyewitness account of when more than 900 inhabitants of a German village committed suicide by drowning rather than risk facing the occupying Soviet army.

Documentary which explores how Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris's careers took off in the 1970s with very distinct takes on country before they ended up uniting as close harmony singers and eventually collaborated on 1987's four-million-selling debut album, Trio.

In the 60s, country music was viewed by most of America as blue collar, and Dolly was country through and through. Linda Ronstadt's take on classic country helped make her the biggest female star in mid-70s America. Folkie Emmylou learned about country from mentor Gram Parsons and, after his death in 1973, she became a bandleader in her own right. It was Emmylou and Linda - the two west coast folk rockers - who voiced their mutual appreciation of Dolly, the mountain girl singer from Tennessee, when they became early students of her work.

The artists talk about uniting as harmony singers and eventually collaborating on their debut album, Trio. The album helped launch the mountain music revival that would peak with the soundtrack to O Brother, Where Art Thou? In 2012, Linda Ronstadt was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, which left her unable to sing, but 2016 saw unreleased songs from their sessions compiled to create a third Trio album. This is the story of how their alliance made them pioneers in bringing different music worlds together and raising the game for women in the country tradition.
