SAT 02:45 Book of the Week (b01ns1k9)
Michael Holroyd - On Wheels, Episode 5

Michael Holroyd confronts an army of automobiles in this charming memoir. Weaving together personal stories and historical anecdote, he traces his relationship with cars through a lifetime of biography.

Learning to drive was no easy matter for Michael. The lessons required military precision when practising how to get in and out of his car correctly. His biographical subjects also had their difficulties: Bernard Shaw drove with reckless gusto when overtaking his eightieth year; Vita Sackville-West's car became a chamber for sudden romantic assignations and getaways; Augustus John and his family careered through vulnerable villages as the poor vehicle, piled high with bohemian friends, stuttered and jerked along in first gear.

Wry, thoughtful and very funny, On Wheels is an elegy to the glamour of the car. Subtle and perceptive, Michael Holroyd finds surprising ways to understand the past and challenge our view of the future.

Episode 5 of 5
In the final episode, Michael Holroyd describes playwright Bernard Shaw's enthusiastic, if cavalier, approach to driving - only thwarted by the outbreak of world war. For Michael Holroyd, however, it was the satnav that did for him.

SAT 05:30 Tony Law: 21st Century Adventurer (b09by2t2)

Fearless adventurer Tony Law leads an intrepid team attempting to recover the Lost Girdle of the Amazons.

Tony Law is a celebrity explorer, in the mould of Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Several years ago, he wrote a book about his adventures which, combined with the proceeds from a handful of specially funded expeditions, has bankrolled his operation ever since. He's a big fan of razzle-dazzle and derring do, a man who wants to be perceived as a hero.

As a young man, Tony discovered the stories surrounding his great-grandfather, Anton Lawless, and his grandfather, Antonio Lawless. The Lawless family were renowned explorers, but Tony's accountant father was ashamed of the family's unorthodox past, changed the family name to Law (no-one wants an accountant called Lawless), moved to Canada and hid the family history from the young Tony.

Tony's discovery of his grandfather's past gave his life a sudden purpose and spurred him on to follow in Anton and Antonio's footsteps. and, if possible, outdo them. Tony both stars in and narrates the show, in which he is joined by a set of adventurers he has employed to help him on his various quests.

The team comprises Martha (Adjoa Andoh), a survival expert; Janet (Nina Wadia), the 40-something Botanist who's just got out of an awful marriage and finally decided to put her Open University Floral Biology degree to good use; Alan (John-Luke Roberts), the group's transport officer and an old-fashioned right-winger who is delighted to have a shot at (what he sees as) rebuilding the British Empire.

Nationalism

Andrew Maxwell is one of the UK's most informed and fearless stand ups. In this series of one-off stand up shows, he uses his trademark intelligence and political incisiveness to dig behind the clich├ęs and assumptions about four possible threats to British society: food, the internet, drugs and Nationalism.

This series will showcase a comedian at the top of his abilities tackling difficult and important 'slow news' topics with a depth and perceptiveness that remains outside the remit of mainstream 'topical' comedy.

In this last edition, Andrew looks at Nationalists, from a variety of movements, who are easy to demonise. So very, very easy. But rather than do that - and it really is very easy - Andrew will explore the reasons for joining such organisations and the logical outcomes of their policies.

Always adept at making shrewd, balanced and very funny political observations, Maxwell was one of the first comics at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival to react to the riots in England and the Arab Spring and evolve his act accordingly to rave reviews and a nomination. He performed his 2012 Edinburgh show That's the Spirit at the Assembly Rooms George Square to sell out audiences and followed this with a run at London's Soho Theatre. He also performed at the Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival last year including a performance at the televised American Dream Gala and at the Udderbelly Festival.

Marina Warner - in the company of leading contemporary writers - looks at the world of contemporary fiction. In each programme, she considers a story and story writing from a different angle.

Marina is the Chair of the Man Booker International Prize 2015 and the series draws on the expertise of this year's International Booker judging panel, the views of the shortlisted writers, as well as other key literary talent.

Marina speaks with writers as diverse as Julian Barnes, Michelle Roberts, Fanny Howe, Marlene van Niekerk, Alain Mabanckou, Lydia Davis, Edwin Frank, Elleke Boehmer, Wen-Chin Ouyang, Daniel Medin, Nadeem Aslam and Laszlo Krasznahorkai.

There are questions around the boundaries between fact and fiction which Marina believes are central to any consideration of storytelling, since readers' pleasure depends so much on trust built up between the storyteller or writer and the audience.

Over ten episodes, there are discussions on the reasons for writing, writers as witnesses and political interaction.

In episode seven, Marina asks, "Is Anyone Responsible?"

Dodd explains how he went from performing with a teenage 'concert party' to a record-breaking run at the London Palladium. His long career was topped at Buckingham Palace when Sir Ken received a knighthood for his services to entertainment and charity.

With archive clips, 'What a Beautiful Day!' features an extended interview with Sir Ken, as well as new interviews with Sir David Jason, Roy Hudd, Jimmy Tarbuck, Judith Chalmers and Sir Ken's scriptwriter John Martin, who's been writing jokes for the comedian for over 25 years. All of them give their own perspective on just what makes Sir Ken Dodd's comedy tick. The tattyfilarious Squire of Knotty Ash shows no signs of stopping just yet...

Producer: Peter McHugh.

Made for BBC Radio 4 Extra and first broadcast in November 2017.

His children, Lilly and Molly, are growing up fast, and his role as their father and mentor is diminishing by the day.

So what can Hal to as he reaches a crossroads in his life? Help is (sort of) at hand in the form of his eager mates - Doug, Fergus and Barry - who regularly meet at their local curry house for mind expanding conversations that sadly never give Hal the core advice he so desperately needs.

Hal is confused even further as he regularly has visions of his long dead and highly macho father, who he's forced to engage in increasingly frustrating conversations.

In this third episode, Hal becomes the latest victim to a series of car crimes that have happened near his home. Not only has his own personal car space been invaded, but his beloved CD collection has been stolen - including Abba, Dolly Parton and The Pet Shop Boys.

How can Hal survive this tragedy?

In the process of trying to cope with this crime, Hal also tries to find the real man in himself - but in attempting to do this, only scares his young daughters and reduces them to tears.

MON 06:30 Mysteries from the Past (b01lhbg8)

Last Thursday a new outdoor production of the medieval York Cycle of Mystery Plays opened in the city starring Ferdinand Kingsley as Jesus, Graeme Hawley as the devil and a community cast and crew of over 500 people.

The revival of these plays first took place as part of the Festival of Britain in 1951 and were staged, like the 2012 production, against the backdrop of the ruined St Mary's Abbey in the Museum Gardens. The York Mystery Plays are the most complete cycle telling stories from the bible in 48 separate plays each one originally performed by one of the city's medieval guilds. Staged on the back of wagons at various locations around the city the plays were performed on Corpus Christi Day from around 1390 until 1575 and took all day to perform. Since 1951 the plays have been staged every three or four years until 2000 when the last full-scale production took place in York Minster directed by the RSC's Gregory Doran.

In Mysteries from the Past the playwright John Godber takes to the medieval streets of York to look back at how these 'modern-day' performances relate to the original ideas behind the plays of communicating bible stories to the illiterate masses. Examining archive material including medieval manuscripts and recordings of the some of the productions he talks to experts in medieval drama and some of the people involved in past productions which have launched the careers of actors Judi Dench, David Bradley and Mary Ure. The productions have not been without controversy - such as casting a women as God or having Hindu actor, Victor Banerjee, playing Christ - guaranteeing publicity for these adventures in major community theatre production.

MON 11:15 Tommies (b08n2dmn)
24 April 1917

Night falls on a race to the Macedonian front, in this story by Jonathan Ruffle.

If they hadn't been too late to save Serbia, there would never have been 160,000 British troops stationed near Salonika, in what is now Northern Greece.

And if it weren't for one deserting Bulgarian soldier, Celestine de Tullio would be on her way home to England today, in widow's weeds.

But the British troops in Salonika have done so much digging in, and so little actual fighting, that they're universally mocked as 'The Gardeners of Salonika'.

So Celestine's need for action can only help them. Can't it?

Meticulously based on unit war diaries and eye-witness accounts, each episode of TOMMIES traces one real day at war, exactly 100 years ago.

And through it all, we'll follow the fortunes of Mickey Bliss and his fellow signallers, from the Lahore Division of the British Indian Army. They are the cogs in an immense machine, one which connects situations across the whole theatre of the war, over four long years.

WED 07:30 Andy Hamilton Sort of Remembers (b09bz16d)
Series 1, The Human Body

Andy Hamilton is a familiar and much-loved voice on Radio 4. Now for the first time on the network, he presents a collection of observations and reminiscences about both his personal life and his 40 years working in comedy.

Over this 4 part series, Andy looks at Childhood, Politics, The Human Body and Animals. Using comic observation and personal anecdotes he will explore each theme, examining how much (or how little) things have changed in the 60ish years he's been on this planet. Each programme will provide 30 minutes of thoughtful, social history, but packed with laughs.

In this episode Andy, a self-confessed hypochondriac, looks at the topic of The Human Body. Memories include: a GP at University with a penchant for boxing, a unfortunate trick Andy's brain used to play on him every Thursday morning and her reveals the only time he ever wished he'd been taller.

Andy was born in Fulham in 1954, read English at Cambridge and then in 1976 began writing comedy for BBC radio, on programmes like Week Ending and The News Huddlines. In 1990, he and Guy Jenkin created Drop the Dead Donkey for Channel 4. Andy has spent much of his working life making acute observations about politics and family life. In 2007, again with Guy Jenkin, he created the massive TV hit, Outnumbered, which celebrated the chaos of life with young children. More recently they created the highly topical Ballot Monkeys and Power Monkeys for Channel 4, which charted the absurdities of the General Election and then the EU Referendum. For over 20 years he has been playing the part of Satan in his R4 sitcom, Old Harry's Game. Andy is also a popular panellist on shows such as The News Quiz and Have I Got News For You.

WED 22:30 Before They Were Famous (b03cnjpq)
Series 2, Episode 1

Even the most successful of writers have, at some point, had to take day jobs to pay the bills.

Ian Leslie presents the second series of this Radio 4 spoof documentary, which sheds light on the often surprising jobs done by the world's best known writers in the days before they were able to make a living from their art.

In a project of literary archaeology, Leslie unearths archive examples of early work by great writers, including Fortune Cookie messages written by Germaine Greer, a political manifesto by the young JK Rowling, and a car manual written by Dan Brown. In newspaper articles, advertising copy, and company correspondence, we get a fascinating glimpse into the embryonic development of our best-loved literary voices.

We may know them today for their novels, plays or poems but, once upon a time, they were just people with a dream - and a rent bill looming at the end of the month.

Series 2, Episode 4

Bridget thought that she'd be able to put her feet up after her last Radio 4 series, she expected it to bomb. Sadly it was a huge success and she's had to bang on about feminism ever since, perform two sell-out runs at the Edinburgh festival and win lots of awards.

But she hasn't managed to single-handedly eradicate sexism so she's made a whole new four-part series about it for Radio 4.

In this final episode, she talks about why she's not grateful Russell Brand has stopped being a sexist, what happens when you wear an end FGM badge on a popular TV show and why politics has a women problem.

She's assisted in this by the series' token man, Fred MacAulay.

The series is written and performed by Bridget Christie and the producers are Alexandra Smith and Alison Vernon Smith.

Darth Vader - well, they can't all be winners. Lemn Sissay returns to BBC Radio 4 with a comic and poetic look at the treatment of children raised in care, orphans and foster children in popular culture, comparing them with reality. Lemn will explore the gap between fiction and reality, based on his own experiences of growing up in care as well as those of some special guests.

No-one, really, believes they are doing evil. His nomination for a life worth celebrating is at first surprising - it's the entirely fictitious Robin Hood. But, he argues in conversation with medievalist Professor Stephen Knight, the myth has a lot to teach us about the way we treat each other. The presenter is Matthew Parris.

Produced by Christine Hall.

FRI 06:30 Walter Kershaw: The UK's First Street Artist? (b01mk8zs)

Years before the super-cool graffiti of Banksy and his ilk, guerrilla art was being pioneered on condemned buildings in Rochdale. Walter Kershaw brightened up bridges, transformed toilets and glorified gable-ends. His work was large scale. Poppies the size of a house and a portrait of Alvin Stardust that covered an old shop (it WAS the 1970s).

Kershaw's art upset local authorities but delighted many locals. Wherever he painted he drew a crowd and soon residents were requesting him to paint their houses. He sought no fee and knew that his work would fade or be bulldozed, but he persisted. There were no slogans, no protests and nothing overtly political. This really was art for art's sake.

Mark Hodkinson, who grew up around Rochdale, meets Walter and takes him back to his old haunts. He meets Walter's accomplices and the art historians who put his work in context. He discovers what makes Walter tick and what he thinks of the current crop of graffiti artists.

Series 21, Mack the Knife

The Brecht/Weill song, 'Mack The Knife' first appeared in 'The Threepenny Opera' in Berlin in 1928. Sung about the criminal MacHeath, the 'play with music' is based on John Gay's 'The Beggar's Opera', who was inspired by the real-life English highwayman, Jack Sheppard.

The song became a hit when performed in 1959 by Bobby Darin. Ella Fitzgerald famously forgot the words when performing live in Berlin in 1960 and her improvised version won a Grammy.

Suzi Quatro talks about how she performed it with her father as a child, playing bongos to accompany him, and Lenny Kaye from the Patti Smith Group recalls how he and Patti did a version of 'Mack The Knife' at their first ever performance together at St Marks Church in New York on 10th February 1971, as it was Brecht's birthday.
Film-maker Malcolm Clark tells the story of the song's first public performer, Kurt Gerron, an actor and director, who took the song into the darkest places of the Third Reich.
