Episode 1

Adrian Mole’s diary restarts in 2002.

He is 34, working in a bookshop in Leicester and, despite his strained finances, about to become the proud owner of a trendy loft apartment.

As war looms, Adrian is unwavering in his support for Prime Minister Tony Blair and military action, even though his eldest son Glenn is facing deployment to the Gulf. One day, a young woman comes into the bookshop with an unusual request....

The fifth book in our series of readings from Adrian’s diaries, written by Sue Townsend.

Sue Townsend was born in Leicester in 1946. She left school at 15 and was a single parent with three young children by the age of 23. Like Adrian, she wrote in secret for many years, and acknowledged that they often shared the same views - Adrian "C’est moi," she once said.

First published in 1989, Adrian Mole’s diaries were instant bestsellers and Adrian, the remarkably resilient underdog, quickly became a national treasure.

While recording the experiences of one individual and showcasing Sue's fearless and razor sharp wit, the diaries also illustrate how socio-political matters of the time affected the lives of ordinary people.

A Dream Vision for Our Times

The poet Dajlit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects A Dream Vision of Our Times - an exploration of the poems of Geoffrey Chaucer.

Daljit also shares a favourite, recently published poetry collection and reads a poem from it.

This month's Poetry Extra Book of the Month is: Five Fifty Five by Maura Dooley.

A Dream Vision of Our Times - Writer Henry Eliot explores Geoffrey Chaucer’s surreal Dream Vision poems and their contemporary relevance.

Chaucer, the father of English literature, is best known for his long narrative poem The Canterbury Tales, but his witty and imaginative dream visions are also wild, funny and surprisingly relevant today. Henry Eliot considers three of these medieval poems - The Parliament of Fowls, The Book of the Duchess and The House of Fame - and how they changed the course of English poetry.

They all begin with a narrator falling asleep, before quickly slipping into surreal and fantastical dream worlds, where talking birds debate the nature of true love, eagles fly into space and men grieve in forests. There are desert wildernesses, ice mountains, glass temples, wicker houses and emerald palaces.

Chaucer depicts the cacophonous worlds of rumour, debate, gossip and hearsay, invoking uncanny parallels with today’s world of social media frenzies, celebrity culture, post-truth and fake news. But he also explores the complex and messy nature of psychology, experience and what it means to be human.

A Just Radio production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in 2019.

Voicing Tough Truths

True stories told live in the USA: Catherine Burns introduces stories about telling nothing but the truth, even when it’s hard.

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room,

The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

First heard on PRX in the USA in June 2020.

Soul II Soul (A-Side)

Jazzie B and Caron Wheeler discuss Soul II Soul's 1989 debut album, 'Club Classics Vol 1', which included the global hit 'Back to Life'.

Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.

Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.

In the A-side, Jazzie B and Caron talk to John Wilson.

Soul II Soul is one of the most successful British black groups of all time.

Their ethos of 'a happy face, a thumping bass for a loving race' and the sound of their debut album, released in 1989, defined a time and place in the UK's musical history. Featuring the huge hits 'Back To Life' and 'Keep On Moving' the album took London's multicultural underground club culture into the mainstream and achieved worldwide success. 'Club Classics' mixed the sounds of a burgeoning DJ scene with Jazzie B's distinctly British take on rap and the colossal vocal talents of Caron Wheeler.

In the B-side of the programme, it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions.

TUE 22:00 Janey Godley: The C Bomb (m001ngc2)
3. When I Get Bored, Bad Things Happen

Janey Godley doesn’t know how long she’s got left, so she’s telling ALL the jokes! This is her extraordinary story. Fearless and unflinching, yet life affirming stand-up at its very best.

In this episode Janey tells stories akin to the Wild West, in the East End of Glasgow. She and her family go from the perfectly chaotic life of publicans and private schools, to runaways clutching their possessions in black bin bags.

Since Janey’s comedy career began, she’s exposed, on stage, many painful traumas from her life - from childhood neglect and sexual abuse, to marrying into a gangster family who eventually turned on her, and even the murder of her mother - with a seeming lack of sentimentality and the blackest of humour.

Relentlessly authentic, she's also had to face up to her own mistakes - taking responsibility and apologising both publicly and onstage, as well as sharing the shame of being ‘cancelled’ and the very dark place that took her to.

Then, just months later… the hand grenade of a cancer diagnosis forced her to start fighting for her life.

Now, after finally admitting that after everything she’s been through in life, maybe she's not “fine”, and with a terminal diagnosis, she’s submitted to the ultimate ‘C bomb' for many men and women of her generation - counselling.

And as a result of this insight, she’s more hilarious and compelling onstage than ever.

Janey’s experienced a life of extremes but has come out the other side with rare insight, still able to make light of all its trials and tribulations in her signature dark and uncompromising style.

Recorded live in front of an audience in her hometown, Glasgow.

A Dabster production for BBC Radio 4

WED 22:00 Robin Ince's Reality Tunnel (m001ngwk)
Fossils of the Mind

Series 2 - Episode 1

In the first of his two-part series Robin talks about love, books, and his love of books. He explores how we sometimes find it difficult to express our love and shares stories of the delight he's experienced on his travels. It is also a cautionary tale, warning of the dangers of not sharing praise and admiration before it's too late.

Escaping the confines of The Infinite Monkey Cage, comedian Robin Ince takes us on a journey through his Reality Tunnel in his second two-part stand-up series, recorded specially for Radio 4.

For over 30 years Robin Ince has been discharging fascinating thoughts, unusual knowledge, and infectious excitement into the universe. Over this time, these disparate, dusty specs of information have steadily clumped together and formed into an entity known as the 'Reality Tunnel'.

Previously, Robin's live appearances have only been visible to those astute enough to be tracking his trajectory; those with a keen enough eye to catch a fleeting glimpse of him as he twinkles through their orbit, emitting his ideas, shedding light on the human condition, before vanishing again into the distance. But now, using specialist recording tools and fancy editing, this phenomenon has been captured in high resolution audio for all to hear.

Praise for series 1
- “I was practically in tears of joy and wonder. I found it deeply moving and profoundly comforting”
- “It is a thing of beauty and joy and a thing for me amid an ocean of things that aren't!”
- “it’s good to know I'm not the only one with those 'thoughts'”

Arthur Ashe

Broadcaster Qasa Alom chooses the first African-American tennis player to win the US Open and Wimbledon, Arthur Ashe.

Arthur Ashe was born in Richmond, Virginia, a state in the US that in 1943 was still part of the segregated south. If Arthur wanted to compete with white players, he had to leave for St Louis and then California to play. His story is staggering, and not just his success in a notoriously elitist sport. His mother died when he was six, he had a heart attack when he was 36, and he died of AIDS when he was just 49, contracted from a tainted blood confusion.

Filmmaker and broadcaster Qasa Alom grew up loving Rafa Nadal. Then Ashe's story blew him away.

"In a world where we have so many demonstrative heroes, in sport, in politics, the extrovert who is shouting the loudest often gets heard. There's a really good opportunity here to showcase other ways of being a champion, and Arthur Ashe for me is certainly that person."

The programme contains historic interviews, including Arthur Ashe talking to Anthony Clare for In The Psychiatrists Chair shortly after his first heart attack. It also includes a new interview with Raymond Arsenault, American author of Arthur Ashe: A Life.

THU 22:30 Chortle Student Award Final 2023 (m001npxh)
The Chortle Student Comedian of the Year Award 2023, hosted by Mark Watson, comes to the BBC for the first time. Recorded at London comedy venue Up The Creek.

The award has long been a fixture of the comedy calendar, taking place at the Edinburgh Fringe for the past decade and putting some of the country’s best-loved funny people on the first rung of their ladder to stardom.

Having fought their way through regional heats, this hand-picked crop of the UK’s most promising undergraduate comedians take to the stage in London to do battle. Hannah Yarwood, Alex Knipe, Ivo Pope, Josh Adkins, Muhsin Yesilada, Daniel Petrie, Emmerson Young, Katie Carrig, Riki Msindo and Michael McKensie will each have a short set to show what they can do, with one outstanding performer being crowned 2023’s top student comedian.

But for every competitor, there is also the opportunity to come to the attention of the comedy industry and take a first step towards stardom.

The young hopefuls are hosted by Mark Watson, the long-time compere of the competition and a Radio 4 favourite for many years. He returns to the stage where two series of Mark Watson Talks a Bit About Life were recorded. Tonight’s contestants will aim to follow in his footsteps. But to make an impression in the time available, they’ll have to talk even faster than he does…

FRI 20:00 Rave: The Beat Goes On (b06j5qcx)
In the early 90s, a group of young people thought they’d found an entire new way of living, powered by music, dancing, love, and drugs. Just as the world seemed to be getting more materialistic, they went in the other direction, living without money, usually without homes, with life as one long noisy illegal party.

But can you keep that up? What about when the state tries to crush you? What about when children come along? When the drugs scene turns bad, and when you just get older and more tired? This is the story of a small group of friends that came together in 1990, who called themselves Spiral Tribe.

On the rave scene, they are legendary. Now 25 years on, many of them are still together, still partying across Europe, but now with money and a keen sense of the value of their historic brand. Are they still living the dream, or has the dream changed? Jolyon Jenkins reports.

Back to The Sinister Hand

Why are some people left-handed, whereas the majority are right handed? Rutherford and Fry revisit The Sinister Hand episodes to further investigate handedness in humans and animals. They considered cockatoos, chimpanzees and Hannah's dog, Molly, to discover that humans are unique, with just one in ten of us being left-handed.

They ask if there is an evolutionary reason for just 10% of the human population being southpaws

Hannah talks to primatologist Prof Linda Marchant from Miami University about Neanderthal teeth and termite fishing.

Adam consults handedness expert Prof Chris McManus from University College London. He's been trying to track down the genes responsible for whether we're right or left handed.

And what about left-handed brains or eyes or molecules?

Prof Andrea Sella explains handedness, or chirality, at the molecular scale and why when we consider Thalidomide, something seemingly so trivial can be extremely important.

They also explore the left-handed brain. Some researchers point to a link between left-handedness and impairments like autism or dyslexia. Others claim that lefties are more creative and artistic.

So what's the truth? The team consults Professors Sophie Scott, Chris McManus and Dorothy Bishop to find out.

This episode is an updated version of two earlier broadcast episodes.

FRI 22:00 Alexei Sayle's Strangers on a Train (m001nn8y)
Series 2

London to Blackpool

Comedy icon Alexei Sayle begins his second series for Radio 4 of rail journeys across the country with a trip to the most visited seaside resort in the country - Blackpool.

Alexei’s mission is to break the golden rule of travelling by train and actually talk to his fellow passengers, in a quest for conversations with strangers that will reveal their lives, hopes, dreams and destinations.

Along the way, Alexei holds a finger into the wind of the thoughts and moods of the great British travelling public. There’s humour, sadness and surprise as people reveal what is going on in their lives and, as Alexei passes through familiar towns and cities, he also delves into his own personal stories of a childhood in Liverpool and a long career as a comedian, actor and author.

In the opening programme of this new series, Alexei finds among his fellow travellers, Michael, who is on his way to a major international dance competition at the Winter Gardens Ballroom in Blackpool, with his first ever invitation to be a judge. He also meets friends Julie and Sarah who are out on a trip and determined to have fun, including turning the tables on Alexei and deciding they will interview him - with very surprising results. And, as a lifelong fan of trams, Alexei is thrilled to meet the woman who runs the most famous fleet of trams in the country, which has been carrying holidaymakers along Blackpool's seafront since 1885.

A Ride production for BBC Radio 4
