SAT 05:45 Miss Bessemer Saves The Train by Roy Apps (m0010wm4)
5. 'Young Man, I Know Precisely What a 'V' Sign Means...!'

Penelope Keith is Madge Bessemer in this 5-part serial inspired by the true story of one woman’s fight to halt the closure of her local railway.

Village Guide Captain Madge Bessemer is not a particular fan of railways. Who needs trains when you’ve got a 1948 Austin Princess to tootle around in? However, when she discovers that, as part of their closure plans, British Rail are going to auction off the line side footpath, which holds precious memories for her, she determines to put a stop to proceedings.

Supported by The Lewes and East Grinstead Railway Fighting Committee - two Girl Guides, two train spotters, one pigswill man and a dog - Madge takes her battle right to the heart of government.

But the Prime Minster has just been humiliated by Colonel Nasser and has no intention of suffering a further humiliation at the hands of a village Girl Guide leader. John Profumo, Under Secretary of State to the Minister of Transport and a rising star in the government, is tasked with seeing that Miss Bessemer’s plans are consigned to the dustbin of history.

All seems lost but, as Madge gains strength from the ghosts of her past, an unlikely idea for a railway of the future takes shape.

Everyone loves a fighter and Madge becomes a national hero, finding herself midwife not just to the birth of the world’s first preserved standard gauge passenger railway – the Bluebell Line – but also to the UK’s multi-million pound heritage railway industry.

The iconic Victorian poem Vitai Lampada by Henry Newbolt is better known to most by its rousing chorus 'play up, play up and play the game!"

However, as Peggy Reynolds unpacks the poem and talks to people who still know it, some surprises emerge.

TUE 10:30 The Actor, The Lodgings, The Kipper And Ma (b0084ht0)
Once upon a time, the theatrical landlady provided a home away from home to actors and stars of Variety who could not afford, or didn’t wish, to stay in hotels while on tour.

Often referred to affectionately as 'Ma', the landladies acquired quite the reputation.

Freezing bedrooms, sheets still damp from the washing line, inedible breakfasts and landladies helping themselves to their guests' provisions were, sadly, not uncommon.

Among the performers recalling the world of the theatrical landlady are:

* Bruce Forsyth
* Jimmy Cricket
* Ted Ray

Plus one of the most famous landladies of them all, Manchester's own Alma McKay.

Presented by Geoffrey Wheeler.

Producer: Libby Cross

The tales are woven together by the character of Clovis, a security guard. She recalls the events of strange days and long nights.

When Conrad de Ropp Snr is given 'gardening leave' from his bank, his time at home coincides with his adopted ten year old son's (Conrad Jnr) school holiday. It's a sobering time, mainly because Conrad Snr had almost forgotten the boy existed. Snr thinks Jnr spends far too much time on his own in the garden. He's occupying himself in the shed, and Snr wonders if the boy has found himself an unhealthy habit. But it's not sexual, it's religious. Jnr has got himself an idol. To anyone else it's just a pet ferret, but to little Conrad it's Sredni Vashtar, a vengeful, merciless god. He loves it. He worships it in secret, and he prays each day it will rid him of Conrad Snr.

Over The Top

What does it mean to be too much, excessive or extra? We're partying in the archives to examine and celebrate extravagance in all its forms as Kit Green takes us Over The Top...

Kit Green has a complicated relationship to being 'Over The Top', they've channelled maximum excess into their beloved character, country music icon Tina C, and written and performed a show about the music hall star Fred Barnes - a man who was excessive to tragic extremes. In this programme Kit asks what being over the top means to them now, in glorious extravagance.

Kit's invited some friends to the party to help them reach maximum excess. They are joined by the king of 90's extravagance, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Professor of the History of Emotions Thomas Dixon drops in to talk extreme joy and extreme sadness. We have an intimate kitchen party chat with Malika Booker on being 'too loud' for poetry, fashion historian Amber Buchart helps us get dressed and fellow performers and hedonists 'Bourgeoius & Maurice' bring us their post-pandemic party show 'Pleasure Seekers'.

Keeping us entertained are a host of fantastically over the top characters from the BBC Archives. Party guests include Quentin Crisp, Edina & Patsy and Jilly Goolden. And of course there's some Eurovision. How much? Too Much? Let's find out...

THU 09:30 Empire of Tea (m001t321)
4. The Tea Wars

As Britain’s demand for tea soared in the late 18th century, an economic problem was emerging. Britain wanted to buy lots of tea from China, but China wasn’t interested in the commodities Britain had to sell. That meant silver was draining out of Britain and into China.

Eventually a solution was found: opium. It was an imperial product Britain could grow in India and sell to China. But the Chinese leadership didn't want the narcotic, and Britain’s desire to offset its tea habit by selling an addictive, hard drug that harmed Chinese people, led to war.

Professor of Chinese history Yangwen Zheng explains how the situation escalated, and the long shadow the conflict casts upon the modern world.

Series 8

Don McLean (A-side)

Don McLean talks about his timeless classic 1971 album, the career defining 'American Pie'.

Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.

Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.

In the A-side, Don McLean chats to John Wilson.

24-year old Don McLean’s debut album was rejected by 72 labels before it was released by Mediarts.

It was only because that label was taken over by United Artists that his follow-up received the promotion it deserved.

His second album contained: a tribute to a 19th-century Dutch painter, which was cited as a personal inspiration by the late rapper Tupac Shakur; a song that was re-recorded 32 years later by George Michael in protest against the Iraq War; and an eight-and-a-half-minute single that in 2017 was designated an “aural treasure… worthy of preservation as part of America’s patrimony.”

Producer: Paul Kobrak

We all worry about the end of the world, as economists and environmentalists speak in apocalyptic terms everyday.

Late-night comedy starring Simon Day and David Soul.

Written Sean Gray - one of the head writers of the BAFTA award-winning The Thick Of It.

In each episode, an unnamed, all-seeing narrator (David Soul) shows us that it is stupid to be worrying, as he looks back at some of the most entertaining apocalypses on parallel Earths.

Each week our case study is a normal bloke called Ian (Simon Day) who manages to accidentally initiate the apocalypse of a different parallel world through a seemingly harmless single act (telling a lie, being lazy, cooking some lambshanks).

A succession of comic vignettes ensue that escalate to the end of a parallel world.

My Favourite Things

"Raindrops on Roses and Whiskers on Kittens".

Guests from around the world share their special memories of The Sound of Music classic 'My Favourite Things'.

Written by Rodgers and Hammerstein in 1959, this deceptively simple song has travelled the globe to comfort and enthral children the world over.

Iranian Astronaut and philanthropist Anousheh Ansari's first encounter with this musical classic was in her native language of Farsi. It's a melody she held dear to her during years of unrest through the Iranian revolution and the war that was to follow. It's also the song that travelled with her as she realised her childhood dream of exploring outer space.

For vocal coach Heather Mair Thomas 'My Favourite Things' evokes memories of a happy Cornish childhood, growing up with her musical family. It has also become a reminder to always look for the good in life - come what may.

Meanwhile Jazz musician David Lieberman takes us on a journey through the 1960's New York club scene to the night where an encounter with John Coltrane's version of 'My Favourite Things' changed his life forever.

Plus Sound of Music fan Emma Poulton-White relives her very special wedding day that was topped off with a 'copper kettle' .

Featuring Tom Santopietro author of 'The Sound of Music Story'.
