SAT 09:00 Comedy Controller (m000sy0r)
Galton and Simpson

Writing duo Ray Galton and Alan Simpson's choose their favourite radio comedy, including some of their own: Take it from Here [1958], Ray's a Laugh [1949], Round the Horne [1967], Hancock's Half Hour [1958] and Steptoe and Son [1974].

Ray Galton & Alan Simpson, the comedy writing duo famous for such classic comedies as Hancock's Half Hour and Steptoe and Son, started writing together in 1948. They met in a Milford Sanatorium where they were being treated for TB when they were just seventeen and at the start of their career they earned just five shillings a joke. They went on to write over 600 scripts. They recall their early influences such as Frank Muir and Dennis Norden, as they introduce the comedy show "Take It From Here". They also talk fondly of post-war comic actor Ted Ray, as they introduce "Ray's a Laugh".

They remember the magic created by Kenneth Horne and his gang of comedians in the classic show "Round The Horne". Then it's time for a bit of self- indulgence as they look back at some of their best work, writing Hancock's Half Hour. They reminisce about how they met Tony, and what it was like to tap out those first scripts on an old typewriter in their little office in Shepherd's Bush. The episode they've chosen is from 1958, called Sunday Afternoon at Home, and provides a fine example of the Galton and Simpson humour as Tony Hancock's dry delivery captures just what it's like to be truly bored.

They recall the inspirations behind "Steptoe and Son". They admit that the idea came out of sheer desperation as they tried to write a show for the comedy playhouse. This first episode, The Desperate Hours (Galton and Simpson's personal favourite) was born in 1962 and over the next twelve years we were treated to five series on radio and a further eight television series.

Alan Simpson died in 2017 aged 87.
Ray Galton died in 2018 aged 88.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 7 in 2003.

SAT 12:30 The Missing Hancocks (b08k2ctk)
Series 3

The Racehorse

The Missing Hancocks recreates those episodes of the classic Hancock's Half Hour that have been wiped or lost from the archive. Something else has gone missing in this episode from the second series - the lad 'imself, who had absconded to Rome. In 1955, he was replaced for the first three episodes by the Goon Show's Harry Secombe. In this recreation, he has been replaced by Andy Secombe - Harry's son. Not heard since then, this is a real piece of comedy history.

The first modern sitcom, Hancock's Half Hour made stars of Tony Hancock, Sid James and Kenneth Williams, and launched Ray Galton and Alan Simpson on one of the most successful comedy-writing partnerships in history. But 20 episodes of the show are missing from the BBC archives. Now, after two highly successful series, another five of those episodes have been lovingly re-recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC Radio Theatre.

Tonight's episode: The Racehorse. With Tony Hancock indisposed, Harry Secombe has 10 bob left so Bill decides to spend it on a racehorse. The fact that it only has three legs doesn't deter Sid from entering it in the Britannia Steeplechase.

Written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, and with the classic score newly recorded by the BBC Concert Orchestra, the show stars Andy Secombe, Kevin Eldon, Simon Greenall, Robin Sebastian and Susy Kane. The Racehorse was first broadcast on the 3rd May, 1955.

Produced by Ed Morrish & Neil Pearson.

Written by Ray Galton & Simpson

Music recorded by the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Levon Parikian.

A BBC Radio Comedy Production.

SAT 13:00 Archive on 4 (b09lvy6l)
Frankenstein Lives!

Mary Shelley's extraordinary, ground-breaking novel about the creation of a living being who becomes a monster. Cultural historian and writer Christopher Frayling considers how the story of Victor Frankenstein and his creature has become a creation myth for our age.

Frankenstein is one of a handful of works whose title has passed into the language of everyday life and has been adapted countless times for cinema, radio, television and theatre - with each new generation discovering the unique power of the original.

In the overwhelmingly Christian society of 1818, the notion of man creating life was both unthinkable and blasphemous. Two centuries later, the moral dilemmas of the original story continue to challenge and perplex us. After Dr Christiaan Barnard performed the first heart transplant in 1967, he proclaimed "I am the new Frankenstein'. Since then we have truly entered an age of genetically and surgically modified nature - from cloned sheep to disease-resistant crop strains. Inevitably these developments are met with newspaper headlines that scream Frankenstein!

Christopher Frayling uses his expert knowledge to lead us through the rich and unsettling history of the Frankenstein myth, amidst a host of chilling archive recordings and insightful contributions from filmmakers, writers and scientists. He explores how and why, 200 years after it was born, Mary Shelley's nightmare creation is still very much alive and kicking.

Michael Morpurgo

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the widely respected children's author and the former Children's Laureate, Sir Michael Morpurgo. He styles himself as a 'story-teller/writer' and the themes he explores are the relationships between young and old, children and animals and children's experiences of loneliness and self-reliance.
He was initially planning on a career in the military and trained at Sandhurst, but a change of direction led him to study English at university and become a teacher and then, when he was aware his class were bored with a book he was reading to them, started telling them his own stories.

Together with his wife, Clare, he set up the charity Farms for City Children in Devon to give inner-city children the opportunity to experience life on a farm, working with animals and being close to nature. The charity now has three farms and they have been visited by more than 30,000 children. He was the third Children's Laureate and says he is devoted to giving children a love of books and reading. His own works include War Horse, Kensuke's Kingdom, Why the Wales Came and, most recently, Private Peaceful.

Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

First heard on PRX in August 2019.

SUN 12:30 Susan Calman - Keep Calman Carry On (b071whf9)
Series 1

Holiday with John Finnemore

Susan Calman is the least relaxed person she knows. She has no down time, no hobbies (unless you count dressing up your cats in silly outfits) and her idea of relaxation is to play Grand Theft Auto, an hour into which she is in a murderous rage with sky high blood pressure. Her wife had to threaten to divorce her to make her go on holiday last year. Her first for four years. But she's been told by the same long-suffering wife, that unless she finds a way to switch off, and soon, she's going to be unbearable.

So Susan is going to look at her options and try to immerse herself in the pursuits that her friends find relaxing, to find her inner zen and outer tranquillity. Each week she will ditch the old Susan Calman and attempt to find the new Susan Calm, in a typically British leisure pursuit.

This time John Finnemore takes her on a spontaneous holiday.

Keep Calman Carry On is an audience stand up show in which Susan reports on how successful she's been - both at relaxing and at the pursuit itself - as well as playing in and discussing a handful of illustrative clips from her efforts. It's an attempt to find out how people find solace or sanctuary in these worlds and how Susan can negotiate her own place in them.

Producer: Lyndsay Fenner.

At the agency, things have been running remarkably smoothly in his absence. Still high on the success of his Christmas campaign for Walton’s department store, Joe (Mathew Baynton) is filling Hardacre’s shoes as creative director, while accounts manager Amanda (Josie Lawrence) is enjoying herself as de facto head of the agency. Only art director Teddy (Rasmus Hardiker) frets about the whereabouts of their missing leader.

As Joe discovers the perks of being creative top dog, running with a new crowd and making a new friend (Oliver Chris), everyone begins to ask themselves the same question...

Who needs Rupert Hardacre?

TUE 11:00 Good Luck Professor Spiegelhalter (b09kpmys)
Whether we believe in luck or not, we do use the word- a lot! More as a figure of speech than an article of faith perhaps but some do pray for luck, others fantasise about it - and bad luck or misfortune is a staple of comedy

Can luck be said to exist as some force in our lives and if so, what is its nature? How have people thought about luck in the past and what's changed today? Can you bring good luck upon yourself - there's a school of thought these days that thinks you can without appealing to the divine or supernatural.

In Good Luck Professor Spiegelhalter, the Winton Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk at Cambridge University looks at notions of luck in gambling, traces the origins of how we think about fate and fortune, the religious and psychological view of luck and how the emergence of theory of probability changed our view of it.

He is convinced by the philosopher Angie Hobbs that there is one form of luck it is rational to believe in and by psychologist Richard Wiseman that there is a secular solution to bringing about good fortune in your life.

Good Luck Professor Spiegelhalter, is presented by David Spiegelhalter and produced in Salford by Kevin Mousley.

So, Gossip and Goddesses is born – Ummi Kumar gathers together her favourite inspirational women at Wembley Community Centre, aided by her millennial great granddaughter Maya and her arch nemesis “frenemy” Geeta, leader of the local Asian Ladies Silver Bats community group.

WED 10:00 Esther Waters (b01r51f0)
Episode 1

Set against a background of gambling and horseracing; Esther Waters is a stirring tale of how a servant girl makes her way in Victorian England.

Forced to leave the home of her brutal stepfather, Esther takes a job as a maid at 'Woodview', a country estate owned by a nouveau riche racing family.

First published in 1894, George Moore's novel is dramatised in two parts by Sharon Oakes.

Mrs Rivers ..... Joanne Froggatt
Leopold ..... Hugh Simon
George ..... Hugh Simon
Demon ..... Stephen Hoyle
Peggy ..... Lisa Brookes
Mrs Latch ..... Melissa Jane Sinden
Mrs Barfield ..... Melissa Jane Sinden

Mrs Spires ..... Fiona Clarke

Esther's tale is a slice of Victorian life that is rarely shown; single parenting, wet nursing, divorce, gambling, and religious zealotry. Through her we discover exactly what it feels like to be poor and powerless. The book was banned until Gladstone revoked it, saying it was compassionate, moral and humane; and after that it became a best seller.

Celebrated author Colm Toibin championed Esther Waters as a neglected Classic for Radio 4's Open Book programme.

Director: Gary Brown

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2013.

WED 11:00 Sisters in Satire: The Pioneering Women of Comedy (m000szng)
1. June, Betty and Victoria

From the dawn of broadcast comedy, women played a vital but largely overlooked role; more in the background rather than the forefront. What impact did the sisters of satire from the 60’s and 70’s have on the comedy we know today and what was their cultural influence? In the less enlightened sixties and seventies, women were often the butt of the joke, rather than making them.

Just because they weren’t the stars of the show didn’t mean their influence wasn’t felt. June Whitfield, Eleanor Bron and Miriam Margolyes were all quietly but firmly making their name in comedies such as The Glums, The Establishment Club and The Betty Witherspoon Show. These women paved the way for comedians and actors such as Jan Ravens, Meera Syal and Linda Smith.

Samira Ahmed in conversation with actor and director Arabella Weir, former radio producer and novelist Lissa Evans discusses some of the best sitcoms from the Radio 4 archives and listen again to the The Betty Witherspoon Show, Week Ending and Victoria Wood – As Seen On TV and assess the impact these funny women have had on contemporary comedy and the extent of their satirical legacy.

He looks at the cultural difference in the Japanese approach to numbers and asks whether there is something fundamental in Japanese culture that keeps them at the upper end of international numeracy league tables.

Alex explores the language used to describe numbers themselves, the songs taught in schools to teach children their times tables, and the passion the Japanese still show for the ancient but foolproof abacus, even in the computer age. He visits the national abacus competition in Kyoto to see the incredible mathematical feats achieved by children as young as 5 and discovers why abacus users actually use a different part of the brain to most people doing mathematical problems, and whether this could be the key to their superior number skills.

THU 07:30 Between Ourselves with Marian Keyes (m000srg0)
Health

Back for a second series, Marian Keyes continues to be a publishing sensation. Her works of fiction - Rachel's Holiday, The Break and her latest, Grown Ups, among many others - have sold in their millions across the globe.

Marian reads selections from her non-fiction writing in conversation with her friend, the actor Tara Flynn.

With the on-going international unpleasantness – and in the brief respite between lockdowns - this series was recorded without a studio audience at Marian’s home in County Dublin, Ireland. If you listen carefully you might hear the number 96A bus rumbling past, outside.

What we might lack in a studio audience reaction we hope to make up for in warmth and witty, good-natured companionship. The first series was described in The Observer as “a laugh out loud hoot” and the Daily Mail called it “bright, funny and clever”.

This week's theme is health. Alongside the craic, Marian explores her love of chemist shops, recalls a disastrous kettlebell class and... is hers really the sickest family in Ireland?

Producer: Steve Doherty

THU 14:30 Anuta - An Island Governed By Love (b00k8lfz)
Anuta, the story of the South Pacific Island where life has remained unchanged for hundreds of years.

Anuta is a unique island. Situated in the South Pacific it is home to 300 people, giving it a population density to rival Bangladesh. But it's a place where people follow a traditional way of life that goes back hundreds of years. The nearest school is hundreds of miles away and there is no clinic. Few people earn money, but they don't need it. Everything they need they grow or harvest themselves, and have sustained their resources across the generations.

Presenter Huw Cordey visited Anuta to record part of a BBC TV series, South Pacific. He meets the islanders and their Chief, and hears about their lives. He fishes, catches birds and lives with them, discovering along the way the guiding principle that all Anutans live by - 'Arofa', or love.

We also find out how modern life is catching up with the Anutans, and why not everyone there is happy with the island idyll where tradition is all, and individualism is nothing.

Producer - Lizz Pearson.

Evans the Welsh vigilante aims to senselessly bomb the planetary decontaminationists for melting Earth.

As he writes: "... the people fell upon me in great rage, struck me down and almost stifled and smothered me. And I was cruelly beaten and bruised by them with their hands, Bibles and sticks."

THU 23:15 iGod (b00x41ns)
Fame

iGOD is a highly original and funny late-night comedy series. It stars Simon Day (The Fast Show) and David Soul (Starsky & Hutch) and is written by one of the head writers of the BAFTA award-winning The Thick Of It, Sean Gray and produced by Simon Nicholls (Ed Reardon's Week / News At Bedtime).

We all worry about the end of the world, as economists and environmentalists speak in apocalyptic terms everyday. iGOD says that trying to predict the end of the world is as pointless as moisturising an elephant's elbow.

In each episode, an unnamed, all-seeing narrator (David Soul - Starsky and Hutch) shows us that it is stupid to be worrying, as he looks back at some of the most entertaining apocalypses on parallel Earths. Each week our case study is a normal bloke called Ian (Simon Day) who manages to accidentally initiate the apocalypse of a different parallel world through a seemingly harmless single act (telling a lie, being lazy, cooking some lambshanks). A succession of comic vignettes ensue that escalate to the end of a parallel world.

With a full-range of sound effects and wonderfully funny and surreal twists, iGOD will be a true aural extravaganza.

In this episode - how Parallel Earth 888 was wiped out by Ian's desire for fame, which occurs when a meteor crashes into his nose.

The Narrator ...... David Soul

FRI 14:30 Invalid Password - The Password, A History Of Failure (b03g9dqg)
In 2012, a computer cluster was unveiled that can cycle through as many as 350 billion password guesses per second. Passwords have never been weaker and hackers have never been more powerful. For most people, passwords are the first and only line of defence for confidential information online. We've been taught that passwords are the answer - as long as they are elaborate enough.

Your password must not follow any predictable pattern.
Your password must not reference any events you have personally witnessed.
Your password must be a closely guarded personal secret.
Your password must not be something you would use as a password just to get past a password reset check.
Your password must be impossible to remember.

But, today, that's becoming a fantasy - businesses, banks, schools, governments and individuals have all been hacked.

In this social history of the password, Tim Samuels travels to Las Vegas for a password conference where he meets the man responsible for the most popular cracking software, a former US Army interrogator who now builds super computers and a passionate Norwegian who believes passwords are here to stay.

We hear how easy it is to crack Tim's password and witness the elaborate steps some people go through to protect their online information. Have we reached a stage where passwords that are secure enough to resist hacking are too hard to remember? If passwords are living on borrowed time, what can protect us online?
