Jangly and heartfelt, it’s perfect music for the tortured soul; albeit one with a comfortable and privileged life.

Until that is, Cat comes crashing in with her questions. Are some of Morrissey’s more recent statements problematic and if so, can we separate the arts from the artist? What else can’t we enjoy anymore?

A rummage through his parent’s attic suggests LOTS, it turns out. Mike’s dilemma contorts him with anxiety as the family pick their way through this new minefield. Can we ‘offset’ liking problematic things?

Scrambled EGG

Comedy duo Egg - Anna Leong Brophy and Emily Lloyd-Saini - write and star in this brand-new comedy special, exploring what it means to be mixed race, and their very different experiences growing up in the UK.

An increasingly surreal dinner date turns into a trip down memory lane for the pair, as a curt waitress guides them grudgingly through some of their formative mixed-race memories.

Through break-out sketches, the duo narrowly avoid coming to blows with streetwise teenage schoolgirls Jacanda and Malika on the streets of north west London, culturally appropriate their own cultural heritage in a Portakabin in Nottingham, and befuddle renowned Race and Socio-Political expert Professor Jojo Mojojo with a simple question. All the while waiting for their main course to arrive.

Can the mixed-race experience really be defined in a single comedy special? The Egg girls aren’t sure, but they take a crack at it in Scrambled Egg.

999 - Which Service Do You Require?

999 was the first emergency telephone number in the world when it was launched on June 30th, 1937.

Within the first week, more than a thousand calls were made to the service with one burglar arrested less than five minutes after a member of the public had dialled 999. Impressive stuff. But there were teething problems...

In the early days, only those wealthy enough to own a telephone could hope to avail of the service. Exchange room operators complained of stress caused by the raucous buzzers which alerted them to 999 calls. Advancing technology connected with the system began to alter the relationship between public and police. Almost unbelievably in hindsight, the 999 service wasn't made fully available across the nation until 1976.

Exactly 80 years after it was introduced, Ian Sansom dials up the remarkable story of our three digit emergency number. Between rare archive, real life-or-death emergencies and interviews with call handlers on the front line, Ian takes a personal look at the evolution of 999 and asks what the future holds for this pioneering British institution.

True stories told live in the USA: Jay Allison introduces tales of learning life’s lessons from one’s parents.

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

First heard on PRX in 2019.

SUN 13:00 Farewell to the Horse by Ulrich Raulff (Omnibus) (b08swrsw)
The relationship between horses and humans is an ancient, profound and complex one.

For millennia horses provided the strength and speed that humans lacked. How we travelled, farmed and fought was dictated by the needs of this extraordinary animal. And then, suddenly, in the 20th century the links were broken and the millions of horses that shared our existence almost vanished, eking out a marginal existence on race-tracks and pony clubs.

Ulrich Raulff's book is an engaging, brilliantly written and moving discussion of what horses once meant to us. Cities, farmland, entire industries were once shaped as much by the needs of horses as humans. The intervention of horses was fundamental in countless historical events.

They were sculpted, painted, cherished, admired; they were thrashed, abused and exposed to terrible danger. From the Roman Empire to the Napoleonic Empire every world-conqueror needed to be shown on a horse. Tolstoy once reckoned that he had cumulatively spent some nine years of his life on horseback.

A bestseller in Germany, this is a superb monument to the endlessly various creature who has so often shared and shaped our fate.

Omnibus of five parts.

SUN 15:30 In Godzilla's Footsteps (b01y1gxj)
Godzilla, the giant green lizard which levels Tokyo skyscrapers with a sweep of his enormous tail, was the response of Japan's film makers in the 1950s to the national trauma of the atomic attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In the wake of 2011's Tsunami, the nation's artists have been similarly inventive in turning the disaster into art. The "post 3/11 movement" takes inspiration from the devastating images of flooded cities, smoking nuclear reactors and grief stricken victims which emerged after the earthquake and tsunami.

Mark Rickards meets artists and musicians who have turned the disaster into art, and asks whether they have found a suitable response to the devastating events which shook Japan.

27-year-old installation artist Tsubasa Kato volunteered to visit Fukushima to help clear up the rubble. With the help of 300 local residents who had lost their homes, Kato recently constructed a three storey lighthouse from the rubble of ruined houses and schools. The lighthouse now stands looking out over the sea, as a symbol of what happened in March 2011.

The performance artists Chim Pom, a six person collective, donned protective radioactive suits and visited the devastated Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, holding up symbolic referees' red cards in front of the cracked dome of the nuclear reactor. Videoed for a performance art piece they admitted they were frightened of the radiation levels but "wanted to respond to these life changing events by placing ourselves in the middle of the radiation zone."

The video artist Kota Takeuchi took a job at the devastated nuclear plant. His work includes a video which shows a worker pointing an accusing finger at the video camera which keeps watch over the site. Later he called a press conference to harangue Tepco, operator of the plant about the conditions of workers inside.

With contributions from Tsubasa Kato, Chim Pom, Kota Takeuchi amongst others, Mark Rickards explores Japan's artistic response to the tragedy.

Main Hunter ...... Nigel Pilkington

At the time of writing The Bloody Chamber in the late 1970s, Angela Carter was disaffected by both sides of the feminist debate. She re-worked traditional fairy tales from her own unique, literary outsider’s point of view, putting women at the centre of the stories.

With their feisty heroines and rgiastic mash-up of beasts, shape-shifters and ghouls, her extraordinary tales are the most perfect example of her style, not just for her incomparable prose, but also in the dizzying twists and turns of perception, fantasy and myth.

Controversially influenced by De Sade, she embraced the erotic, explored our deepest and darkest urges, and subverted the roles of hunter and prey, master and mistress so that, instead of male sexuality, it is the female that becomes transgressive and powerful.

Series 2

4. The Patient

Charlotte and Lillian are spending time together as part of a Befriend the Elderly scheme. They may bicker about everything from signs of dementia to the appeal of Harry Styles, but underneath it’s clear they are two kindred spirits. Two selfish, self-absorbed spirits, but ones who mirror and rely on each other nonetheless.

Very nearly 30, Charlotte is still living at home with her parents and chronically unable to figure out what to do with her life. Beneath her attempt at do-gooding is barely disguised despair. She's terrified she is no good. Useless. Unloveable. She looks to Lillian to provide some meaning to her life - if she can help to improve Lillian’s life somehow, she’d feel a lot better about her own. And there’s all the kudos and social media likes that come with charity work - not to mention the lure of Lillian's large spare room.

Lillian returns from a stay in hospital to find Charlotte’s taken over the house, and is being her usual irritating self. Lillian is keen to get rid of her, but there’s just one problem - she can no longer ignore the fact she is getting older and needs help around the house.

Guess who’s ready to step up to the plate.

MON 14:00 Golden Hill by Francis Spufford (b08r1r5c)
6. Detained

New York, a small town on the tip of Manhattan Island, 1746. One rainy evening, a charming and handsome young stranger, fresh off the boat from England, pitches up to a counting house on Golden Hill Street, with a suspicious yet compelling proposition. He has an order for a thousand pounds in his pocket that he wishes to cash. But can he be trusted?

This is New York in its infancy, a place where a young man with a fast tongue can invent himself afresh, fall in love, and find a world of trouble.

Francis Spufford says of his book, "Golden Hill is just a novel. More specifically, it's an eighteenth century novel. It's set in the winter of 1746, in what was then the very small British colonial town of New York; but it's also written like a novel from the eighteenth century. So the story of the charming but unreliable-seeming young Mr Smith, who turns up from London with a document in his pocket that may be a fraud or may be worth a fortune, is as hectically stuffed with event as it would have been if Fielding or Smollett had written it.

"Eighteenth-century readers expected to get their money's worth, and Golden Hill contains (among other things) a mystery, a political intrigue, a love story, a ball, a duel, a high-stakes card game, a trial, a dash of horror, a play-within-a-play, some surprisingly graphic sex and a rooftop chase. As a slow writer, I enjoyed working on something that runs fast. It was intricate fun devising and winding up the book's clockwork. But I hope it's also a story that feels alive, and makes the past feel alive too, while Mr Smith runs for his life, and the snow falls on Manhattan Island."

Animals

Comedian and writer Andy Hamilton is a familiar and much-loved voice on Radio 4. Now for the first time on the network, he presents a collection of observations and reminiscences about both his personal life and his 40 years working in comedy.

Over this 4 part series, Andy looks at Childhood, Politics, The Human Body and Animals. Using comic observation and personal anecdotes he will explore each theme, examining how much (or how little) things have changed in the 60ish years he's been on this planet. Each programme will provide 30 minutes of thoughtful, social history, but packed with laughs.

In this episode Andy looks at the subject of Animals. From fond memories of his childhood cat Timmy's lifelong battle with the Hoover; through working with straw-boater-wearing dolphins for Not the Nine o'clock News and being unnerved by a sea lion during a phone call. This week Andy also offers many useful animal-related tips including: what to do should you ever find an unwelcome bear on your doorstep. From 2017.

Rob Roy

Rob Roy by Walter Scott
Adapted by Robin Brooks

Our Rob Roy has dispensed with the Jacobite setting and updates the story to the 20th century. It is 1924 and 20-year-old Frank falls foul of his father. He has spent a year in Paris, supposedly learning the business, but actually hanging out with Imagist poets. When he refuses to join the business his father sends him north to stay with his Uncle - a radical and mixed up in the cause of Irish Nationalism.

Scott's book doesn't really depend on the historical trappings on which the author's reputation now rests. A son being banished by his father because he wants to be a long-haired poet is a perennial situation, as is the love-triangle between Frank, Die Vernon and her wicked cousin Rashleigh. With this production the listener is asked to regard Scott as a novelist like any other, concerned with the workings of the human heart and how they play out in a society more like ours.

With David Tennant as Walter Scott

The Pound in Your Pocket

Fifty years after the events, Frances Cairncross looked back at the story of the Devaluation crisis of 1967.

It was one of the iconic phrases that will always be associated with Harold Wilson's premiership: in a TV broadcast, a day after his government had decided to reduce the value of the pound sterling by just over 14 percent against the dollar, Wilson assured the nation that, nevertheless, "the pound in your pocket" was still worth the same.

As a young journalist, Frances Cairncross covered the story - her father, Sir Alec Cairncross, was a senior Treasury official closely involved in the discussions before and the consequences following the November 18th move. He wrote in his diary "at 10.35, I saw the TV screen show a £1 note with DEVALUED printed across it..."

With Peter Jay, William Davis, William Keegan, David Walker, Robin Butler and Professors Robert Neild and Kathleen Burk, and featuring readings from Alec Cairncross's diary of the period.

Producer: Simon Elmes

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in November 2017.

TUE 14:00 Golden Hill by Francis Spufford (b08r1vlx)
7. Surprise

TUE 14:30 You Must Take the A Train (b01k2f7s)
New Yorker columnist and author Adam Gopnik confesses to 'a perverse love' of his city's subway system. In particular, he likes the two hour run of the A train from the tip of Manhattan to the Atlantic Ocean in the outer borough of Queens.

Along the way he encounters vendors, preachers, rappers, beggars and the homeless passengers who live in the subway cars and in the tunnels.

As a jazz lover, he celebrates Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's song as an anthem of black migration. which imitates the sound of the train and insists:
"You must take the A train
To go to Sugar Hill way up in Harlem."

In 1932 punters queued to take the first A train ride as it went express along the west side of the city. It opened up suburbs, with a fast commute for workers in the Garment District, Times Square and in the offices and restaurants of Midtown. It also linked the dynamic established community of Harlem with the newer black neighborhoods in Brooklyn.

Gopnik admits to enjoying the graffiti that spread across the subway cars in the seventies and eighties but acknowledges that this was a sign of how New York had lost control. Since most New Yorkers don't own a car and the subway is the artery of a city, that dysfunctional slide was disastrous.

It's only in the last fifteen years that the system has become safe and comparatively pleasant again. For a reporter like Gopnik, it's a perfect way to indulge in people watching and the best subway line to get a real sense of the city. However, depending on your mood, it can either be enervating or profoundly depressing, because it still reveals the seedy, aggressive, desperate and heartbreaking side of New York.

The Skye Boat Song

For many hearing The Skye Boat Song brings back a wealth of childhood memories, as the words "Speed Bonnie Boat Like a Bird on the Wing" tell the story of the escape of Bonnie Prince Charlie, dressed as a maid to the Isle of Skye, after this defeat at the battle of Culloden.

Originally written by Sir Harold Boulton and Anne MacLeod back in the 1870's, we explore the beauty of this song and how it continues to touch people's lives across the world in very different ways.

Contributors in this programme include:

The Queen's Piper, who has played this tune in happy and sad times, recalls playing it outside the Queen's window and leading Princess Margaret's cortege. A New Zealand artist shares his memories of time spent with his father, and the sound of him whistling the song on their way home as dusk fell. A sailor from the Isle of Skye, describes his connection with the spirituality of piece and the Loch on which he sails.

Acclaimed violinist Tasmin Little shares her own arrangement of the piece and explains why it works so well musically. An Australian mum, tells how important this song has been in connecting with the two girls she has adopted from China. Gaelic Singer Maggie MacInnes tells the history of the piece.
The programme includes music by Julian Lloyd Webber, The Corries and Pete Lashley.

Producer - Rachel Matthews.

Waverley

Waverley by Walter Scott
Adapted by Mike Harris

A gripping tale of love, war and divided loyalties with Scotland in open rebellion against the Union with England.

It's 1745 and 21year old Edward Waverley, a newly commissioned red-coat officer, is posted to Scotland on the eve of Bonnie Prince Charlie's violent bid for power. His father is a rising minister in the ruling Hanoverian state, but the beloved Uncle who brought him up is an old Jacobite, loyal to the exiled Stewart dynasty.

Waverley falls in love with two very different Scottish girls - the cautious, loyalist, lowlander Rose Bradwardine, and the fiery highland rebel Flora. He goes AWOL for Flora just as her brother Fergus is rallying their clan to fight for Charlie.

When Waverley is accused by his Commanding Officer of a treasonable flirtation with the enemy, he joins the uprising in a fit of pique and helps defeat an English army at the battle of Prestonpans.

When he finds out that he has caused the arrest of Uncle, he returns to London to try to clear his name.

Broadcaster Steve Penk digs out more of the funniest clips of live radio mistakes with exclusive access to his own collection of audio material from around the world.

Radio bloopers have been around for as long as radio itself. They’re mainly endearing and add a humanising element to the radio and to the presenters on it.

A blooper is defined as an embarrassing public blunder, but as long as it's someone else's mistake, most of us are quite capable of getting past the embarrassment to enjoy the humour. The immediacy of live-to-air radio is part of its strength, but also very exposing. If there's a slip of the tongue, it's broadcast into the ether moments later, especially in the early days of broadcast radio when almost everything was done live on the air.

There have been some celebrated 'bloopers' over the years - from 'colourful' language, to laughing fits, technical glitches to amusing mispronunciations.

WED 14:30 Casa Negra: The Real Casablanca (b04g83zy)
The years since the Millennium have been a tumultuous time for Morocco, with the arrival of a new, more progressive king and reaction against terrorist bombings in 2003 helping to galvanise a burgeoning arts community - and nowhere has this been more the case than in the country's largest city of Casablanca.

Film-makers and musicians there have been at the vanguard of those questioning repressive political and social structures, in part because it is the city where earlier experiments with a more capitalistic economic model have led to a particularly apparent division between rich and poor.

Professor Andrew Hussey, who's been visiting the city for many years, hears from many of the key players in what's been labelled the Nayda movement - including the director of the ground breaking movie 'Casa Negra' and the rapper whose recent imprisonment for criticising the police suggests that the movement still has some distance to go before Moroccan artists can fully exploit the freedoms enjoyed by those in Europe and the USA who have offered them such inspiration.

World's End on Sea

Justin has invited the "nicest woman in showbiz", Rebecca Front, to join them. Little does he know of the history between Mel and Rebecca, dating back to an appearance they both made on Celebrity Supermarket Sweep.

It turns out that Justin also doesn't know much about Houdini - believing him to be an Italian woman. Luckily Dave, fearing the show may be a disaster causing him to miss out on the free lighter promised by the Mayor, is on hand to rewrite the play.

Mel persuades Rebecca to perform a radio first, a recreation of one of Houdini's most daring stunts. But will the truth of what really happened on Supermarket Sweep ever be revealed? Will the show restore the fortunes of the once fashionable seaside town? Will Dave get his free lighter?

The Rum Bunch is Justin Edwards (The Consultants, The Odd Half Hour, Newsjack, Sorry I've Got No Head, The Thick of It), Mel Giedroyc (Mel and Sue, Bake Off, Let It Shine) and Dave Mounfield (Count Arthur Strong, This Is Jinsy).

Imran Yusuf: Relabelled

We all have labels. Some we're given and some we actively choose. In his first show for Radio 4 Imran Yusuf ponders one label he was born with - man.

How do you learn to be a man and what does being a 'man' even mean? In this autobiographical audience show, Imran looks at where he got his role models from as a boy, what he thought being a man was all about and how that view changed radically as he became an adult. Jackie Chan might have been his inspiration when he was young but it was a woman who sparked self-awareness and change.

This is a very funny and honest account of his life and changing attitudes to manliness.

Imran earned a Best Newcomer nomination in the Fosters Awards for his first Edinburgh show in 2010.

THU 14:00 Golden Hill by Francis Spufford (b08r1xfg)
9. Arrest

Ermonela Jaho on Mother Teresa

Since her death in 1997, it's been fashionable in some quarters to decry the work of Mother Teresa among India's poor. Here fellow Albanian - the opera singer Ermonela Jaho, offers an alternative view of the nun who dedicated her life to running homes in Calcutta and later around the world, providing food, shelter and care for the poor and dispossessed.

Despite her hard-line views on abortion and despite criticism over her dealings with some of the most brutal regimes, Mother Teresa was purely a force for good, argues Ermonela Jaho. She's joined by the biographer Anne Sebba.

Written by Francis Spufford

A Waters Company production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in May 2017.

FRI 14:30 Trollope (b03qf7r5)
This is the story of Anthony Trollope, an (apparently) utterly English and conservative writer, whose life cuts against what Barchester readers might expect of him. This was a man raised by high born parents who had lost their money. He was bullied in his teens and joined the Post Office - taking work in Ireland to escape professional and financial difficulties.

Trollope fell in love with the Irish and the English literati even accused him of 'going native', yet he became one of England's best loved novelists. He wrote over 50 books, insisted that he only wrote for money, and penned many of them on trains en route to inspect rural post offices. What kind of a man was he? And why does his work still resonate so strongly for readers across the English-speaking world. Is it, as WH Auden said, because he's one of the only English novelists to truly understand money and work?

Presented by the poet Michael Symmons Roberts

The Voice of Trollope: Hamilton Berstock

Producer: Faith Lawrence

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2014.

But why is Cayce's boss at the ad agency so interested in it?

William Gibson's fast-moving thriller concluded by Lorelei King.

Abridged by Ron Roberts.

Producer: David Jackson Young.

Made for BBC 7 and first broadcast in February 2007.

FRI 18:30 Off the Page (b00wlgjc)
I Don't Know

"I don't know" - three little words so hard to say nowadays. Doubt and uncertainty are out, confident assertions are in. Opinions, even received ones, are the order of the day. The temptation is always to bluff our way with some kind of response, however little we know about the subject in hand.

Phil Hammond is a doctor and Kathy Sykes is a science professor. John Harris is a journalist whose job is to express opinions. Are they able simply to admit: "I don't know"? Dominic Arkwright presides over new writing and straight-to-the-point discussion.

Producer: Beth O'Dea.
