SAT 02:30 Malmesbury: the Philosophy Town (b017551k)
Britain's most famous political philosopher Thomas Hobbes was born there, and Malmesbury in Wiltshire wants to become for philosophy what Hay-on-Wye is for books, St. Ives for painting, or Aldeburgh for music.

It is setting out to become the country's special 'Philosophy Town'. The scheme is the brainchild of philosophy and small-town enthusiast Michael Cuthbert, and he has got the backing of Wiltshire Council and the involvement of the local and long-established Thomas Hobbes Society. He has also enthused the head teacher of Malmesbury School, whose students are being encouraged to take philosophy seriously.

Recently Malmesbury has hosted an annual philosophy festival. Initially this focused on Hobbes - and the country's leading experts came to speak - but now its scope is wider.

Mark Whitaker (who has himself published work on Hobbes) reports from the Malmesbury Festival. He interviews leading philosophers who are speaking. These include John Cottingham, Simon Glendinning and Angie Hobbs. Professor Hobbs has been designated a 'Town Philosopher', and she also holds an academic title in the Public Understanding of Philosophy.

The Festival raises questions as to what philosophy is once it escapes from the academy. Whitaker interviews members of the audience and local residents about how they see the link between their town and philosophy. He also explores plans to give philosophy a permanent place in Malmesbury. There is talk of a 'Philosopher's Footpath' from Oxford, of inscriptions of great philosophical sayings on the town's buildings, and of a philosophical bookshop-cum-cafe.

SAT 05:30 The Confessional (m000wc13)
Series 1

The Confession of Phil Wang

Actor, comedian and broadcaster Stephen Mangan presents a comedy chat show about shame and guilt.

Each week Stephen Mangan invites a different eminent guest into his virtual confessional box to make three 'confessions' to him. This is a cue for some remarkable storytelling, and surprising insights as their confessions are put under the microscope.

We’re used to hearing celebrity interviews, where stars are persuaded to show off about their achievements and talk about their proudest moments. Stephen is not interested in that. He doesn’t want to know what his guests are proud of, he wants to know what they’re ashamed of. That’s surely the way to find out what really makes a person tick.Stephen and his guest reflect with empathy and humour on things like: why we get embarrassed, where our shame thresholds should be, and the value of guilt.

Series guests include Marian Keyes, Cariad Lloyd, Joan Bakewell, Suzi Ruffell, Phil Hammond, Alastair Campbell and many more.

This week, award-winning stand-up and sketch comedian, Phil Wang confesses about potty training, supermarket gossip and getting the wrong end of the stick.

Written and presented by Stephen Mangan
With extra material by Nick Doody
Devised with Dave Anderson and produced by Frank Stirling

Don't Panic! It's The Douglas Adams Papers

John Lloyd unearths the private papers of his friend and colleague Douglas Adams, and discovers more about the agonies he went through to write The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

The papers, donated to St John's College, Cambridge University, include note books, ramblings, rants about how hard it is to write, unfinished scenes and passages never included in Douglas Adams' books.

John Lloyd co-wrote the first series of Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, which started on BBC Radio 4 in 1978. He reveals that he and Douglas Adams had been commissioned to write the first novel together, following the success of the radio series, but Douglas decided to "give me the boot" and went on to write the books on his own. The novels have sold something in the region of 14 million copies.

Other contributors include the original producer and now novelist Simon Brett; original cast members Simon Jones, Geoffrey McGivern and Mark Wing-Davey; and Paddy Kingsland of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

John also discusses how unpublished writings by Douglas Adams were used in a further series of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

From Guy Mitchell to the Beatles.

Singer and psychotherapist, Sandie Shaw MBE shares her castaway choices with Kirsty Young.

Sandie loathed the song at the time, but more recently came to terms with it after recording a new version which is, she says, rather forlorn.

Along with the highs have been terrible lows - years that she calls her dark ages, when, without money or creative freedom, she felt hopeless. It was Buddhism that turned her fortunes around and became central to her life.

Now, Sandie says, she can’t believe the journey life has taken her on and she is preparing for a final flourish as a performer.

It’s also a business story – how leisure has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry; a sports story – how games became organised and grew into a global spectacle; and it’s a story of invention – how enthusiastic hobbyist-pioneers often took extraordinary risks that changed the course of sport and fashion.

The sneaker story is characterised by fierce competition and rivalry. We explore how the quest to be number one tore families and friendships apart and divided towns. Above all, this is the story of the people behind the shoes. What you’ll hear is a mix of interviews with many of the key individuals who’ve played their part in that extraordinary story, interlaced with moments of fiction inspired by their testimonies and our research.

Written and presented by Nicholas Smith, with 1Xtra presenter Ace. The drama is written by Al Smith.

SUN 12:00 Poetry Extra (m000wkc1)
Africa's Digital Poets - Breaking the Window with a Poem 2/2

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Africa's Digital Poets - Breaking the Window with a poem part 2/2.

Johannesburg-based performance poet Thabiso Mohare talks to poets in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya who have embraced the digital space to disseminate their work, and looks at how it has served them in continuing a tradition of the poet expressing resistance and representing the conscience of a people.

The role of the court poet or griot was to point out to the powers-that-be that they were messing up. Some of the most vital work being produced and performed now still reflects that role, as poets carve their own path, tackling issues as they see fit, or as part of protest movements such as Fees Must Fall in South Africa.

Thabiso talks to poets who write to agitate, and assesses how much the digital age is influencing the way emerging poets write and perform their work. The phenomenon of certain poems going viral (by Warsan Shire and Suli Breaks for example), and the Def Poetry Jam shows drew several of South Africa's most prominent young performance poets to their chosen craft.

But with the development of digital across Africa, their focus is shifting: they're not just looking to the West any more. Although US influence is strong in spoken word poetry, digital is allowing emerging poets to look instead to their home-grown talent for inspiration, and to foster Pan-African approaches. As well as enabling African narratives, some digital platforms are also affording more chances for people to use their mother tongue to speak to their own communities, which mainstream print publishers have rarely been interested in, or able to support.

Thabiso Mohare ('Afurakan'), a spoken word poet based in Johannesburg, is one of the poets and entrepreneurs spearheading developments in spoken word poetry in South Africa, and exploring the possibilities of what the digital space can offer poets in countries where publishers are pulling back from poetry. Thabiso talks to the digital pioneers who, as part of the broader tech revolution in a mobile-first continent, are offering poets across Africa a new outlet for presenting their work in a digital age.

Series 1

Bob Dylan

Comedian and actor Lenny Henry asks "What's So Great About...?" people, things, institutions and aspects of contemporary life that frequently go unexplored, unchallenged and widely accepted but which he, personally doesn't really buy.

In this episode, he questions the greatness of Bob Dylan.

Lenny - a great fan of Soul music and Rhythm & Blues - gets to grips one recording artist he never really "got". From the time he was a teenager in Dudley in the early 70s he had to listen to his schoolmate Greg Stokes tell him what a "classic" the Dylan album 'Blonde On Blonde' was; and ever since friends have been trying to convince him that "His Bobness", as Lenny describes him, is the one recording artist to whom he should really devote his energies.

It's now make or break time and Lenny assembles a band of musicians and fans to see if they can, once and for all, change his mind.

"Dear oh dear", says Lenny. "That whine! That grating music!"

Poet Laureate Andrew Motion, Kris Kristofferson, Bryan Ferry, Jools Holland and Al Kooper, who played with Dylan on some of his most famous albums in the 1960s, are among the defence team.

It seems they have their work cut out.

But for our five fictional tales, we burrow down amongst Poe’s lesser-known, and often dark, gems.

TUE 11:00 Archive on 4 (b08x2zn8)
Apocalypse Nigh

In 2017 the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists set its Doomsday Clock at two minutes to midnight, their judgement that humanity had moved closer to its own destruction. It's a theme embraced in popular culture, from the surprise-bestseller, The Ladybird Book of the Zombie Apocalypse to armageddon-chic on the catwalk.

However while politics, pollution and the very real threat of terrorism may indeed have made our world less stable, science broadcaster Robin Ince considers whether our concern with disaster is also age-old and sometimes imagined. Using the archive he explores our longstanding preoccupation with the apocalypse, from religion and science to comedy and drama, and what it tells us about the way we think.

Drawing on diverse sources from nuclear missile tests to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Orson Wells' infamous radio hoax, Ince discovers how destruction has been portrayed in different ways across the decades, with archive contributions from thinkers including physicist Richard Feynman and philosopher Noam Chomsky.

He hears from contemporary commentators with an interest in the darker side of human thought. Novelist Lionel Shriver and psychotherapist Susie Orbach are among those who explain what the apocalypse means to them.

Ince also searches the archive for practical advice in the event of catastrophe. He meets Professor Lewis Dartnell, a disaster-expert who explains how to reboot civilisation in the event of apocalypse.

The brain - the final frontier. Radio 4 is setting out on an exploration of the creative mind.

Gerald Scarfe's drawings have intrigued and alarmed for more than fifty years but where do his ideas come from? Professor Vincent Walsh of the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience has a theory he wants to pursue. Vincent is an expert in the workings of the visual brain; he thinks that two specific areas may be talking to each other in an unexpected way, resulting in recognisable faces being mixed up with recognisable objects, hence Mrs Thatcher as an axe, a handbag, and even a shark.

Now, cartoonist and neuroscientist are going to meet. "I for one would be fascinated to know what's going on in my brain - please pursue this," says Gerald Scarfe.

TUE 18:30 Soul Music (b013f96w)
Series 12

Wichita Lineman

Wichita Lineman, the ultimate country/pop crossover track, is the subject of this week's Soul Music.

David Crary is a lineman from Oklahoma. He describes his job - storm-chasing to mend fallen power-lines; travelling on 'dirt roads, gravel roads, paved roads... up in the farmlands of Illinois and Missouri... down south in the Swamplands... it ain't nothing to swerve in the middle of the road in your bucket-truck to miss an alligator '.

He recalls the first time he heard Wichita Lineman, travelling in the back of his family's Station Wagon, listening to the radio... thinking that being a lineman 'must be a cool job' if someone's written a song about it. Also a part-time musician, David has recorded his own version of the song which sums up his working life... on the road, working long hours, away from his wife and six kids.

Wichita Lineman was written by Jimmy Webb for the Country star Glen Campbell. It tells the story of a lonely lineman in the American midwest, travelling vast distances to mend power and telephone lines.

Released in 1968 it's an enduring classic, crossing the boundary between pop and country. It's been covered many times, but it's Glen Campbell's version which remains the best loved and most played.

Johnny Cash also recorded an extraordinary and very raw version. Peter Lewry, a lifelong Cash fan, describes how this recording came about, towards the end of Cash's career.

Meggean Ward's father was a lineman in Rhode Island... her memories of seeing him in green work trousers, a plaid shirt and black boots, wrapping his cracked hands in bandages every morning before setting off to climb telephone poles are interwoven forever with Wichita Lineman... as a child she always felt the song was written for her father, who else?

Glen Campbell also gave an interview for this programme. Shortly after the interview was recorded, Campbell went public about his diagnosis of Alzheimer's. His contribution to the programme is brief, and includes an acoustic performance of the song. It was a real privilege to record this, appropriately enough, down the line.

Producer: Karen Gregor.

Bridget thought that she'd be able to put her feet up after her last Radio 4 series, she expected it to bomb. Sadly it was a huge success and she's had to bang on about feminism ever since.

But she hasn't managed to single-handedly eradicate sexism so she's made a whole new four-part series about it for Radio 4

This week Bridget tries to find a feminist icon who doesn't want to replace the word 'feminism' with 'bootylicious', discusses how adverts have ruined her sex life, and why twitter is a sexist's natural habitat.

She's assisted in this by the series' token man, Fred MacAulay.

WED 14:30 When Wesley Went to Winchester (b011zm1g)
In 1970, broadcaster Wesley Kerr was awarded a County Bursary to study at the prestigious public school Winchester College. Over forty years later, he opens the gates of memory and attends a special reunion to find out what happened to the other bursary boys and explores the scheme's attempts at 'social engineering.'

From a working class background, Wesley was a black foster child growing up in Hampshire. With the odds against him, he passed the exam and interview and took the opportunity that was presented to him, later becoming BBC's television news' first black reporter and later Royal correspondent. His early success even made the national press - one newspaper headlined 'Coloured Boy Wins place at Public School'. For Wesley and many of these boys, they were parachuted into a new life at one of Britain's top public schools.

The national bursary scheme, initiated by Winston Churchill, MP Rab Butler and Lord Fleming, ran from 1947 to 1974, after a request by Churchill that a quarter of public schools places were to be taken by state school boys and were funded by the local education authority. A number of other schools such as Eton and Rugby also gave bursaries.

At the unique springtime reunion, Wesley meets over thirty former pupils, who include a former judge, the man who's designing the new Routemaster bus and the Bishop of Gibraltar. With stories of strange accents, public school pranks and those who struggled to fit into an alien environment, Wesley hears how the experience gave them new opportunities and shaped their lives.

THU 07:30 John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme (m000wcyr)
Series 9

Episode 4

The ninth series of John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme is very different to the previous eight. It's still written by John Finnemore, "one of our best sketch writers", (The Observer), and performed by him with "a great supporting cast of Margaret Cabourn-Smith, Simon Kane, Lawry Lewin and Carrie Quinlan" (The Telegraph), and there are still sketches and songs. But, with no live studio audience this year, John has taken the opportunity to try something completely new

Every episode in this series of Souvenir Programme is made up of scenes from one person's life, played in reverse order. There's no narrative to the episode; it's still a sketch show, not a sitcom... but the sketches in each episode all happened to one person, played by one member of the cast, over the course of their lifetime.

Episode four is about Vanessa, and starts with a television quiz show in 1990, and ends with a fairytale walk in 1921.

John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme started in 2011 and quickly established itself as "One of the most consistently funny sketch shows for quite some time" (The Guardian), and "One of the funniest and most inventive new radio comedy shows of recent years" (The Daily Mail).

THU 14:30 Folk Song, Art Song (b01gg7dm)
Christopher Maltman is an award-winning opera singer and recitalist. Alongside the lieders, chansons and art songs of his recital repertoire, he loves nothing more than performing folk song settings.

Audiences often respond well, but not all among the folk-singing fraternity are enthusiastic about this genre borrowing. Some contend that folk songs lose much of their impact when refined and beautified for the recital stage.

Christopher talks to folk singer Eliza Carthy and scholars Georgina Boyes and Tim Healey about the uneasy relationship between the two musical worlds.

Is the antagonism musical or to do with very English attitudes to class and accent? And why is it that so many of his opera-singing colleagues from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and further afield, have no such animosity from their respective folk cultures?

Christopher also talks to his regular recital accompanist Julius Drake and senior colleague Sir Thomas Allen about the best way of approaching this music, searching for a performance that is genuine to singer and song alike.

FRI 07:30 The Confessional (m000wjfr)
Series 1

The Confession of Joan Bakewell

Actor, comedian and broadcaster Stephen Mangan presents a comedy chat show about shame and guilt.

Each week Stephen Mangan invites a different eminent guest into his virtual confessional box to make three 'confessions'. This is a cue for some remarkable storytelling, and surprising insights.

We’re used to hearing celebrity interviews where stars are persuaded to show off about their achievements and talk about their proudest moments. Stephen's not interested in that. He doesn’t want to know what his guests are proud of, he wants to know what they’re ashamed of. That’s surely the way to find out what really makes a person tick. Stephen and his guest reflect with empathy and humour on why we get embarrassed, where our shame thresholds should be, and the value of guilt.

This week, legendary broadcaster Joan Bakewell confesses to gaffes in the Big Apple, escapades in Paris and not being outspoken enough.

Other guests in the series include Cariad Lloyd, Dr Phil Hammond, Clarke Peters, Suzi Ruffell, Marian Keyes, Phil Wang, Lucy Porter, Nigel Planer and Alastair Campbell.

FRI 14:30 D-Day Dames (b0457rms)
In spring 1944 American women war correspondents gathered in London in anticipation of the D-Day invasion. Women were not allowed to report from the front line, although that did not stop Martha Gellhorn. She returned to London as her marriage to Ernest Hemingway was ending - he had met his next wife, also a war correspondent, in the Dorchester hotel in London as he waited for the invasion to take place. But it was Gellhorn, who hid on a hospital ship across the channel, who went ashore and wrote a dramatic account of it – she was subsequently disciplined by the authorities as she had no accreditation.

Others women, such as Helen Kirkpatrick witnessed Eisenhower's return from the front as she reported from D-Day headquarters. After D-Day itself, women reporters gradually started going to Normandy, such as Lee Miller, who filed dramatic photo-journalism accounts for British Vogue from a field hospital and then found herself on the frontlines of the siege of St Malo. The women followed the troops across Europe, arriving in Paris for its liberation in August.
It was a key moment in the history of women war correspondents.

Lyse Doucet recounts their stories with archive audio, readings from their articles and letters, interviews with relatives and their biographers. She explains how the work of women war correspondents has changed since then.

FRI 18:30 Off the Page (b00smq83)
Entitlement

When did what we desire become what we feel we deserve ? In an age when foreign holidays have become routine and over 25,000 public sector workers earn £100,000 a year and more, we tackle this mood of relentless entitlement with Heather Brooke, whose tireless use of the Freedom of Information act helped to break the MPs expenses scandal; stand up Simon Evans, whose routine includes a description of his accent as exotic 'and that's because it is educated'; and Naomi Alderman whose first novel Disobedience won the Orange Award for Young Writers and who feels our sense of entitlement should be replaced by a purer feeling of gratitude. The presenter is Dominic Arkwright and the producer is Miles Warde.
