SAT 07:30 The Turtle Dove Pilgrimage (m00035zf)
Folk singer Sam Lee and William Parsons of the British Pilgrimage Trust, lead 11 pilgrims on a journey across Sussex tracing the origins of the iconic folk song ‘The Turtle Dove’.

Over a 100 years ago, composer Ralph Vaughan Williams travelled through Rusper, Sussex, collecting the stories and songs of the locals he encountered. He stopped at the Plough Inn, where he set up his Edwardian recording equipment to capture the songs of the pub’s landlord, whose crackled voice and haunting melodies can still be heard today.

Vaughan Williams transformed one of the humble folk songs, The Turtle Dove, into a choral hit – extracting the song from Sussex and exporting it to the concert halls of London.

This Pilgrimage seeks to return the song to the land from which it was taken.

Moving through woods, churchyards and village halls, the pilgrims sing as they progress toward the Knepp rewilding estate, where they hope to sing The Turtle Dove to the last remaining colony of turtle doves in Sussex.
Along the way, the pilgrims muse on the meaning of pilgrimage in a secular age and the contemporary relevance of this ancient song.

Episode 1

It is the time of The American Civil War and in New England the March family are facing a frugal Christmas without their father. Four young women forging their path into the adult world, tell of the challenges of a woman's life in a male dominated society. Each of them is very different but in all four of the March sisters the 'All-American girl' emerges for the first time. Louisa May Alcott's coming of age story about love, destiny and freedom, in new version dramatised by Rhiannon Tise.

Meg ..... Natasha J Barnes
Jo ..... Julianna Jennings
Beth ..... Bryony Hannah

Mrs Hummel/Mrs Moffat ..... Karen Bartke
Sallie Gardiner ..... Natasha Cowley
Annie Moffat ..... Keziah Joseph
Ned Moffat ..... Luke MacGregor

Produced and Directed by Tracey Neale

As the episodes progress we learn more about each of the sisters. They love and value each other but a couple of them are really feisty and there are lots of funny incidents. All the ups and downs of family life are realistically drawn. There are truly heartbreaking moments during the story too. This new dramatisation by Rhiannon Tise has a pacy, updated and energetic feel to it. Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy each take a turn in telling the story and this focus gives a much stronger voice to each of the sisters. And to give a male dynamic to the piece, Laurie, their neighbour and friend, also takes up the narration at particular moments too.

Louisa May Alcott's Little Women is highly autobiographical, and in Jo's character Alcott portrays a strong-minded and independent woman, determined to control her own destiny in a little town in New England at the height of the American Civil War.

The Dramatist, Rhiannon Tise, has written nine radio plays. Her first won the Richard Imison Award. Her most recent dramatisation work was Georgy Girl for the British New Wave Season. She is currently developing a 3 part drama for television. Rhiannon's East Prussian paternal ancestors arrived in America around the same time Little Women was written so she has a passion for both the novel and America of that time because of her own family history.

SUN 12:00 Poetry Extra (m000ql55)
Stopping By Woods

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's radio poetry archive and selects ‘Stopping By Woods’ by Robert Frost.

The poem 'Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening' was written about nightfall on the shortest day of the year, though it was actually put to paper at dawn on June 21st, 1922 - the longest day. This has always puzzled Kenneth Steven, a poet captivated by Robert Frost's seemingly effortless mastery of rhyme, metre, language and imagery.

Kenneth Steven visits the poet's home in Shaftesbury, Vermont, now a museum. He talks to the curator there, Carole Thompson, and a pair of Frost scholars, Lea Newman and David Sanders, and he walks the very woods that are possibly evoked by the horseman who pauses to watch the snow settle, despite having "promises to keep/And miles to go before I sleep".

He makes a pilgrimage to Frost's final resting place in a New England cemetery - his gravestone covered in glinting pennies left by fellow pilgrims - and he reveals compelling new insights into the origins and impact of the poem which Frost himself considered his "best bid for remembrance".

A Falling Tree production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in December 2011.

Paul Morley was 13 when he first heard the music of David Bowie, played late at night by BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel.

Many years later, Morley would be an artistic advisor for the V&A museum’s acclaimed Bowie exhibition, ‘David Bowie is’.

In this personal account of the life, musical influence and cultural impact of his teenage hero, Morley explores Bowie’s constant reinvention of himself and his music over a period of five extraordinarily innovative decades.

Morley describes how when he first heard Bowie’s music his world ‘suddenly became something else’, and explores Bowie’s childhood and his early attempts to make his name.

Omnibus of five episodes.

Abridged and produced by Sara Davies.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in August 2016.

MON 06:00 The Mind of Mr JG Reeder (b0082gyz)
1, The Poetical Policeman

Mr JG Reeder has the mind of a criminal, using it to uncover the peculiar circumstances surrounding a bank robbery, the death of the night-watchman and the part in the plot played by his beautiful daughter.

This first of four stories provides useful insight into the past of Mr JG Reeder, whose novel methods bring the criminals of 1920s London to justice.

Read by David Horovitch.

Edgar Wallace is best known for his popular detective and suspense stories which earned him the title, "King of the Modern Thriller."

Although created at roughly the same time, Mr JG Reeder is the diametric opposite of Sam Spade, Philip Marlow and Mike Hammer. He is a shabbily dressed, diffident civil servant who prefers a cup of tea and a slice of seed cake to a shot of something stronger.

Reeder is a uniquely English detective. An apparent fuddy-duddy working in some obscure capacity in the Public Prosecutor's office, he actually has a razor-sharp intellect and is a super-sleuth. He solves his mysteries because he fully understands the "criminal mind".

Abridged for radio by Neville Teller.

Producer: Gemma Jenkins

MON 14:00 Believe Me by Eddie Izzard (b08vxt0l)
1. Childhood

When Eddie Izzard was six, she and her brother Mark lost their mother. That day, she lost her childhood too.

From early childhood memories of happy days running with a gang of local kids, doing naughty-ish things in Bangor, County Down, to months of loneliness and isolation at boarding school.

Eddie Izzard has experienced loss in a way that no child should at such a tender age. And this, as well as struggling both with dyslexia and also trying to understand her gender and sexuality issues at a time when they were not openly discussed, leads to a fascinating insight into the early life of one of Britain's most idiosyncratic and cerebral of performers.

Eddie takes us on a journey through her life - one during which she has discovered much about herself along the way, and come to terms with not fitting into the box that most of us like to put people in.

With a nod to the surreal humour and disarming candour of her shows, and some occasional digressions, Believe Me tells the story of a child losing their mother yet who’s risen to become a star of comedy and drama, a leading advocate of total clothing rights, and an extreme runner of marathons.

TUE 14:30 The Bronze Age Man of Jodrell Bank (b043x86j)
Writer, Alan Garner lives in a medieval building on a Bronze Age site, within a mile of the Jodrell Bank radio telescope.

Alan explains how this has inspired his writing for over 50 years. He describes how it gives him a unique sense of place, and a perspective on the passage of time reflected in his book trilogy, and which first propelled him to fame with the children's classic fantasy story, The Weirdstone of Brisingamen in 1957.

Martin Goodman, Professor of Creative Writing at Hull University, visits Jodrell Bank with Garner to find out more about the timeline the author traces from the Bronze Age artifacts found around his home, through to the contemporary exploration of space which the telescope undertakes today. Garner takes inspiration from making these connections and expresses them through his fantasy stories.

Goodman also re-visits the locations which make Garner's books so memorable by heading to Alderley Edge - an outcrop of rock in Cheshire, with dramatic views of the Pennines. The physical features of this landscape, such as stones and hidden places have been given a mythical dimension by Garner, who explains how the Edge has cast a spell over him since his childhood.

WED 07:30 Sandi Toksvig's Hygge (m000qknw)
Episode 4

‘Hygge’ (pronounced hoo-ga) along with ‘tak’ (the word for ‘thank you’ that we learnt from watching Borgen and other Scandi dramas) is one of the few Danish words to have become known to us in the UK.

It’s a word that means comfort, contentment and cherishing the simple pleasures in life. In lifestyle magazines it’s faux fur throws, cups of hot cocoa and scented candles; but to the Danish it has simpler and less commercial roots. As these cold Winter nights draw in after a difficult year of scant comfort, it feels like we all need some hygge and legendary Dane, Sandi Toksvig, will do her best to bring it to you.

Broadcasting from her wooden cabin near a lake deep in the Danish countryside Sandi will explore the concept of "hygge" with Professor Brian Cox who finds comfort in physics, piano playing and mulled wine and comedian Zoe Lyons who would like nothing more than to clear out ditches all day.

Guests for the series are Grayson Perry, Alan Davies, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Bridget Christie, Clive Myrie, Professor Brian Cox, Sindhu Vee, Zoe Lyons and presenters and podcasters Rose and Rosie . We look forward to you joining Sandi in her cabin (there will be mulled wine).

THU 14:30 The Quietest New Year on Earth (b055jy1k)
Black-clad security men stalk the streets hunting down people making noise and silencing them.
No music, no laughter, no engines, no computer games.
Instead maybe a barking dog, a fly buzzing against a window pane, or a mother stifling a child's cry. In the paddy fields the crickets, the frogs and the beetles chirrup on, but the roads are empty, the skies free from vapour trails.
No human noise at all. Just silence.

This is not a scenario from some chilling science-fiction tale, but New Year's Day on the Hindu island of Bali, where Nyepi, as the day is known, is welcomed in by a day of silence - a day to fool the evil spirits into believing that everyone has gone and their work is done.

Of course, in one of the fastest growing property markets in the world, there is pressure for change, as overseas visitors exert more influence, and Muslim influence from the Indonesian mainland increases. But somehow Nyepi still has a powerful hold on the lives and imaginations of the Balinese, as the entire population falls silent for 24 hours – an island population known for one of the noisiest music traditions in the world - gamelan.
It's a tradition that most locals take part in gladly, taking a chance to contemplate the year to come and using the time to meditate - whilst increasingly tourists are drawn to experience this unique atmosphere. Would you prefer a day of contemplating or a hangover to start the New Year?

From the exorcisms the night before, through the day of silence itself, we hear the tensions mount – till the morning after.

Cow

Brett Westwood investigates the peaceful, hefty, cud-chewing beasts which have been by our side for thousands of years. In Natural Histories we find out what Shakespeare made of this special relationship, hear Dinka songs from the intense cattle-based cultures of South Sudan and travel to a Leicestershire dairy where robots do the milking. It's a pastoral scene and a violent one too: the fearsome virility of the bull in the poetry of Lorca, sacred cows prompting vigilante violence in India, and a Greek tyrant who would bake his victims alive in a giant metal bull, its resonance turning their cries to moos. From all this bovine history it's clear that the domestication of the cow has fundamentally changed human society.

FRI 18:00 Wilkie Collins - Mad Monkton (m000qngx)
Has the youngest son Alfred inherited the hereditary madness that’s said to blight the Monkton family?

'I see the figure of a dark-complexioned man, standing up, with his head uncovered. One of his hands, still clutching a pistol, has fallen to his side; the other presses a bloody handkerchief to his mouth. And thus I have seen him ever since the moment of his death.'

Wilkie Collins's classic story adapted for radio by Michael Robson.

Alfred Monkton … John Castle
Piers Fortune … Gary Bond
Ada Elmslie … Sandra Freeman
Damian … Lewis Stringer
Captain Rounce … Geoffrey Matthews

Devised and directed by Derek Hoddinott

First broadcast on the BBC World Service in 1976.

FRI 18:30 Off the Page (b00cqhr5)
Winning Ugly

Dominic Arkwright chairs the lively discussion series.

He is joined by prospective MP Wilfred Emmanuel Jones, writer Susannah Jowitt and former rugby international Brian Moore, who played on the losing side in the World Cup Final in 1991 and remains haunted by the event.

FRI 22:30 The Consultants (b007k32d)
Series 3

Episode 1

Chesney fixes the alphabet, which has a leaky 'e'. Cerebral sketch show with Neil Edmond and Justin Edwards. From December 2004.

FRI 23:00 I've Never Seen Star Wars (b01phhb3)
Series 5

Meera Syal

Guests experience new things and give their verdicts to Marcus Brigstocke. It's always fascinating to discover what the guests think of their new experience, but also to find out why they've waited so long to do it. Poet Benjamin Zephaniah had never seen a Bond movie or had a cup of builder's tea - so he'll be discussing his first Bond experience over tea and scones. Meera Syal had never been to a football match. Percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie had never seen the Olympics Opening Ceremony, despite featuring in it, and she has her first experience of Downton Abbey. Comedian Dave Gorman tries going to a strip club and reads his first Dickens. Perhaps most astonishing of all, actor and comedian Les Dennis swallows his first ever piece of cheese.

Produced by Bill Dare.

FRI 23:30 Andrew Maxwell's Public Enemies (b03gg7rd)
Nationalism

Andrew looks at Nationalists, from a variety of movements, who are easy to demonise. So very, very easy.

But rather than do that - and it really is very easy - Andrew will explore the reasons for joining such organisations and the logical outcomes of their policies.

Andrew Maxwell is one of the UK's most informed and fearless stand ups. In this series of one-off stand up shows, he uses his trademark intelligence and political incisiveness to dig behind the clichés and assumptions about four possible threats to British society: food, the internet, drugs and Nationalism.

Series showcasing a comedian at the top of his abilities tackling difficult and important 'slow news' topics with a depth and perceptiveness that remains outside the remit of mainstream 'topical' comedy.

Written and performed by Andrew Maxwell.

Script edited by Paul Byrne.
Producer: Ed Morrish

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in November 2013.
