SAT 00:00 Charlotte Perkins Gilman - The Yellow Wallpaper (m001r242)
A woman is taken to the country by her doctor husband in order to cure her of an unnamed illness - post-natal depression - after the birth of a child.

Instructed to have total rest and emptiness of mind and avoid stimulating company, the woman sinks into a still-deeper depression.

Alone in the top floor nursery of a rented house, she becomes obsessed with the yellow wallpaper and descends into madness...

Starring Charlotte Emmerson.

A literary masterpiece by one of the most commanding feminists of her time.

SAT 00:45 Get Carter: The Bloody Chamber (b0bktw5y)
The Tiger's Bride

A father loses his daughter to the Beast in a game of cards.

In his ruined palazzo, her new master asks her to disrobe.

When she refuses, he reveals his own true nature - the beast beneath the mask. But she discovers he is far more frightened of her than she is of him.

Another of Angela Carter's iconic collection of fairy stories - dramatised by Olivia Hetreed.

Beauty …. Hannah Genesius
Valet …. Jonathan Tafler
Father …. Ariyon Bakare
Clockwork Doll …. Jasmine Jones

At the time of writing The Bloody Chamber in the late 1970s, Angela Carter was disaffected by both sides of the feminist debate. She re-worked traditional fairy tales from her own unique, literary outsider’s point of view, putting women at the centre of the stories.

With their feisty heroines and orgiastic mash-up of beasts, shape-shifters and ghouls, Carter’s extraordinary tales are the most perfect example of her style, not just for her incomparable prose, but also in the dizzying twists and turns of perception, fantasy and myth.

Controversially influenced by De Sade, she embraced the erotic, explored our deepest and darkest urges, and subverted the roles of hunter and prey, master and mistress so that, instead of male sexuality, it is the female that becomes transgressive and powerful.

SAT 07:30 The Fens: Discovering England's Ancient Depths (Omnibus) (m0006sxc)
The Fens are a distinctive, complex, man-made and little understood landscape.

Francis Pryor has lived in, excavated, farmed, walked and loved the Fens country for more than 40 years - its levels and drains, its soaring churches, its magnificent medieval buildings. Interweaving personal experience and passion, the graft and grime of the dig, and lyrical evocations of place, he offers a unique portrait of a neglected but remarkable area of England.

Dr Pryor counterpoints the history of the Fen landscape and its transformation with the story of his own exploration of it as an archaeologist. He recounts his thrilling Bronze Age discoveries in the early 1970s at Fengate and then, a decade later, at Flag Fen near Peterborough - and what those remarkable finds tell us about our ancient ancestors and the way they lived and farmed the land.

We learn how the waterlogged landscape can be a treasure trove for archaeologists and how archaeology has the power to challenge some common misconceptions. Dr Pryor also turns his attention to the future of this low lying area of Eastern England and the challenges we face in preserving it.

Francis Pryor is one of Britain’s most distinguished living archaeologists, specialising in the study of the Bronze and Iron Ages. He has now retired from full-time field archaeology but still appears on television and writes books as well as being a working sheep farmer.

The Cultural Frontline - Toni Morrison: Power In Prose And Poetry

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and The Cultural Frontline - Toni Morrison: Power in Prose and Poetry.

This is a tribute to the life and work of Toni Morrison - exploring the work of contemporary poets from Puerto Rico and Ukraine.

"As good a storyteller, as captivating, in person as she was on the page" that is how President Obama remembered Toni Morrison, a titan of American literature, who died this week. We remember her life and reflect on the influence of the Nobel Prize-winning author.

The Ukrainian poet Ilya Kaminsky tells us about his extraordinary collection Deaf Republic about a deaf boy being shot in an occupied country. It’s a haunting story which defies categorisation, feeling more like a drama than a poetry collection. And as a Deaf person writing poetry, Ilya explains, it also offers insight into what it feels like to be deaf.

Political change has come to Puerto Rico following recent demonstrations which eventually led to the resignation of Governor Ricardo Rosello.

We hear from the poet Raquel Salas Rivera on how Puerto Rico’s political situation and the continuing aftermath of Hurricane Maria have shaped their poetry.

Nile Rodgers

Grammy-winning composer, musician and producer Nile Rodgers is castaway by Lauren Laverne

With his own band, Chic, Nile has been enticing people on to the dance floor since the mid-1970s with hits like Le Freak and Good Times. With over 200 production credits to his name, he has worked on many highly successful albums from Sister Sledge’s We Are Family to David Bowie’s Let’s Dance and Madonna’s Like a Virgin.

Born in New York City in 1952 to a teenage mother, he spent his early life immersed in his parents’ bohemian, beatnik, and drug-dominated lifestyle. Drugs played a part in Nile's life too from an early age, and he took his first acid trip with Timothy Leary at the age of 15. After learning to play the guitar, he got his musical break touring with the Sesame Street stage show and playing in the house band of Harlem’s Apollo Theatre, where he met bassist Bernard Edwards with whom he developed a productive musical partnership and went on to found Chic.

Following the Disco Sucks movement of the late 1970s, Nile and Bernard turned to production, and sprinkled their magic dust on Sister Sledge and Diana Ross. When Nile and Bernard went their separate ways in the early 1980s, Nile forged ahead on his own, working with, among others, Madonna, Michael Jackson, David Bowie and Duran Duran.

Nile went into rehab in 1994 and has been clean and sober for the past 24 years and has received successful treatment for cancer twice.

He won three Grammys for his 2013 collaboration with the French electronic music duo Daft Punk, and has recently released the first Chic album in 26 years.

SUN 23:00 Andy Hamilton Sort of Remembers (m00074jf)
Series 2

Stupidity

More potentially misremembered anecdotes from Andy Hamilton.

This time, Andy looks at that age-old friend of homo sapiens, Stupidity.

There will be no judgement here, however. This is a one-man manifesto for the celebration of imprudent behaviour.

Over which heavyweight champion of the world has Andy accidentally spilled wine? How do you spot an email scam? And why should you always check the colour of your meat at a holiday camp?

Through comic observations and personal anecdotes, Andy examines how much (or how little) things have changed in the 60ish years he's been on this planet.

Andy was born in Fulham in 1954, read English at Cambridge and then in 1976 began writing comedy for BBC Radio, on programmes like Week Ending and The News Huddlines. In 1990, he and Guy Jenkin created Drop the Dead Donkey for Channel 4.

Andy has spent much of his working life making acute observations about politics and family life.

In 2007, again with Guy Jenkin, he created the massive TV hit, Outnumbered, which celebrated the chaos of life with young children. More recently they created the highly topical Ballot Monkeys for Channel 4, which charted the absurdities of the General Election and then the EU Referendum.

For over 20 years he has been playing the part of Satan in his Radio 4 sitcom, Old Harry's Game. Andy is also a popular panellist on shows such as The News Quiz and Have I Got News For You.

With thanks to Corrie Corfield.

Producer: Richard Morris.

MON 20:00 The Other Side of the Dial (m001r8ng)
Paul Rowley looks back at the first wave of UK commercial radio stations, which began in the autumn of 1973 under legislation introduced by Ted Heath’s Conservative Government.

It signalled the end of the BBC’s radio monopoly going back more than half a century. But it was a difficult birth. The first three months coincided with war in the Middle East, an international oil crisis, with Britain immersed in industrial strife with the three-day week, petrol rationing and power cuts.

The first station LBC came on air on October 8, followed by Capital Radio eight days later. These days they are among the world’s most successful radio brands. But initially the stations struggled with low audiences, little advertising revenue and widespread criticism of their output. But the performance of the fledgling stations outside London which opened the following year such as Radio Clyde (Glasgow), BRMB (Birmingham) and Piccadilly Radio (Manchester) ensured that the project was seen as a success.

Although Harold Wilson’s incoming Labour Government in 1974 was opposed to commercial radio, his administration allowed the first batch of 19 stations to stay on air. It was only in 1980 when Margaret Thatcher was Conservative Prime Minister that the expansion resumed.

Many of the presenters became national names, with a mix of informality and polish, but rooted locally. Commercial stations had an advantage over the BBC by broadcasting on FM when Radio 1 was still on medium wave, most of them becoming market leaders. They also were on air longer, some 24-hours a day.

There are some amusing stories. How Capital’s chairman Richard Attenborough had to offer his paintings to the bank as collateral to keep his station on- air. How Radio Clyde opened with a prayer, and then the mike didn’t work. How Radio City’s most successful presenter was a fictional character. How the first record stuck at Radio Hallam (Sheffield), as did the second. How veteran broadcaster James Whale put a listener on the air out of boredom at Metro Radio (Newcastle) and created a nightly phone-in, pioneering a new format which was copied elsewhere.

Paul Rowley was a BBC Political Correspondent between 1994 and 2021. He was a student journalist in 1973 when commercial radio began, joining the Southport Visiter (correct spelling with the ‘e’) as a reporter the following year. He broadcast on Radio City (Liverpool) in its first week in October 1974 covering non-league football, joining the station full-time in 1977 as a news reporter at the end of his three-year newspaper apprenticeship.

Spoken Like a Woman

In the earliest days of radio, women commented on 'household matters', talked about their garden or their travels - writers Vita Sackville-West and Rebecca West were regulars - and became Children's Hour 'Aunts'; but certainly never read the news. On the other hand, the young BBC employed a number of brilliant young women behind the microphone who shaped the earliest days of programme-making.

But when they finally broke into the male bastion of mainstream broadcasting, largely as a result of the second world war, women's particular affinity with the microphone was quickly recognised, notably on the World Service where the female voice was soon found to be more effective at reaching listeners at the other end of the Empire than that of their male counterparts.

In this programme, Anne Karpf explores, with the help of the sound archive, the way women's voices have shaped the sound of British radio, from Auntie Kathleen of Children's Hour and those formal talks of the early BBC, via the forces' sweethearts like Jean Metcalfe and Marjorie Anderson, to today's topliners like Martha Kearney and Bridget Kendall.

Producer Simon Elmes.

FRI 20:00 Three-sided Football (p03qqn3x)
All over the world people are getting together to play a game that seems quite baffling - a version of football in which three sides take part at the same time on one pitch.

The invention of the Danish artist Asger Jorn, a member of the 1960's Situationist group, the game now has its own monthly league matches in London. Ian McMillan is tempted to become a fan - but can he get his head round it?

Three-sided football was initially a metaphor for a better version of society. Nobody tried playing it for real until the 1990's. Now the game has given rise to the most philosophical, least corporate football league in the UK - and it has staged its first World Cup.

In this action packed programme, Ian McMillan meets some of Britain's best teams, including Philosophy Football FC, the Deptford Three-Sided Football Club, the Strategic Optimists FC, Aesthetico Athletico, the New Cross Irregulars and the London-based Polish side, Hussaria.

From a distance, Ian thinks it looks like a normal kickabout in the park. But when he gets closer and tries to work out what on earth is going on, he discovers a bewildering twist on the beautiful game. Imagine a hexagonal pitch, with three goal-mouths, around which three teams of five players are not deliberately attempting to score, but trying to avoid conceding goals by forming temporary defensive alliances with one or other opposing team.

Producer: Bob Dickinson

A Pennine production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in 2016.

Series 13

Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien

The powerful song, Non, je ne regrette rien was made famous by Edith Piaf.

Written in 1960 by Charles Dumont, in a fit of despair, he gave the music to lyricist Michel Vaucaire, but was surprised by the words he wrote.

Dumont thought the song should be about war or revolution. Vaucaire explained he wanted to give the song to Edith Piaf. She was living in Paris at the time, having recently finished her 'suicide tour' during which she had collapsed.

At that time, Piaf didn't think much of Charles Dumont and tried to cancel their appointment. But on hearing the song, Piaf told Dumont that with this song, she would sing again.

Contributors include:

* Charles Dumont who lives in Paris at the same apartment, with the same piano on which he wrote the song in 1960. He plays the song on the very same piano.

* Lord Lamont, who became associated with the song when asked by a reporter which he regretted most - talking about the 'green shoots of recovery' or allegedly singing in the bath after the withdrawal of Britain from the Exchange Rate Mechanism. Lamont famously replied 'Je ne regrette rien.'

* Christine Bovill, who tours a one-woman show about Piaf's life.

* Carolyn Birke, biographer of Piaf.

Series exploring famous pieces of music and their emotional appeal.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in February 2012.

What comedy sketches would you most want at your side to face the end of the world?

And there are clips from spurious comedy greats such as Mace and Dixon’s “the Fiancée of Frankenstein” sketch; the ultimate Mastermind parody from Jenkin Spleen and Helena Handcart; and the fast-talking lunacy of the Klutz Brothers' classic “A Day at the Proctologists”.

FRI 23:15 Bunk Bed (m0003d9v)
Series 6

Episode 1

Everyone craves a place where their mind and body are not applied to a particular task. The nearest faraway place.

Somewhere for drifting and lighting upon strange thoughts which don't have to be shooed into context, but which can be followed like balloons escaping onto the air. Late at night, in the dark and in a bunk bed, your tired mind can wander.

This is the nearest faraway place for Patrick Marber and Peter Curran.

Here they endeavour to get the heart of things in an entertainingly vague and indirect way. This is not the place for typical male banter.

From under the bed clothes, they play each other music and old bits of BBC Archive. Life, death, work and family are their slightly warped conversational currency.

Peter and Patrick deal with their worst reviews, and surprises found in the belongings of their dead fathers.

Producer: Peter Curran

A Foghorn production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in March 2019.

Series of humorous lectures covering historical figures who shaped their era.

With Melanie Hudson and Martin Hyder.

Producer: Phil Clarke
