SAT 01:30 Chant (b04lpzz2)
Richard Coles delves into the 1990's when a recording of Benedictine monks singing became so popular it sold in the millions around the world.

If an album of classical music sold anywhere near one million copies at that time, it was considered unusual. For one to sell more than that was unprecedented. Adding further to this phenomenon was the fact that this was unfamiliar music at the time, Gregorian Chant, performed not by celebrity artists who might attract a large following, but by monks from a remote corner of Northern Spain. EMI marketed this album Canto Gregoriano, or Chant as it was named in Amercia, as a unique antidote to stress.

Richard Coles with former EMI employees Kick Klimbie and Jane McCann, retrace EMI's marketing tactics in the promotion of Canto Gregoriano. Professor Adrian North will also be providing insights throughout the programme into the psychology of marketing, exploring what drives people to buy certain things, and how music can impact upon us physically and emotionally.

Richard Coles also takes a trip to the Isle of Wight, where Gregorian Chant is still an important aspect of life at both St Cecilia's Abbey and Quarr Abbey, and questions whether such music is still capable of having any meaning or impact upon our lives in the twenty-first century.

Producer: Luke Whitlock.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in October 2014.

SAT 02:00 Sylvia Plath - The Bell Jar (b01qkqv0)
Episode 5

Home from New York, Esther faces a summer in the suburbs and finds herself slipping into lethargy and at a loss.

Sylvia Plath's haunting and only novel tells the story of Esther Greenwood, a talented girl with a prestigious internship on a magazine in New York in 1953.

With dreams of becoming a writer and an impressive track record of scholarships and prizes, Esther seems to have it all - and knows she should be 'having the time of her life'. But between the cocktail parties and the piles of manuscripts, unsatisfactory men and the choices ahead, she finds herself spiraling into confusion and depression. As she retreats from the world in despair, she will attempt suicide and find herself in the world of the asylum before finding a way through.

The Bell Jar is both darkly funny and acutely observed, capturing in vivid and witty prose the society Plath inhabited in the 1950s. A modern classic, it's a powerful portrait of a clever young woman with great and varied ambitions, confounded by the hurdles the world puts in her way, as relevant today as when it was written.

Read by Lydia Wilson.

Abridged by Sally Marmion.

SAT 02:45 Book of the Week (b05qt729)
The Story of Alice

Episode 5

Oxford gossip is catching up with Lewis Carroll. And while the ‘real’ Alice begins married life in a grand Georgian country house, he remains an object of fascination at Christ Church.

Where did Alice stop and 'Alice' begin?

Wonderland is part of our cultural heritage – a shortcut for all that is beautiful and confusing; a metaphor used by artists, writers and politicians for 150 years.

But beneath the fairy tale lies the complex history of the author and his subject. The story of Charles Dodgson the quiet academic, and his second self Lewis Carroll – storyteller, innovator and avid collector of child-friends. And also of his dream-child Alice Liddell, and the fictional alter ego that would never let her grow up.

This is their secret history - one of love and loss, of innocence and ambiguity, and of one man's need to make Wonderland his refuge in a rapidly changing world.

Drawing on previously unpublished material, Robert Douglas-Fairhurst traces the creation and influence of the Alice books against a shifting cultural landscape – the birth of photography, changing definitions of childhood and sexuality, and the tensions inherent in the transition between the Victorian and modern worlds.

Read by Simon Russell Beale.

SAT 05:30 The Skewer (m000czy8)
Series 1

Episode 1

A satirical river of sound and a platform for diverse new talent, this is topical satire like you’ve never heard it before. A new open-door comedy for a fresh generation of satirists who don’t write sketches, jokes and one liners, but instead channel their talents into playing around with sound.

Following an award-winning pilot and an award nominated Halloween Brexit special, the "disorentating, dizzying, dazzling" Skewer returns for a full series.

"A freeform assault on the senses.. deeply haunting..an eerily beautiful discombobulating mosaic of spin" - comedy.co.uk

Creator and producer Jon Holmes curates contributions from brand new and diverse talent in a show where the experience is enhanced through headphones, attaching the listener to a late night drip of current events as they melt into the brain, evoking a feeling of drifting off, but with the occasional uncomfortable sleep-twitch.

Sketch-writing has long been the way into radio comedy but, for the new generation of satirists who don’t put pen to paper and instead beaver away on laptops using self-taught skills to toy with the news-scape, The Skewer's guerrilla approach to satire is their new playground.

“If ever there was an audio version of Coldwar Steve, it might well be this! Incredible.”

“Cassette Boy meets Blue Jam. Superb.”

“A whole new genre of radio comedy programme invented right there. Clever, funny and scary all at the same time.”

“Weirdly, hypnotically funny. More please.”

“Pushes the boundaries of satirical radio into the murky depths. The world needs exactly this kind of creative commentary right now. Looking forward to more.”

“With this new show, Jon Holmes asserts his place as king of outsider radio art. Its woozy, punch drunk style operates as a perfect satire of our times. Headphones on and fall down it’s K-hole, friends. Exceptional stuff.” Rufus Hound

SAT 07:30 The Voices of... (b07vq2c2)
Marta Sebestyen

The voice of Marta Sebestyen is closely associated with the folk traditions of Hungary and its neighbouring regions.

Through her work with the band Muzsikas, she helped revive the cultural phenomenon of Tanchaz, dance house, which preserved music and dance traditions and, during the Soviet era, provided a beacon for national identity - perhaps most vividly in the dissenters' song The Unwelcome Guest.

Her mother had studied with the folklorist and composer Zoltan Kodaly and Marta inherited her passion for music and village culture, collecting and recording songs from across the Balkans, some of which have found their way onto the soundtracks of films, such as The English Patient and Only Yesterday.

Marta talks about her relationship to the music of her homeland, its political connotations and the quality of the voices of village singers she's most admired.

SUN 09:00 Why Women Read Fiction (Omnibus) (m000dhmw)
Women far outnumber men as buyers, borrowers and readers of most kinds of fiction. and make up the majority of festival attendees, reading group members and online book bloggers.

In this wide-ranging book, Helen Taylor draws on over 500 interviews and questionnaires to explore what, when and how contemporary women read, and why fiction in particular is so precious to them. She looks at how women readers draw on their fiction reading to tell the stories and mark the milestones in their own lives, pass childhood favourites on to children and grandchildren, and forge and sustain friendships. She hears from women about their childhood memories of learning to read, often taught by women in their family or at school, and about how books have become an indispensable part of their adult lives. Her book analyses the special appeal and changing readership for genres like romance, erotica and crime, and looks in detail at the continuing appeal of lasting classic novels like Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre.

As a male author, Ian McEwan, once said: 'When women stop reading, the novel will be dead.'

Helen Taylor is Emeritus Professor of English at Exeter University, has taught and published widely on women's writing, is a regular chairperson at literary festivals and was the first Director of the Liverpool Literary Festival. Her books include 'Scarlett's Women: Gone With the Wind and its Female Fans', 'Circling Dixie: Contemporary Southern Culture Through a Literary Lens' and 'The Daphne du Maurier Companion'.

The reader, Lucy Briers, has recently appeared in the TV shows Victoria and Gentleman Jack. She played Mary Bennet in the memorable 1995 television adaptation of Pride and Prejudice

SUN 10:10 The Listening Project (b0612rj5)
Sarah and Andy – Doctors are Human Too

Fi Glover introduces a conversation betweeen a doctor and her husband about the strain of dealing with life and death every day. Another in the series that proves it's surprising what you hear when you listen.

The Listening Project is a Radio 4 initiative that offers a snapshot of contemporary Britain in which people across the UK volunteer to have a conversation with someone close to them about a subject they've never discussed intimately before. The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. Series 6

Apologetical

Radiolab explores a sea of sorry-not-sorries - what does it truly mean to make amends? With Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich.

How do you fix a word that’s broken? A word we need when we bump into someone on the street, or break someone’s heart. In our increasingly disconnected secular world, “sorry” has been stretched and twisted, and in some cases weaponised. But it’s also one of the only ways we have to piece together a sense of shared values and beliefs. Through today's sea of sorry-not-sorries, empty apologies, and just straight up non-apologies, we wonder what it looks like to make amends.

Radiolab is a Peabody-award winning show about curiosity. Where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and the human experience.

Hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich investigate a strange world.

From WNYC. First broadcast on public radio in the USA in 2018.

SUN 14:30 Coming Up For Air (Omnibus) (m000dhn0)
Episode 1

An overweight, married, middle-aged insurance salesman surveys his life while reflecting on the country he finds himself living in. George Orwell's novel is read by Tim McInnerny.

Written in 1939, Coming Up For Air was published just before the outbreak of the Second World War and offers premonitions of the impending conflict with images of an idyllic Thames-side Edwardian-era childhood at the same time as taking a rather dim view of capitalism and its effects on the best of rural England.

The reviews were among the best that Orwell had received for a novel. It sold 3,000 copies - a considerable improvement on the response to his previous works.

SUN 20:00 Drama (b065rn7t)
Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell

Starring John Hurt. A dying Soho, seen through the eyes of the notorious columnist of The Spectator - plain-speaking drinker, gambler, wit and raconteur. With frequent, very strong language.

Keith Waterhouse's biographical play of Jeffrey Bernard is a recreation of a time in London when poets, painters, artists and writers (Dylan Thomas, Francis Bacon, Lucien Freud, and Elizabeth Smart) lived alongside the local Low Life of No Knickers Joyce and Sid the Swimmer, inhabiting the clubs and pubs of Dean Street. Jeffrey knew and wrote about all of them.

The play is set very early in the morning at the Coach and Horses pub in Soho, where Jeffrey spent most of his days, when not 'at the Races'. The Coach and Horses was his 'office'. Jeffrey has passed out in the Gents, missed closing time and wakes up to find himself alone in the pub with the door locked. He spends the night re-visiting incidents in Soho past and present, his childhood, gambling, women, racing and drink - fuelled by vodka.

Alongside John Hurt in the lead role, the cast includes Nichola McAuliffe, Jeff Rawle, Amelia Bullmore and Miles Jupp.

Recorded on location in Gerry's Club in Dean Street Soho.

MON 14:00 Sylvia Plath - The Bell Jar (b01qlmls)
Episode 6

In a dark episode, Doctor Gordon tries a shocking treatment and Esther tries to take matters into her own hands.

MON 14:45 The Shepherd's Life (b05r0b35)
Episode 1

Some people's lives are entirely their own creations. James Rebanks's isn't. The first son of a shepherd, who was the first son of a shepherd himself, he and his family have lived and worked in and around the Lake District for generations.

It's a life lived according to the demands of the seasons: sending the sheep to the fells in the summer and making the hay; the autumn fairs where the flocks are replenished; the gruelling toil of winter when the sheep must be kept alive, and the light-headedness that comes with spring, as the lambs are born and the sheep get ready to return to the fells.

Through his eyes, we see that the Lake District is not a playground or a scenic backdrop, it's a working landscape that needs sheep and its farmers to survive.

James Rebanks has a huge following on Twitter (using his moniker: @herdyshepherd1) where you can see photographs detailing day to day life on the farm - including his fine flock of Herdwick sheep and, the latest additions to the workforce, sheepdog Floss's ten puppies.

TUE 06:30 What Would Jesus Eat? (b00rxjgw)
Food writer Stefan Gates investigates what was on the menu at The Last Supper, looking at a new theory that Leonardo Da Vinci thought it was grilled eels and sliced oranges.

The controversial restoration of Leonardo's masterpiece in 1997 has raised the possibility of identifying the food on the table in the painting. Stefan journeys to Milan to find the reasons Leonardo chose to paint what he did. Along the way he uncovers a long tradition of depictions of the Last Supper, giving an insight into the way Christian attitudes to food have changed.

Though Leonardo's version is the most famous, other paintings of the Last Supper have offered unusual answers to the question "what would Jesus eat", including crayfish, roast pork and even guinea pig, all decidedly un-kosher for what is commonly understood to have been a passover meal. Other paintings of the subject like that of Paolo Veronese attracted the attention of the Inquisition for the inclusion of "dwarves and drunkards".

Stefan talks to historians of art and food and visits the Last Supper in Milan to find out more on what the paintings can tell us about our relationship with food and dining.

TUE 07:30 Fags, Mags and Bags (b0bfywgp)
Series 8

The Rubington's Doobrery 9000

The hit series returns for an eighth series with more shop based shenanigans and over the counter philosophy, courtesy of Ramesh Mahju and his trusty sidekick Dave. Written by and starring Donald Mcleary and Sanjeev Kohli.

Set in a Scots-Asian corner shop, the award winning Fags, Mags and Bags sees a return of all the shop regular characters, and some guest appearances along the way, from the likes of Moray Hunter, Lorraine McIntosh & Mina Amwar.

In this episode, Ramesh gets his fiancé Malcolm jealous when it's revealed that the Cash and Carry promotions manager, Helena (played by Lorraine McIntosh), fancies him.

Join the staff of Fags, Mags and Bags in their tireless quest to bring nice-price custard creams and cans of coke with Arabic writing on them to an ungrateful nation. Ramesh Mahju has built it up over the course of over 30 years and is a firmly entrenched, friendly presence in the local area. He is joined by his shop sidekick, Dave.

Then of course there are Ramesh's sons Sanjay and Alok, both surly and not particularly keen on the old school approach to shopkeeping, but natural successors to the business. Ramesh is keen to pass all his worldly wisdom onto them - whether they like it or not!

TUE 14:00 Sylvia Plath - The Bell Jar (b01qm4q2)
Episode 7

A new hospital and a new doctor - finally Esther finds someone who understands and offers hope.

Former CIA directors Porter Goss and Michael Hayden are on board for the Spy Cruise, a seven day trip devoted to issues of national security.

Passengers have paid to hear and mingle with these senior ex-spooks, as well as a range of other former intelligence and military officers. Whilst other passengers on the ship gamble in the casino, play pool games and try their hand at line-dancing, the spy cruisers are locked into a lecture theatre worrying about the state of global security.

Tom Mangold discovers that the cruise is part of an attempt to repair the damaged reputation of the CIA after a string of controversies. Albert ...... William Hootkins
Rosa ...... Eileen Way

Paretsky says of her Warshawski: "I was troubled by the way women were portrayed in (detective fiction) they always seemed either evil or powerless. I thought it was time for a tough, smart, likeable female private investigator".

Kathleen Turner also starred in the same role in the 1991 film 'VI Warshawski'.

FRI 06:30 Marginalia (b046j96g)
When someone takes a pen or pencil and adds a comment, an underlining or a question mark to the pages a book - is it cause for celebration or condemnation? And if the person with pencil in hand happens to be famous, should that colour our view?

These are the questions Simon Armitage - himself a lapsed margin scribbler - wrestles with as he sets off to tell the story of marginalia.

He begins with his own books, tracing his past through the comments he made as a much younger man first embarking on the world of poetry. He sees examples from some who've become regarded as masters of the art, such as William Blake and Samuel Coleridge, and hears how an Elizabethan torturer and a 20th century dictator had a great fondness for marginalia in common.

Simon also heads to an antiquarian book fair, where he stumbles across an early volume of Dylan Thomas poetry, containing the poet's own drunken scrawl which has put the volume's price up to a handsome £8,000. Chiefly though this is a personal meditation for Armitage, bringing him into contact with a younger version of himself and reminding him of the profound power of physical books and the markings placed in them across decades and sometimes centuries.

Producer: Geoff Bird

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 2014.
