SAT 12:15 Music Feature (b00mly72)
Purcell and Dryden - A Professional Friendship

Alyn Shipton explores Dryden and Purcell's collaboration on the semi-opera King Arthur, a work which is often regarded as the first professional collaboration between librettist and composer. He is joined by Purcell biographer Jonathan Keates, who describes some of the sights, sounds and smell of the world of Restoration theatre. It was a period in which people would come in and out for single acts of an opera, jostle in the stalls and swap seats in boxes, while the privileged would claim seats on the stage.

There is a look at the latest scholarship on the genesis of the opera, with Dryden's biographer, James Wynn, who traces the origins of the collaboration between the two men in the preface to Dioclesian, which was signed by Purcell but written by Dryden. He explains that 17th-century authorship was a bit like the teams of writers on a present-day sitcom.

Alyn also considers the origin of the Knights of the Garter, the redecoration of Windsor Castle and the messy politics of Jacobites supporting the ousted James II versus William III's Orange and Protestant sympathies. This provides the background to such remarkable musical treats as Purcell and Dryden's Chorus of Cold People, the paeon of praise to St George, and the best-known setting in the opera Fairest Isle. With naked sylphs, ancient British battles and a drinking song worthy of the terraces at an England game, Alyn sheds new light on this most fascinating of operas.

SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show (b00ktrk0)
Le Balet Comique de la Royne

Lucie Skeaping explores the origins of classical ballet, which can be found in the lavish 'balet comique de la royne', an ambitious and influential stage entertainment that was given in Paris, on 15 October 1581 in the court of Catherine de Medici, to celebrate the marriage of the Duc de Joyeuse and Mlle de Vaudemont.

It was conceived and directed by Catherine's director of court festivals, Balthasar de Beaujoyeux, who sought to bring together all the art forms - including for the first time, dramatic dance - for a huge allegorical spectacle in the spirit of the ancient Greeks. The verse was by the Sieur de la Chesnaye, the scenery by Patin, and the music by the bass singer Lambert de Beaulieu, Jacques Salmon, and others. Catherine was so pleased with the event that she had all its details meticulously recorded, published and circulated, which is how we have come to know so much about it.

In recent years the Swiss-based group Ensemble Elyma and their director Gabriel Garrido have researched and recorded the music of the entertainment, and it is this recording that is featured in the programme. Lucie looks back on the history of the piece, how it was performed, what it looked like and what it meant.

Proms Literary Festival - Schiller

Rana Mitter is joined by singer-songwriter Billy Bragg, verse playwright Peter Oswald and poet David Constantine to discuss Friedrich Schiller's Ode to Joy, famously set to music by Beethoven in his 9th Symphony which will be performed as part of tonight's Prom.

Both Schiller and Beethoven saw Europe torn apart by war and revolution. Our guests tonight discuss how the optimism of the Ode to Joy, Friedrich Schiller's great work on unity and brotherhood, is tempered by an anxiety about the realities of war. The sentiments of the poem have a continuing universal appeal - it was performed by Leonard Bernstein to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall, has become the anthem of the European Union, and Billy Bragg created a version to be sung by choirs of English schoolchildren.

Rana Mitter and guests explore different versions of the Ode to Joy in a Proms Literary Festival programme recorded in front of an audience at the Royal College of Music.

Producer: Allegra McIlroy.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b00tkm64)
Hisham Matar

Michael Berkeley's guest is the novelist Hisham Matar, who was born in New York to an affluent Libyan family. They moved back to Tripoli when he was three, but six years later his father was accused by the revolutionary government of being a reactionary, and the family was forced to flee to Egypt. While Hisham Matar was studying architecture in London, his father was kidnapped from his home in Cairo and delivered to the Libyan secret service. The last the family heard of him was in 1995, and they have no idea whether he is still alive, held as a political prisoner, or dead.

Hisham Matar's first novel, 'In the Country of Men', was published in 2006, and nominated for that year's Booker Prize. It is a moving account of the political world of male violence under a brutal dictatorship, mirrored in the domestic sphere where women are the chattels of men.

Hisham Matar has chosen a wide range of music for his Private Passions selection, in which various types of Arabic music are interwoven with works by Chopin (his 'Revolutionary' Study Op.10 No.12), Sibelius's Violin Concerto played by Jascha Heifetz, Ligeti ( a piano piece from 'Musica ricercata'), Schubert (the song 'Nacht und Traume), and Bob Dylan (I Shall be Released, sung by Jeff Buckley).

Edington is a small village on the edge of Salisbury Plain boasting a magnificent fourteenth century Priory church. It's there that singers from many of the great cathedral and collegiate choirs in the country come together in the last week of August to take part in a Festival of Music within the Liturgy. The Festival's theme this year is the Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross, and as usual, BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting the Choral Evensong live on Wednesday afternoon and repeated on Sunday. Three groups of singers will take part in this broadcast - a Consort of mixed voices directed by Jeremy Summerly, a Nave choir of men and boys directed by Matthew Martin and the Schola Cantorum, a group singing plainsong directed by Andrew Carwood. The canticles are by Tallis, the anthem is by John Sheppard and the newly commissioned introit to words from the medieval hymn Stabat Mater is from the young composer and conductor Graham Ross, recently appointed director of chapel music at Clare College Cambridge.

SUN 17:00 Discovering Music (b00tkm9n)
Brahms's Violin Concerto

Stephen Johnson explores the Violin Concerto by Brahms, one of the most challenging works in the repertoire. Brahms was clearly inspired by his great friend and violin virtuoso Joseph Joachim, and Brahms sought his advice while he composed this concerto. Stephen Johnson is joined by the violinist Matthew Trusler, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Grant Llewellyn, who illustrate with musical extracts, and the programme concludes with a complete performance of the work.

In between, Martinu's 6th Symphony dances with Czech and Moravian folk melodies and rhythms; there's a detour to the Norwegian fjords for Grieg's Piano Concerto with Lars Vogt; and back to the Moravian Janacek whose gentle Ballad of Blanik was inspired by recent Czech independence and the new nation's legendary guardians.

Rain

Poet and archaeologist Peter Didsbury extols the joys of rain.

In trying to find the genesis of his pluviophilia, he concludes that it wasn't nostalgia for rain sheeted caravan holidays with John Buchan and Fred Astaire for company that sparked his passion.

It's no coincidence that his love of rain blossomed at the same time as his love of poetry. "As it has a habit of doing, poetry drew out of me much that was latently there, helped to elucidate my loves. Arnold and Hopkins, in particular, released me into fertile relationships with landscape and weather which have so far proved inexhaustible."

His pluviophile's bible includes Hopkins, Pepys and Edith Sitwell, and a line from a love poem by ee cummings addressing a mistress's effortless yet powerful fragility : "nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands."

He is fascinated by the idioms and dialectic variations of language used to talk about rain. Not only does it rain cats and dogs, but also stair-rods, cobblers' knives, tractors and wheelbarrows, depending on where you are in the world. In parts of Northern England it can still be 'siling down'. Peter also pays homage to the creators of another favourite word from his lexicon of rain - petrichor: the distinctive scent released when rain falls upon dry ground.

SUN 21:45 Music Feature (b00m8pdk)
The Art of Noises

One hundred years after the founding manifesto of Futurism, Robert Worby examine the least-documented aspect of Italy's most audacious art movement: the Art of Noises.

The most influential futurist musician was Luigi Russolo who argued for a complete reappraisal of classical orchestras to include sounds of the modern world. He designed and built early mechanical synthesisers, or intonarumori, to recreate the sounds of factories, cars and whistles.

Robert travels to Milan, the birthplace of Futurism, to visit reconstructions of the intonarumori - a collection of instruments invented by Russolo - and re-imagine the sounds of the trams and the mighty railway station which inspired them. With all but a few shards of Russolo's music lost or destroyed, why do the Art of Noises continue to resonate for many musicians and artists today?

SUN 22:30 Words and Music (b00tkmdf)
The Afterlife

Sophie Okonedo and Paul Copley read poetry and prose on the theme of the Afterlife, from heaven and hell to paradise and purgatory. Ultimately the question of what lies beyond the grave impacts us all.shall we be reunited with lost loved ones or be able to return to those we've left behind in some ghostly form? Shall we find peace at last, eternal damnation, or worse, oblivion?
Hamlet faces his father's ghost, Wilfred Owen's Strange Meeting tells of an encounter between two dead soldiers, and in Paradise Lost Satan considers the advantages of ruling in Hell. Whilst contemporary novelists Julian Barnes and Alice Seebold place their protagonists in very different versions of Heaven.
With a mixture of accompanying music by John McCabe, Charles Ives, Britten, Liszt, Schumann, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Gluck, Keith Jarrett and Johnny Cash.

PCM 07 - Lars Vogt

BBC PROMS 2010

From the Cadogan Hall, London

Presented by Catherine Bott.

Another chance to hear last Monday's Proms Chamber Music recital with pianist Lars Vogt. The programme begins with Janacek's impressionistic last major piano work, it's 'mistiness' captured in these miniatures by evocative harmonies and constantly shifting perspectives. Schubert's Sonata is by contrast one of his more expansive solo works in which the easy-going tone is interrupted by anguished outbursts, though the mood lightens again for the playful conclusion.

Swedish soprano Nina Stemme sings Berlioz's tender songs of love sought, found and lost with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Orebro, conducted by Thomas Dausgaard. Also in the programme, romantic symphonies by Schumann and a new work by Albert Schnelzer. Eight years before he began his First Symphony in 1841, Schumann began an earlier one. Thomas Dausgaard - who has recorded a complete Schumann cycle with his agile Swedish Chamber Orchestra - opens with its sprightly first movement and ends the Proms' Schumann bicentenary symphony cycle with the biggest and most stirring of the set. Swedish composer Albert Schnelzer pays tribute both to Haydn's playful character and to film director Tim Burton, born in the Californian city of Burbank. Presented by Martin Handley.

Learning to Swim

Taking his children to swimming lessons, Ian Sansom calculates that he has probably spent more time taking them to swimming lessons over the years than he has spent reading to them, playing with them or tending to their maths homework. What does it all mean? Of course it's useful as a means of avoiding drowning. In a very few cases it might result in a satisfying career path. It's an enjoyable leisure activity, and a way of keeping fit. But Ian suspects there's something more to it, and his reflections lead him to speculate on the wider meaning of swimming, on the many instances of significant swims and swimmers in film and literature, and on some of the figures who have swum through the pages of our literary canon. Taking his cue from WH Auden, Ian finds analogies between the act of swimming and the act of poetic organisation, and recognises in other writers and philosophers the impulse to swim as an escape into the imagination.

Sir Clive Gillinson

Sir Clive Gillinson began his musical life as a cellist, holding positions in the Philharmonia Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra. When that orchestra got into financial difficulties in the 1980s he was asked to become Managing Director. He held the position for twenty years, turning around the fortunes of the orchestra and establishing relationships with some of the leading conductors like Michael Tilson Thomas, Mstislav Rostropovich and Sir Colin Davis. He also helped plan some of the most innovative and succesful concert series in London musical life, developed the orchestra's education department and established LSO St Luke's in a previously derelict church. Gillinson was also behind of the launch of the LSO's own CD label.

In 2005 he became Chief Executive and Artistic Director of Carnegie Hall in New York one of the leading concert venues in the world. It actually consists of three halls and presents hundreds of events every year. Clive Gillinson talks to Norman Lebrecht about his life and career, the challenges he's faced in his various orchestral roles and the differences between working in the arts in the UK and America.

Four essays about free thinking figures and places in North-East England whose ideas challenged their times, recorded in front of live audiences at BBC Radio 3's Free Thinking festival of ideas at The Sage Gateshead in 2009.

In the first essay writer and filmmaker Graeme Rigby looks back at the career of T Dan Smith, the Newcastle city boss whose architectural "Brasilia of the North" captured the headlines in the 1960s. Smith's spectacular fall from grace - jailed for corruption in 1974 - has written him out of history. But do the ideas and regional ambitions of this out-of-the-ordinary politician still resonate today?

Fly, Craig Taborn Trio

A second chance to hear performances by pianist Craig Taborn's trio and American super-group Fly, comprising bassist Larry Grenadier, drummer Jeff Ballard and saxophonist Mark Turner.

Ballard and Grenadier are probably best known as members of pianist Brad Mehldau's trio. They met Turner in the 1990s and though they've individually collaborated with the likes of Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and Joshua Redman, they say "Fly needed to happen" such is their shared instinct for expansive, intelligent and emotive improvised music. In the words of Brad Mehldau, "it's music that hits the head and then seeps into the heart".

Taborn has visited the UK frequently as keyboard player of choice for the likes of Tim Berne and Chris Potter, but this concert saw him bring his own acoustic trio to London for the first time. With Thomas Morgan on bass and Gerald Cleaver on drums, he performs a spellbinding set of complex compositions and intricate improvisations.

Johannes Brahms

Werther's Woes...and First Maturity

After the shattering suicide attempt of his mentor Robert Schumann, Brahms didn't publish a new work for nearly six years - a wretched period in the career of music's new hottest property. Yet the flirty attentions of the composer's much-beloved Hamburg Ladies' Choir finally rejuvenated his creative juices in 1859, at the tender age of 26. In this second programme episode, Donald Macleod explores Brahms's renewed creative maturity, beginning with a rare work for 'his ladies' accompanied by harp and horns.

TUE 21:30 Sunday Feature (b00jhny7)
Wheels and Stones

When George Sturt had to take over his father's wheelwright's business in 1884, he realised that his book learning made him ignorant about what he called 'a tangled web of folk knowledge'. Yet in 1923 he published an account of the process of building wooden wheels and making wagons, which he had become fiercely proud especially because he was keenly aware that his trade was slipping away.

Robert Powell reads from George Sturt's "The Wheelwright's Shop". Punctuating Sturt's observations about apprentices, pricing, drunken sawyers, injuries and the threat of machinery, are the stories of a contemporary stonemason Simon Verity, who carves in cathedrals and villas, and Charlotte de Syllas, a jeweller whose work is shown in museums. We also hear from a firm of coach wrights in Kent.

Sturt saw that he would not be able to compete with the motorcar but there are still a few highly skilled masters of traditional crafts working in Britain.

The modern accounts reinforce Sturt's pride in his craft and also highlight the struggles of trying to survive and shine when others are outsourcing, using cheaper materials and looking for commercial success.

The feature travels from Simon Verity's Caithness croft, to Charlotte de Syllas's studio in Dorset to the Crofords carriage sheds in Kent and to Farnham in Surrey, where George Sturt was based.

Narrator: Robert Powell
Producer and Presenter: Judith Kampfner.

Armstrong brought global fame to the Tyne, employing thousands in the manufacture of machinery, ships - and guns. But he also created the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. He epitomised the dynamism of his age and attracted many epithets, from "visionary genius" to "merchant of death".

Johannes Brahms

Singing in the Rain

Everyone knows that Brahms struggled with his First Symphony for years - terrified of failing to live up to the great Beethoven. Much less well-known is that he tore his hair out over the other great genre dominated by his hero - the String Quartet - quite literally wallpapering his bedroom with his failed attempts.

In the third programme of this series Donald Macleod takes us through two movements from Brahms's rarely-performed and oft-maligned First String Quartet, as well as a complete performance of his beautiful and lyrical first Violin Sonata, inspired by thoughts of his great lost love, Clara Schumann, among the falling rain.

The romantic masterwork is the culmination of a concert also featuring E A Housmann's meditations on age, nature and beauty as depicted by George Butterworth; and a selection from America's celebrated modern master of song, Ned Rorem.

Rorem:
Youth, Day, Old Age, and Night
O You Whom I Often and Silently Come
Root Cellar
My Papa's Waltz

Butterworth:
Loveliest of Trees
When I was One and Twenty
Look not in my Eyes
Think no more, Lad
The Lads in their hundreds
Is my Team ploughing?
Bredon Hill
Oh Fair enough are Sky and Plain

The Russian National Orchestra returns to the Proms in this its 20th anniversary year, with conductor Andrey Boreyko. After a dramatic overture by Beethoven, depicting the heroic Roman general Coriolanus, the orchestra focuses on music from its homeland. Rachmaninov is a composer close to the heart of tonight's soloist, Nikolai Lugansky, who performs the radiant and inventive piano variations on Paganini's theme. Tchaikovsky's orchestral suite was initially conceived as a symphony, but he found this form to be more flexible; it ends with a set of flamboyant variations. Presented by Suzy Klein.

BBC PROMS 2010

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London

The Proms welcomes the last of its youth orchestras for this season. The Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra was founded 25 years ago by Claudio Abbado and nowadays chooses from among the world's leading conductors for its tours. Between these symphonies, the leading German baritone Christian Gerhaher sings Mahler's youthful 'Songs of a Wayfarer', telling of a young man's unrequited love.

Johannes Brahms

The Joachim Case

After 20 years of turbulent friendship, the relationship between Brahms and Joseph Joachim finally snapped at the beginning of the 1870s. But for once it wasn't the fault of the infamously rude and argumentative composer.

Donald Macleod explores the story of one of Brahms's most noble actions - his support for Joachim's wife in their tumultuous divorce case. He also introduces complete performances of solo sonatas for violin and cello, as well as a rare love song for alto, viola and piano, sung by Kathleen Ferrier.

Rameau, Canteloube, Matalon, Mussorgsky - Part 1

BBC PROMS 2010

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London

Presented by Louise Fryer

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales' French-born associate conductor, François-Xavier Roth, directs a mainly French-flavoured programme beginning with a brilliant suite by Rameau and a selection of Canteloube's seductive folk song settings. The title of Paris-based Argentinian composer Martin Matalon's new work translates as 'Lines of Flight' and relates to a technique in drawing where added lines produce depth and perspective in a picture. Finally a rarely-heard version of Musorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, orchestrated with characteristic flair and imagination by founder of the Proms, Sir Henry Wood.

Proms Literary Festival - Poetry about Music

Ian McMillan presents a Proms Literary Festival programme recorded in front of an audience at the Royal College of Music, exploring poetry about music.

Poetry and music have been associated from the earliest tradition of oral epic poetry, and music has inspired poets from Shakespeare to Emily Dickinson, for example in her work "Musicians wrestle everywhere"

Tonight's guests, David Harsent and Jo Shapcott, have both been inspired to writer poems about music. David's recent collection includes "Duet" and "Harp Strings" and he has regularly worked with Harrison Birtwistle to write libretti for opera, including The Minotaur. Jo Shapcott poems include "Shapcott's Variations" and she has written lyrics for or had her words set to music by composers such as John McCabe, Detlev Glamert, Errolyn Wallen and John Woolrich.

David Harsent and Jo Shapcott join Ian McMillan to explore how the subject of music itself inspires poets, the difference between writing poetry and writing libretti, and the orchestration of a poem.

In Search of the Gododdin

Poet Gwyneth Lewis explores the origins and meaning of the Gododdin, a sixth-century Welsh poem elegising the slain British warriors who made a last stand against the Saxons in the famous Battle of Catterick.

Fourteen centuries ago an elite band of three hundred warriors set out from Edinburgh and marched south to Catterick in Yorkshire to meet a force of 10,000 Saxons in a bloody pitched battle. At the end of a week of ferocious combat all but three of the 300 lay dead and, with them, the last hope of the Old North - the original Britons - against the Saxon invaders. But the battle left an enduring literary legacy: one of the three survivors, Aneirin, fled back to Edinburgh and composed the Gododdin, an epic poem to commemorate his fallen comrades.

Gwyneth follows the war band from the Edinburgh stronghold where they spent a year feasting and drinking mead to the landscape of northern England where they met their fate. As she travels she discovers new insights into contemporary Britain from a sixth-century poem written in Welsh about a group of warriors from Scotland who fought a battle in Yorkshire.

Prom 64: WF Bach, Arne, Pergolesi

BBC PROMS 2010

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London

Presented by Tom Service

The Early Opera Company and its conductor Christian Curnyn feature three composers born in 1710 who straddled the divide between the baroque and classical styles. Thomas Arne was the leading figure in London in his day, and his symphonies show off the latest trends in taste and refinement. JS Bach's eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann, showed great promise, but had a disappointingly uneven career, although his music forged a new path. Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, a work of great lyrical beauty, is still as popular today as it was in the composer's tragically short lifetime.

Philip Kerr, the best-selling author of the Berlin Noir trilogy joins presenter Anne McElvoy to discuss writing inspired by the city of Berlin.

He argues that Berlin is the "Ur" city of the 20th century: it was the city to which people fled after the Russian Revolution, the permissive, cultural heart of the Weimar Republic and the centre of the Cold War. The influence of Berlin on British writers and artists has been tremendous and there'll be excerpts of writing by Stephen Spender, Christopher Isherwood, John Le Carre and David Bowie.

Their conversation is recorded in front of an audience at the Royal College of Music as part of this year's Proms Literary Festival.

A World Beyond Narnia

Louise Doughty explores the phenomenal growth of the Young Adult Fiction market, which made over £50 million in the UK in 2009, and asks if it is at last coming of age.

Until recently, when girls and boys outgrew the children's sections of bookshops and libraries, they moved on - for better or worse - to adult novels. This is no longer the case. The Young Adult Fiction market made over £50 million in the UK in 2009, an astonishing growth of 89% on the previous year, and while half of this was spent on Stephenie Meyer's extraordinarily succesful Twilight series, the genre does now seem to have reached a critical mass. As well as being a novelist and broadcaster, Louise Doughty is also the mother of a teenage daughter, and for this very contemporary edition of Radio Three's Sunday Feature, she explores the origins and appeal of the genre and asks what it tells us about the lives of teenagers today.

Louise's starting point is her own memory of reading the final book of C.S.Lewis' Narnia series. In The Last Battle, Susan is exiled from Narnia because she no longer believes and because she has become too interested in "lipstick and nylons and invitations..." but if Lewis had no interest in the teen years, there have been, ever since the 1950s, a growing number of writers for whom this readership is highly appealing.

Louise speaks to Richelle Mead, author of the cult Vampire Academy series, to Patrick Ness, Meg Rossoff and William Nicholson, all of them award-winning authors for children and young people, and she visits Crossley Heath School in Halifax to hear from young adults themselves about what reading means to them and about their likes and dislikes when it comes to "A World Beyond Narnia."
