Join Icelandic composer and pianist Ólafur Arnalds for another hour-long musical journey that seeks to find that elusive feeling of calm.

In this episode, Ólafur puts his head into the clouds to look for the calm within the storm, with a selection of music inspired by rain, wind and thunder. He shares music from Chopin, Eydís Evensen and Chihei Hatakeyama, and talks about the comforting effect that the sounds of bad weather can have on you when you’re tucked up inside.

Plus the composer Arooj Aftab transports us to her Safe Haven, the place where she feels the most calm, with a recording from a thunderstorm outside her apartment in New York.

Building a Library: Roger Parker chooses his favourite recording of Mozart Symphony No. 35 in D major ('Haffner'), K. 385.

In July 1782, Leopold Mozart wrote to his son. He wanted a symphony for Salzburg family friend Sigismund Haffner to celebrate the ennoblement of his son, Sigismund Jnr. In a famous letter Mozart replied from Vienna "I am up to my eyes in work... And now you ask me to write a new symphony! I must just spend the night over it, for that is the only way... I shall work as fast as possible and, as far as haste permits, I shall turn out good work."

When Leopold returned the score and parts from Salzburg ahead of the symphony's first public performance, in Vienna the following year, Mozart wrote back "My new Haffner symphony has positively amazed me... I had forgotten every single note of it. It must surely produce a good effect." And, with a tweak to the orchestration and some judicious pruning, it surely did. The celebratory music, with its exuberant outer movements, was an instant hit with the Viennese public and, unusually, even the Emperor stayed until the end of the concert.

Presenter Sara Mohr-Pietsch speaks to one of the most treasured and celebrated British mezzo-sopranos, Dame Janet Baker. Following the recent celebrations of her 90th birthday, she reflects on her life in music, the physical and mental toll of performance, and a singer’s responsibility to always serve both the composer and the musical score.

Serving the score of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!, the much-lauded conductor John Wilson joins Sara to discuss his sumptuous new album - the first ever complete recording of the musical’s original Broadway manuscript. He explains the painstaking research behind the restoration of Robert Russell Bennett’s original orchestrations, how he approaches the task of preparing repertoire for the stage, and how to create the magical sound of musical theatre during its ‘golden age’ in the 1940s.

Recently returned from filming concerts performed for soldiers fighting on the frontline, the BBC correspondent Mark Urban tells Music Matters about the current situation inside Ukraine. Sara speaks to composer and performer Ihor Zavhorodnii, and violinist Vera Lytovschenko, about their efforts to bring musical relief to residents in schools, hospitals and bomb shelters, and hears how they’re trying to reach and serve audiences inside their war-torn country. She hears, too, from the Chief Music Editor of Ukrainian Public Radio’s cultural station, Oleksandr Piriyev, who describes how he’s promoting Ukrainian music through the European Broadcasting Union.

Verdi's Don Carlo from the Royal Opera House, London, starring soprano Lise Davidsen, tenor Brian Jagde and bass John Relyea, conducted by Bertrand de Billy.

Don Carlos, the Infante of Spain, falls in love with his betrothed, Elizabeth of Valois, but last-minute diplomatic considerations mean she has to marry his father Philip II instead. This sets in motion a historical melodrama in which the themes of love, loyalty, jealousy and betrayal are entwined with the fight to free the Netherlands from Spanish rule. In the character of the tortured and lonely Philip II we have one of Verdi's greatest bass roles; and in his confrontation with the Grand Inquisitor the power struggle between church and state is depicted with chilling menace. Verdi returned to the opera at various stages of his career, and while it doesn't have the formal perfection of his later operas like Otello and Falstaff, it contains some of his most thrilling and passionate music.

Our cast of players includes Susana Santos Silva and Fred Frith, who come together in a processional, synergetic duo of trumpet and electronic guitar as they "lay demons to rest." Together, they create a brooding spiral of free ferocity that bursts into ecstatic runs and cathartic solos. A deceptively impish charm dances on the surface of Hel Mel, the collaboration between Vinny Golia, Patrick Shiroishi, Catherine Sikora, Nick Skrowaczewski, Andrew Wedman and Stanley Jason Zappa. This supergroup - featuring four saxophonists - propulsively shifts between riotous vitality and implosive swinging, loose blues. Elsewhere in the programme, sound designer and field recordist AHA references Middle Eastern and Western styles through a hazy vortex of stirring strings, tectonic bowed bass and gritty atmospheric textures.

Rhiannon Giddens

Rhiannon Giddens has won two Grammy awards for her folk music albums, and a Pulitzer Prize for her opera, Omar, proving that she’s a musician who can’t be quickly categorised.

She grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, and as a singer, fiddle and banjo player, she’s been fired by a desire to chart and reclaim the stories of people whose contributions to American music have been overlooked or erased. Her musical journey originally had a rather different destination: she trained as a classical soprano at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio.

Now she draws on all these musical traditions as a composer for ballet, opera and film. She also finds time for acting – appearing in the TV series Nashville about the tangled lives of country music stars – she presents podcasts and has even written children’s books.

Her music choices include Bach, Dvorak, Duke Ellington and Stephen Sondheim.

For the season’s first Radio 3 lunchtime concert, a leading British exponent of Beethoven, Paul Lewis, joins the Norwegian Vertavo Quartet and bassist Tim Gibbs for an unusual performance of the Fourth Piano Concerto, in an arrangement by the German composer Vinzenz Lachner (1811-93) – a conservative musician who struck up a friendship with Brahms.

Forever Blue

Derek Jarman’s final film Blue premiered at the Venice Biennale and shortly afterwards was broadcast in a pioneering simulcast on BBC Radio 3 and Channel 4 in September 1993.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary, actors Tilda Swinton and John Quentin, composer Simon Fisher Turner, and producer James Mackay tell the story of the development and making of this experimental film which had no images. Simply put, it was an Yves Klein International Blue background from start to finish, accompanied by music, narrators and sound fx.

At the BFI National Archive, curator Simon McCallum finds clues about Jarman’s process in his 1987 notebook for Blue, a beautifully painted photo album full of his own poetry, jottings, cuttings and found objects. The notebook shows how Blue began as a tribute to conceptual painter Yves Klein and his theory of the void. But over time, the project changed considerably as Jarman’s health deteriorated and he began to go blind.

Recorded with trusted friends and collaborators in early 1993, Blue became Jarman’s personal and profoundly poetic meditation on living and dying with AIDS - during a period of intense homophobia in the UK when HIV/AIDs sufferers were stigmatised and ostracised by the media, the government and society at large. Although Jarman became increasingly angry and politicised, Blue remained largely calm and meditative - a series of vignettes based on his hospital diaries, poetry and mythology linked to the colour blue, and expressions of grief after losing so many friends to the HIV/AIDS crisis.

Jarman always struggled to find finance for his avant-garde, subversive, often controversial films and this was no difference. It was ultimately funded by Channel 4, BBC Radio 3, The Arts Council, Uplink (a Japanese company) and Brian Eno who lent them his studio.

With music by composer Simon FIsher Turner, the soundtrack also included pieces by Miranda Sex Garden, Coil, Vini Reilly, Momus, Brian Eno and Jan Latham Koenig. Sound design was by Marvin Black, and the associate director was David Lewis.

This year, actor Russell Tovey and director Neil Bartlett collaborated on a new stage production called Blue Now, which was performed in four venues across the UK. We hear their thoughts as they prepare backstage at Tate Modern.

Contributors:

Tilda Swinton credits her film career to Jarman. A close friend, she appeared in 9 of his films including Blue and played a key role in the improvised concerts to raise money / awareness for the project.
John Quentin was one of the two main narrators of Blue and also appeared in Jarman’s films Wittgenstein and Edward II.
James Mackay produced many of Jarman’s films including Blue, The Last of England, The Angelic Conversation and The Garden (and Blue). He also takes care of Jarman’s early Super 8 films for the Luma Foundation.
Simon Fisher Turner began as a runner for Jarman in the late 70s and ended up composing music for six of Jarman's films including Blue, and has performed it since in many live concerts - including Blue Now.
Toyah Willcox’s first acting role, aged 19, was in Jarman’s second film, Jubilee, and she went on to also make The Tempest with him.

Pierre is about to realise a career dream and has a new baby with his second wife Sofia. Into this picture of family happiness walks his son, Nicolas, by his first wife, Anne. Nicolas has been struggling with depression, has fallen out with his mum and thinks coming to live with his dad will help him get back on track.

It’s not long before past and present collide, reawakening resentments and painful memories. It’s a play that compels its characters to question whether love is enough to rescue those closest to you.

Laurie Kynaston played the title role of Nicolas to great acclaim in the stage production at the Duke of York's Theatre, London, for which he received the 2019 Evening Standard Award for Best Emerging Talent.

In this episode, Abel explains how the cello can be played in a huge number of different ways to go beyond its limits and sound almost unrecognisable. From Berio and Britten to Ernst Reijseger and Naná Vasconcelos, Abel delves into the power of how the cello speaks to so many cultures around the globe today. With some incredible improvisations Abel demonstrates how he creates so many fascinating percussive sounds on the instrument, influenced by the Brazilian berimbau, South African uhadi and West African djembe. Abel moves from the beauty of Sir John Tavener to the searing electronics of Oliver Coates, ending with his own celebration of the cello's versatility.

Girolamo Frescobaldi established the keyboard style that would dominate Europe in the Baroque era. His life throws a light on the nepotism and patronage at the heart of Italy in the 17th century, and how it created extraordinary music and spectacle.... breaking the bank in the process. The Lucerne Festival Orchestra has been thrilling the music world for the last 20 years. From the start, the ensemble’s magnificent performances of Mahler have been a sensation, with the Third Symphony in particular playing a key role. In 2007, under the direction of its founder Claudio Abbado, the orchestra gave two legendary performances of this mighty work, and the Third’s moving finale was also performed in 2014 during a memorial concert for the late maestro, bringing tears to the eyes of many who attended. Mahler’s Third is thus the ideal symphony to ring in the orchestra’s anniversary — and to launch the 2023 Summer of Paradise. For Mahler here presents a creation story of the world itself coming into being. In the beginning, we encounter inorganic nature, rocks, and mountains. Plants, animals, and, ultimately, humanity, are successively added to the picture. Yet our species is not the pinnacle. For Mahler, the highest form of existence is love, which he translates into music with a stirring, hymn-like theme. “What God tells me” was Mahler’s initial title for this final movement: music as a promise of blessing.

Donald Macleod and his guest Robert Quinney, Director of the Choir of New College, Oxford, explore Frescobaldi's story alongside some of the other great musicians of his time, who fell into his orbit.

Today, Donald and Robert look at Frescobaldi’s life after leaving his hometown, Ferrara. Initially arriving in Rome, he was soon travelling across Europe, trying to make a name for himself.

Explore the worlds of ancient Albion; from the western reaches of Cornwall to the tribes of Essex and across to the wilds of Scotland and Wales. Their stories, footprint and traces have been dug from the ground, pored over by archaeologists and historians, and informed by the accounts of travellers and conquerors who visited the far shores of exotic Britannia for trade or glory. With the arrival of Caesar's armies, nothing would be the same again.

Playwright David Greig describes encountering a ghost of the Maeatae tribe during a starlit run in Scotland's Ochil Hills.

Sara Mohr-Pietsch presents a special edition recorded live in the Great Hall at Dartington in South Devon, marking the 70th anniversary of the Dartington Summer School and Festival.

Featuring live performances from cellist Matthew Barley with music by Anna Meredith, John Metcalfe and Gavin Bryars, as well as improvisations with his friend and collaborator, shakuhachi player Adrian Freedman. We hear recordings by local artists such as Mae Karthauser and Anna Ling, and music by composers connected to the place and to the festival's history, including Thea Musgrave, Benjamin Britten, Delia Derbyshire and Imrat Khan. Plus there's poetry inspired by the river Dart by Alice Oswald and change ringing from the Stoke Gabriel Bellringers, based just a few miles down the river, as the clock strikes midnight.

Olivier Messiaen's Éclairs sur l’Au-delà… at the Salzburg Festival.

Ingo Metzmacher conducts the SWR Symphony Orchestra, Stuttgart in the French master's final completed work. Scored for a vast orchestra, Éclairs is a summary of his musical and spiritual preoccupations. It's imbued with bird song - at one point with twenty five birds singing at once - rapt emotion and sonorous nobility and, as his widow recalled, in this final work, Messiaen attempts ''gradually to understand the Invisible''.

Novelist Jonathan Coe joins book historians Roland Allen, Prof Lesley Smith and Dr Gill Partington and presenter Lisa Mullen. As Radio 3’s Late Junction devotes episodes this September to the cassette tape and the particular sound and way of recording and assembling music which that technology provided, we look at writing. At a time when there’s a lot of chat about AI and chatbots creating writing, what does it mean to write on a page of paper which is then printed and assembled into a book.

Centuries before Caesar's armies set foot on Albion, the Greek explorer Pytheas circumnavigated our island in 320 BC. Writer Mandy Haggith imagines the world and folk of the west coast of Scotland encountered by Pytheas. Whilst the sea itself with its ever-changing yet permanent presence allows us to travel back across the water to the rugged coastline of Assynt where liminal communities dwelled among the brochs.

Girolamo Frescobaldi established the keyboard style that would dominate Europe in the Baroque era. His life throws a light on the nepotism and patronage at the heart of Italy in the 17th century, and how it created extraordinary music and spectacle.... breaking the bank in the process.

Donald Macleod and his guest Robert Quinney, Director of the Choir of New College, Oxford, explore Frescobaldi's story alongside some of the other great musicians of his time, who fell into his orbit.

Today, Donald and Robert look at the last hurrah of the free-spending Barberini pontificate in Rome, as Frescobaldi returns to take on a prestigious musical position there.

The Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony

The Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra present Beethoven's Ninth Symphony - opening concert of 2023 tour.

Following its acclaimed inaugural tour of Europe and the United States in 2022, the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra begins its 2023 tour at Warsaw's Polish National Opera with a concert which culminated in a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony - and a special translation into Ukrainian of Schiller's famous 'Ode to Joy.'
The orchestra includes refugees forced to flee their country for safety, Ukrainian members of European orchestras, and musicians of Ukraine-based ensembles, some of whom have received special permission from the Ukrainian government to serve their nation through their music.
The concert opens with the Overture to Verdi’s La Forza del Destino, an opera haunted by merciless fate. The orchestra is then joined by the Kharkiv-born violinist Valeriy Sokolov, winner of the Study Grant Prize at the International Pablo Sarasate Competition in Pamplona and the Grand Prix of the George Enescu Festival in Bucharest for the Second Violin Concerto by Yevhen Stankovych, one of Ukraine's leading composers. The orchestra is conducted by Canadian-Ukrainian, Keri-Lynn Wilson.

Live from the ‘Contains Strong Language’ Festival in Leeds, Ian McMillan introduces public poets from around the world, including Simon Armitage, Hanan Issa (the National Poet of Wales), Chris Tse (Poet Laureate of New Zealand) and Titilope Sonuga - Nigerian-Canadian poet and former Laureate of Edmonton. Ian will also hear from the winner of the 2023 Laurel Prize - the international award for nature poetry, set up to recognise and encourage the resurgence of environmental writing – one of Simon Armitage’s public projects as Poet Laureate.

Casseptember: A mixtape from Syrian Cassette Archives

Verity Sharp continues our month-long celebration of cassette tape culture with a mixtape from Mark Gergis and Yamen Mekdad, founders of Syrian Cassette Archives. The rise of the cassette medium in Syria transformed the country’s musical landscape, providing a platform for many musicians across the country that had not previously had the ability to record or distribute their work. Syrian Cassette Archives is an initiative to preserve, research and share sounds and stories from Syria’s abundant cassette era, from the 1970s into the 2000s, during a time when much of the country’s recorded repertoire is under threat from the effects of war and displacement.

Beginning with an initial collection of tapes picked up at music shops and kiosks throughout Syria by producer and archivist Mark Gergis, the project has grown in scope and breadth over the years with many more cassettes received from contributors and collaborators. The growing collection features an overview of musical styles from Syriaʼs many communities and neighbours, including live concerts, studio albums, soloists, classical, childrenʼs music and more, with special focus on the regional dabke and shaabi folk-pop music, performed at weddings, parties and festivities.

Plus, we’ll be sharing more cassette memories from Late Junction alumni including the legendary guitarist Dennis Bovell, alongside the usual array of musical happenings from the outer fringes.
