SAT 03:00 Jonathan Swift - Gulliver's Travels (b01c6trt)
3 The Voyage to Laputa

The last voyages of Jonathan Swift's story are the lesser told. Gulliver finds himself on the floating Island of Laputa, where he encounters mad scientists and the terrifying ghosts of the great and the good. He flees from these intellectual and spiritual horrors, only to finally find a kind of Eden with the Houyhnhnms, a race of intelligent and gentle horses.

However, in this land, humans - or as they are called, the 'Yahoos' - are considered vermin. The dark and traumatizing experiences Gulliver has in this land change his life (and his wife and family's lives) forever.

With the satire here focused on crazy scientific experimentation, superstition, and finally spiritual desolation - Gulliver's Travels is as modern and potent now as it has ever been.

Jonathan Swift's classic satire starring Arthur Darvill as Gulliver.

Richard Sympson …. Matthew Gravelle
Mary …. Bethan Walker
The Governor of Glubdrubdrib …. Ewan Bailey

Pilot: Kafka Died at 39

A phone, a strudel and Franz Kafka combine to make Jack and Millie's day rather complicated.

Jeremy Front's comedy about an older couple getting to grips with a French daughter-in-law, gassy beer, Eye-Closing Leon and a married lifetime's-worth of verbal sparring.

SAT 05:30 Love in Recovery (m0001tzt)
Series 3

Les McKeown's Autograph

Third series of the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous. Written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery. Stars Rebecca Front, John Hannah, Sue Johnston, Paul Kaye and Johnny Vegas.

Love in Recovery follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics. Johnny Vegas is Andy, the sweet but simple self-appointed group leader. Sue Johnston plays straight talking Julie, who's been known to have the odd relapse here and there - and everywhere. Rebecca Front is the snobby and spiky Fiona, an ex-banker who had it all and then lost the lot. John Hannah is Simon, a snide journalist who’s not an alcoholic – he got caught drink driving, his boss made him attend the meeting, but he fell in love with Fiona and stayed. And, despite her best efforts, she fell in love with him too. Paul Kaye is Danno, a down and out two-bit chancer with a shady past but a lot of heart, who’s desperate to turn his life around.

As we follow their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and, most importantly, tell their stories.

This week, Fiona has been distant and her boyfriend Simon thinks he knows exactly what’s on her mind. He decides to help her, and believes the best way to start is by casually bringing this private issue up in the weekly meeting. What could possibly go wrong?

Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found, as most people do, support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls, all banded together due to one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.

Love in Recovery doesn’t seek to represent an AA meeting exactly as it might happen in real life, but to capture the funny stories, the sad stories, the stories of small victories and of huge milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and most importantly, the many highs and lows in the journey of recovery.

The first of three tales, written and introduced by Lynne Truss.

Death Watch Beetle ...... Bill Paterson
Queen Wasp ...... Alison Steadman

The Death Watch Beetle is a wood-boring beetle. Having spent twelve years as a larva boring through a single rafter in the house with no one to talk to, our beetle is now an adult with about 5 weeks left to live. He has just three aims in life:

Firstly, to find a mate, which he does by banging his head on the timber "Oh Come on girls, .. I know you're out there ... Don't tell me this attic has ever seen such a specimen before. This lovely compact dark brown capsule of hard cuticle covered with yellowish scale-like hair and just under a centimetre long - it could all be yours!

Secondly, to make as much noise as he can.

And finally, to live long enough to see the roof cave in.

The Queen Wasp is very, very bossy, and very, very stressed. She carries the entire responsibility for the wasp colony and its thousands of inhabitants, all of whom are her own progeny. There is an enormous amount of work to be done.

"They call themselves workers, these girls, but quite frankly, none of them knows what real work actually is." It is lonely at the top too," I did consider leaving all this, at one point. None of them knows this; they'd be heartbroken to think I might have left them" and she is just beginning to lose her grip. "Bring me my list" she constantly yells.

Life doesn't get much more stressful than this.

Producer Sarah Blunt.

SUN 10:00 Desert Island Discs Revisited (m000nljf)
Small Screen Stars

Joanna Lumley

From Beethoven to Wham! Actress Joanna Lumley shares her castaway choices with Kirsty Young.

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the actress Joanna Lumley. She first found fame as the high-kicking glamour-puss Purdey in the 1970s show The New Avengers, but the role that cemented her in the nation's psyche was Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous. A striking beauty with a cut-glass accent she had, until then, been cast as a certain sort of sexy toff. Yet in AbFab she stole the show as a shallow, free-loading, alcoholic has-been - famous for her towering chignon and withering one-liners.

Along with displaying a formidable comic talent, it was a role that toyed cleverly with her public persona, hinting at her own beginnings as a model at the precise moment in the 1960s when London really started to swing. As she contemplates being marooned, she abandons the make-up and glamour of her on-screen life and embraces island living - collecting firewood, eating from shells and preparing her evening fire before the moon rises and she chooses the eight tracks that she would like to hear during a single island day.

Producer: Sharon Banoff

Desert Islands Discs was created by Roy Plomley.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2007.

SUN 13:00 Putting You Through, Caller (b098hjv5)
In 1958, the Queen made the first direct trunk telephone call. It was the beginning of the end for the female operators known as the 'Hello Girls'.

Telephone operators had connected callers since the earliest days of the telephone, eighty years before. Despite the intimacy of telephone conversations, subscribers willingly accepted the presence of a third voice on the line.

In this three-hour showcase, Shaun Ley uses drama and comedy from the BBC archives to demonstrate how the telephone operator became a valuable dramatic device. With the aid of GPO's own recordings and the BT archive, Shaun explores the role of the operator, the strict rules governing their work and some official secrets.

by Neil Warhurst, with additional material by Paul Barnhill

Anthony Head leads the team thinking the unthinkable in a top-secret institute. This is Clayton Grange, where brilliantly stupid scientists are as rubbish at life as they are at science.
This week the team launch their revolutionary spray-on clothes, a local MP comes to visit to boost his election campaign and an embarrassing virus escapes from genetics and threatens the very nature of democracy.

Director: Marion Nancarrow

A new series of this popular comedy which began last year. Actor and musician Anthony Head, probably best known for his roles in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and as the Prime Minister in "Little Britain", plays Professor Linden Saunders, the keen but hopeless Director of Scientific Institute, Clayton Grange.

Writer/performers Neil Warhurst and Paul Barnhill first appeared on BBC radio in "Beyond the Pole", a comedy about two incompetent explorers, who returned in "Beyond the Back of Beyond", to trek to the Amazon. Neil turned the first series into the film, "Beyond the Pole", released in 2010, starring Stephen Mangan, Rhys Thomas and Alexander Skarsgard, which won Best Comedy at the International Film Festival. Together, Neil and Paul also wrote and performed in two series of "The Spaceship" (BBC7), starring James Fleet and two series of "Edge Falls" (Radio 4) starring Mark Benton and Sarah Lancashire ("If you boiled down modern Britain, the sticky, foul-smelling residue would be a lot like the Edge Falls" The Guardian). Neil (the only member of his immediate family who isn't a scientist) has also written two afternoon plays for Radio 4. Paul and Neil have recently set up Goofus, a company currently working on plays for theatre, one of which is an adaptation of Neil's radio play "Taking Charlie" and is under commission from Soho Theatre.

Neil and Paul play the parts of Geoff and Roger in Clayton Grange.

House Fly and Soprano Pipistrelle Bat

An annoying House Fly played by Lee Mack and a warm-hearted Soprano Pipistrelle Bat played by Pam Ferris, reveal the truth about life in a draughty old attic in a house in Amersham in the second of three very funny tales, written and introduced by Lynne Truss, with additional sound recordings by Chris Watson.

The House Fly loves life. "The best bit is the buzzing". He loves the aerobatics, dodging the flypapers in the attic and "... my favourite manoeuvre, settling on the ceiling. It is unbelievably brilliant" He loves to buzz. But he also loves, what to humans, is a disgusting way of life. He loves to walk around on filth and to poo everywhere and to spread disease "And listen, we don't mind! Not at all. It's the least we can do". He would love to spread more diseases and takes great joy in telling us just exactly how he does this ... perhaps best not to listen if you're eating!

The Soprano Pipistrelle Bat is a very different creature; a tiny bat with a huge and loving heart. She is nine years old and has given birth to a single pup each year. Her newest pup, Jethro, is her darling; "... such a lovely little face. Chestnut fur. Perfect little ears. He smells like chicken flavour crisps. Ooh, I could eat him." He is six weeks old and weaning - proudly catching insects for himself; and this is always a poignant time for this mother-bat, where pride and sadness mingle. The main concern with Jethro, she finds, is that he can't seem to grasp the idea of torpor, "Oh don't mum. Don't go torpid. It's like you're dying", but as she knows "torpor is nothing to be scared of, .. torpor is your friend".

House Fly ..... Lee Mack
Soprano Pipstrelle Bat ..... Pam Ferris

Written and introduced by Lynne Truss

Major Barbara, written in 1905, is funny, enjoyable and crafty in dividing opinion and it leaves you pondering whether anything has changed over the years. It cleverly splits into two episodes for this Radio 4 production.

At its heart - a simple and intriguing conflict: the struggle between arms manufacturer Andrew Undershaft and his Salvationist daughter Barbara. Can a father win his daughter's heart and mind?

All the best things about George Bernard Shaw are here - the humour, the teasing paradoxical thinking and the sense of life being both absurd and deadly serious. How should people be ruled and how should they be helped? And who is really pulling the strings in the struggle for power - politicians or money?

Series 2

Episode 2

Justin's still living with his father-in-law, still working with his ex-wife and still calling on his Gran for her words of wisdom. This week he also has to cope with trying to get elected as a school governor, trying to find a new job and trying not to miss Justin Jr's school play.

Justin ..... Justin Moorhouse
Gran ..... Anne Reid
Lisa ..... Christine Bottomley
Man in bar ..... Jim Poyser
Bryn ..... Lloyd Langford
Ray ..... Paul Copley
Miles ..... Rob Rouse
Woman in bar ..... Victoria Brazier
Tanya ..... Victoria Elliott

by Justin Moorhouse and Jim Poyser

Producer: Steven Canny

In one version of his life, Justin is a loveable celebrity who is successful, funny, and stopped in the street by adoring fans. He's the man who has everything.

In the more realistic version he's a DJ in a slightly shabby local radio station who gets hassled by the occasional oddball on the street. And he's the man who hopes for everything.

And at home? Well, it's chaotic. His wife has left him, taking custody of his 8-year-old son Justin jnr. So he's back on the market. So he's currently living in his father-in-law's spare room in Bury. The only person who understands him is his Gran, living in luxury in an old folk's home in Warrington. Oh, and his producer Bryn but this might not be such a good thing.

Everyone Quite Likes Justin is written by Justin Moorhouse and Jim Poyser. Justin is a comedian who sells out gigs across the country. He has also written plays and a previous show for Radio 4. Jim Poyser is a writer and producer of enormous experience in both radio and television.

Recorded in front of an audience in Manchester.

WED 07:30 Ability (m0003z8c)
Series 2

Doing a Runner

Matt is 25. He has cerebral palsy and can only speak via an app on his iPad. Everyone who cares about Matt knows that this isn't the defining thing about him. He is funny and clever and "up for stuff" - partly because he is keen to show that there's nothing he can't do, but also because, if he's honest, he's aware that he's less likely than other people to get the blame.

In this second series of the award nominated comedy, Matt is still sharing a flat with his best mate, Jess. He is still in love with her but, much as she likes him, she is still not in love with him. She does however, fancy Matt’s rubbish carer, Bob (Allan Mustafa). Well just a tiny bit anyway. Not that she would ever admit it. After all, Bob is even more lazy and useless at most things than she is.

But Bob is willing. And although domestic duties are not really his forte, he likes Matt and treats him like a real person. And over the last year or so the three of them have been through a lot together - well a lot of drinking and hangovers anyway.

Ability is the semi-autobiographical co-creation of the 2018 Britain’s Got Talent winner, Lee Ridley, otherwise known as Lost Voice Guy. Like his sitcom creation, Lee has cerebral palsy and can only speak via an app. He is - probably - the first stand up comedian to use a communication aid. Prior to BGT, Lee won the BBC New Comedy Award in 2014, has written and performed four full Edinburgh shows and has just completed a major sell out tour of the UK.

Katherine Jakeways, the co-creator and co-writer of Ability, is a multi-award nominated writer. She has written North by Northamptonshire, Guilt Trip and All Those Women for BBC Radio 4 as well as numerous radio plays. She has also written for Crackanory and The Tracey Ullman Show for TV.

The series is set in Newcastle and many of the cast last played together as children in Biker’s Grove.

1. Annie Russell-Maunder, Beryl Burton, Flo Bilton, Jayaben Desai, Sulpicia, Sophia Jex-Blake

History is full of incredible women who did amazing things. And yet, even though their legacy is still felt today, their names aren't on the tip our tongues. We've all heard of Florence Nightingale and Amelia Earhart - but what about Annie Russell Maunder, Jayaben Desai or Josephine Butler? They're much less well known, yet they all made significant and enduring contributions to our world.
The writer and comedian Viv Groskop has been trawling the BBC radio archives to find out about a kickass sisterhood that refused to stay at home when that's what was expected of them.
We meet the pioneering physician, Sophia Jex Blake; the Nobel laureate environmentalist, Wangari Maathai, the social reformer, Caroline Norton; the champion cyclist, Beryl Burton; we take a trip to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home to learn about its founder, Mary Tealby. And many more.
Viv also invites contemporary women to nominate their favourite unsung heroines - so we hear from Clare Balding, Cathy Newman, Samira Ahmed, Natalie Haynes, Gemma Cairney, Angela Barnes and Jessica Fostekew about the females they call phenomenal.
From ancient Rome to the 21st Century, Viv Groskop brings inspiring women out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

As is well-known: Yorkshiremen wear flat caps and Essex girls wear short skirts; Liverpudlians are scallies and Cockneys are wideboys. Northamptonians gaze wistfully at these stereotypes and wish for an identity of any kind and a label less ridiculous than Northamptonians. Northamptonshire, let us be clear, is neither north, nor south nor in the Midlands. It floats somewhere between the three eyeing up the distinctiveness of each enviously. Now Katherine Jakeways is giving Northamptonshire an identity. And she waits, eagerly, for her home-county to thank her. And possibly make her some kind of Mayor.

Joined by nearly all of the incredible cast which graced Series One and Two - including Sheila Hancock as the Narrator, Penelope Wilton, Felicity Montagu, Geoffrey Palmer and Kevin Eldon - and with the exciting addition of Tim Key and Nathaniel Parker - North by Northamptonshire hopes (and promises) to once again delight audience and critics.

'The laughs are cruel, but the monsters of suburbia are curiously sympathetic, and the characters so well drawn and well played that this could run and run.' Time Out.

Frances Crook on Barbara Castle

Prison reformer Frances Crook chooses campaigning Labour politician, Barbara Castle.

She was the reforming transport minister who couldn't drive, the childless woman who changed lives for mothers by paying Child Benefit directly to them, the passionate Labour cabinet minister who didn't become the first female Prime Minister but perhaps paved the way for the Conservative woman who did.

Matthew Parris explores the life of Barbara Castle with his guest Frances Crook, the Chief Executive of the Howard League for Penal Reform, and Roy Hattersley, who worked with Barbara Castle in the 1960s, is their expert witness.

Producer Christine Hall

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2015.

Death & The Maven

When Film Club Leo dies suddenly, Jack and Millie have to make a choice between good behaviour and cheesecake, in this comedy about an older couple trying to grapple with an elusive name, a missing Bette Midler, a rogue knish and a married lifetime's-worth of verbal sparring.

So Millie's son Melvin has given her a new tablet with a voice recorder?

So suddenly Jack and Millie have decided to record everything that happens to them? And for this, we should be grateful?

Well Yes! Because this is a new comedy show written by Jeremy Front (writer of the Charles Paris mysteries for Radio 4) and starring Jeremy Front and Rebecca Front as Jack and Millie Lemman, an older couple who are fully engaged with contemporary life while being at war with the absurdities of the modern world.

FRI 07:30 Love in Recovery (m0001xtf)
Series 3

The Coat

In this second episode, Julie has a bone to pick with Danno, and Andy has finally met a woman – but she’s not all she seems.

Cast:

Simon….. John Hannah
Julie….. Sue Johnston

FRI 23:30 Simon Evans Goes to Market (b045c0j2)
Series 1

Oil

How do you make economics funny? How do you put the comedy in commodity? Simon Evans has the answer in this new series which asks us to get involved in investment.

Rather than being cowed by an apparently complicated and overwhelming system, Simon jumps right in. He takes as his focus four commodities which are so intrinsic to our lives they have an almost elemental significance - land, gold, oil and grain. Yet, despite the fact we encounter them everywhere we look, very few people have been able to build a fortune on them.

All that's about to change as, Simon enlists help from the experts. Each week he will be joined by Tim Harford, Merryn Somerset Webb and a guest specialist as they examine the chequered social and economic histories of these commodities. By looking at four such fundamental products, Simon brings us to a closer understanding of how global economic forces have a far-reaching and often surprising impact on our lives.

In this episode, Simon looks at commodities markets in oil or petrolium. How is it produced? Why is this trade different to others? Is our over-reliance on it dangerous?

Performed by ..... Simon Evans, with regular guests Tim Harford and Merryn Somerset-Webb, and to talk about Oil markets, Paul Horsnell.

Written by ..... Simon Evans with Benjamin Partridge and Andy Wolton

Researcher ..... Matthew Oldham

Producer ..... Tilusha Ghelani

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 2014.
