SAT 10:00 Archive on 4 (b0381jzt)
Ivor Cutler at 90

The deceptively quiet wordsmith was born on 15th January 1923 near the Rangers ground at Ibrox Park in Glasgow.

"I have a harmonium and it's going to explode in two minutes", were the opening words spoken on BBC Radio 1's Andy Kershaw Show in 1980 by a gentle voiced Scotsman called Ivor Cutler.

Championed by everyone from the Beatles to Billy Connolly, Ivor Cutler was a poet, humourist and absurdist whose appearances on BBC radio and TV span over 5 decades. As well as producing a vast body of records, books and plays, Ivor was a notable eccentric, often seen cycling around London in plus fours, handing out homemade stickers and badges to strangers.

To mark what would have been Ivor's 90th birthday in 2013, BBC Radio 4 held a 'party', to celebrate his life and BBC archive in particular, with a full house, with performers, fans, collaborators and even his long-term partner, Phyllis King, introducing their favourite poems, songs and memories of Ivor. Weirdness from the archives, pleasure for fans, and a singular introduction to those encountering him for the very first time.

Highlights include Bramwell and King re-enacting a morse code performance of "The Little Black Buzzer".

Presenter David Bramwell is a writer and musician. He is the founder of the "Catalyst Club"; a place for enthusiasts to speak on any subject close to their heart. Ivor Cutler is a subject close to his, having kept correspondence with him in the 1980's.

Ivor died aged 83 in 2006.

Producer: Sara Jane Hall

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in August 2013.

Spring in 2019 is not the riot of colour it used to be. The honeybee is now officially extinct.

Farmer Sam Clark struggles to raise a crop worth a damn. But man has adapted.

Every spring an army of migrant workers, led by foreman Amra Walczak, descends on Sam's farm to pollinate by hand. It is a laborious process but it works. This spring, however, science offers a new solution, Honeybots, tiny robots that are effectively crawling bees, and Sam's put his farm forward for a trial.

Once released, thousands of Honeybots course through the fields, pollinating the flowers in a fraction of the time it takes Amra and her team.

Their job done they return automatically to their hive chest. They are quick and efficient.

That evening, however, dead birds and mice are found in the fields the Honeybots have worked...

SUN 06:00 Poetry Extra (m001h3wg)
Sonnets for Albert

Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Sonnets for Albert with Anthony Joseph reflecting on fatherhood, in his own work and that of fellow artists.

The poet Anthony Joseph has been writing a new collection that addresses a key relationship in his life. His father was many things - a sharp dresser, an orator, a builder but he was only an intermittent figure in Anthony's childhood. And it is this absence which made him powerfully present in Joseph's imagination.

Anthony reveals some of his writing process and his form of 'calypso sonnet', a politically invested line length that, he says, "enforces a melodic rhythm which reminds me of my father" and favours a decidedly Afro-Caribbean approach.

Anthony explores ideas around fatherhood, masculinity, absence and loss, as he talks to other artists whose art has become a space for interrogating the memory of their father.

We hear from fellow poet Raymond Antrobus, the singer Gregory Porter and the Trinidadian film-maker Mariel Brown.
