SAT 00:30 Soul Music (b05qgcgv)
Series 20, Hallelujah

Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' took him years to write. It originally had as many as 80 verses. Recorded for his 'Various Positions' album, it was almost ignored when first released in 1984. Only Bob Dylan saw its true worth and would play it live. John Cale eventually recorded a version which was heard by an obscure musician called Jeff Buckley.

The song has been covered by hundreds of artists including Rufus Wainwright, kd lang and Alexandra Burke.

We hear from those whose relationship with the song is deep and profound: singer Brandi Carlisle listened to it over and over again as a troubled teenager; it became a sound-track to James Talerico falling in love and Jim Kullander made a connection with the song after the death of his wife.

SAT 01:00 Paul Temple (b037j7m0)
Paul Temple and the Gregory Affair, Virginia van Cleeve

Part 5 of a new production of a vintage serial from 1946.

From 1938 to 1968, Francis Durbridge's incomparably suave amateur detective Paul Temple and his glamorous wife Steve solved case after baffling case in one of BBC radio's most popular series. Sadly, only half of Temple's adventures survive in the archives.

In 2006 BBC Radio 4 brought one of the lost serials back to life with Crawford Logan and Gerda Stevenson as Paul and Steve. Using the original scripts and incidental music, and recorded using vintage microphones and sound effects, the production of Paul Temple and the Sullivan Mystery aimed to sound as much as possible like the 1947 original might have done if its recording had survived. The serial proved so popular that it was soon followed by three more revivals, Paul Temple and the Madison Mystery, Paul Temple and Steve, and A Case for Paul Temple.

Now, from 1946, it's the turn of Paul Temple and the Gregory Affair, in which Paul and Steve go on the trail of the mysterious and murderous Mr Gregory.

Episode 5: Virginia van Cleeve

A sinister shop in the East End may hold a vital clue.

Producer Patrick Rayner

Francis Durbridge, the creator of Paul Temple, was born in Hull in 1912 and died in 1998. He was one of the most successful novelists, playwrights and scriptwriters of his day.

SAT 01:30 The Ice Mountain (b01g65gs)

This haunting soundscape follows the journey of a fictional iceberg as it travels south into the North Atlantic after calving from a glacier in Greenland. One hundred years ago RMS Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic, and more than 1500 people died as a result of this collision. As a result, the International Ice Patrol (I.C.P.) was formed to monitors the ice conditions near the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and warn mariners of the dangers that icebergs present to safe navigation. Since the formation of the I.C.P. no ship which has heeded their warnings has struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Narrated by Adjoa Andoh and with sound recordings by Chris Watson, the ICE MOUNTAIN follows the journey of an iceberg; from creation to destruction and recalls the events which led up to the sinking of RMS Titanic. Each spring, huge numbers of icebergs set off on a 'one way migration' south. How far they travel and in which direction depends on their size, shape, wind direction and strength, currents and tides. During their journey the most astonishing groans, creaks and growls can be heard as they heat up in the sun, crack and melt or roll around in the waves. Writer and broadcaster Tony Soper describes how birds including Glaucous gulls and Kittiwakes, will use them as places to roost and fish. This in turn will attract killer whales which feed on small fish like Capelin. But for mariners, icebergs are to be avoided. One of the most dangerous aspects is that most of the body of the berg is below the surface. About 1/10th is above water and the rest below. "There's nothing, almost nothing you can do to control its behaviour, to determine what it's going to do, and it is just a force of nature."

Producer Sarah Blunt.

SAT 02:00 Helen Dunmore - The Betrayal (b00wgzvb)
We Always Find Them Out

There are rumours about Gorya's health. As Anna and Andrei are given a warning to try to get out of Leningrad, is it already too late to escape the tightening noose?

Set ten years on, the starvation and bitter cold of the war years of Leningrad have been replaced with fear and suspicion. City residents do their best to keep their heads down and their lives unremarkable in an era of accusations, arrests and the midnight knock at the door.

SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 (b04pr1w2)
Art School, Smart School

Brian Eno, Grayson Perry and others reflect on the state of the art school.

British art schools have produced some of the world's most successful artists, designers, filmmakers and musicians. Britain has built up a strong reputation for creativity around the world and politicians are interested in capitalising on our creative brand.

Brian Eno was at art school at a particularly exciting time. In the sixties, art colleges were independent and experimental; students were challenged to rethink what art and art education were about. Brian relates his memories of Ipswich College of Art under the radical educationalist Roy Ascot, and reflects on the importance of this experience. But he also sounds a warning note - he says art schools are under huge pressures and the effects are threatening creativity.

This programme brings together artists, musicians, art tutors and archive recordings to explore the last half century of art education and the state of Britain's art schools today.

We hear the perspectives of high profile figures in art and design - Grayson Perry, Richard Wentworth, Eileen Cooper, Peter Kindersley, and Jay Osgerby to name a few.

Britain depends on its art schools if it's to sustain its reputation for creativity. But are art schools becoming too much like universities and excluding those very people who will produce the innovations of the future?

Produced by Isabel Sutton
A Just Radio production for BBC Radio 4.

Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. There are questions around the boundaries between fact and fiction which Marina believes are central to any consideration of storytelling, since readers' pleasure depends so much on trust built up between the storyteller or writer and the audience.

This week's cast features Luke Kempner, Mandeep Dhillon and Jason Forbes. We look into the future with Vince Cable, take a tour of Buckingham Palace and get fit (a bit).

The programme continues to be a showcase for new comedy writing: anyone can submit material (sketches and one-line jokes) - these can be submitted every week of the six week run.

Details for submitting material can be found here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00kvs8r

The Foo Fighters did it for Chris Hoy in Beijing, Elton John's Rocket man helped Andy Flintoff in the 2005 Ashes and Kenny Rogers' Gambler inspired the England 2007 Rugby world cup team. John Wilson talks to athletes and coaches about the role pop music plays in their training. Technology has transformed the relationship between athletics and the role of music.

The advent of the MP3 player has enabled athletes and their coaches to build distinct playlists for specific areas of their training. When Victoria Pendleton is training for Gold, she listens to her Prodigy playlist with its 136 beats per minute a perfect tempo for her cycling.

John Wilson discovers why many people call music sport's "legal drug". In some research studies, it's been shown as increasing performance by 20 per cent while reducing an athlete's perception of effort by 10 per cent. Music blocks out fatigue-related symptoms such as the burning lungs, the beating heart and the lactic acid in the muscles enabling athletes to train harder and longer. Coaches and athletes will also talk about how even when you're training at the highest level, certain music tracks will enable you to carry on even up to the point of exhaustion. Besides the science involved with the relationship between music and performance, we will muse on what types of music deliver the best results.

WED 06:00 Paul Temple (b038hfpt)
Paul Temple and the Gregory Affair, News of Mr Gregory

Part 8 of a new production of a vintage serial from 1946.

Episode 8: News of Mr Gregory

WED 07:00 Electric Ink (b01jjtn5)
Series 2, Episode 1

By Alistair Beaton and Tom Mitchelson.

A comic satire set in the struggling world of newspapers. Maddox has lost the job of news editor and now faces being sued.

Maddox ..... John Sessions
Oliver ..... Alex Jennings
Freddy ..... Stephen Wight
Carol ..... Polly Frame
Masha ..... Debbie Chazen
Keith ..... Sam Dale
Producer ..... Sally Avens

Alistair Beaton and Tom Mitchelson's satire is set in the world of modern newspapers.

A group of dysfunctional journalists attempt to cover major news stories at the same time as grappling with the demands of working in a multi-platform environment, watching circulation figures plummet and the recession causing half the workforce to be laid off.

At the heart of the comedy is the relationship between Maddox Bradley, a journalist who mourns the day of proper investigative journalism, and Freddy, the online editor who will regurgitate a press release quite happily and call it a story. But they have a grudging respect for the each other as Freddy helps Maddox stay afloat in the world of Twitter, Facebook and podcasting and Maddox shows Freddy how to sniff out the real story. Both are at the mercy of Oliver, the pragmatic Editor more concerned with keeping his job, and Carol, the news editor who believes that circulation will increase if they run pieces on Big Mac eating orang-utans and 'intelligent' skunks rather than Maddox's moral crusading diatribes. And only Masha, the Russian head of online communities, who wants to give away all their content because that is true democracy, knows Freddy's secret; that he's a posh boy from Eton rather than a hypercool kid from the street; well that's what Freddy thinks anyway.

Alistair Beaton is one of our best known political satirists. He won the Evening Standard comedy award for his play 'Feelgood', was a founding member of 'Not The Nine O'clock News' and also wrote 'A Very Social Secretary' and ' The Trial of Tony Blair' for television. Tom Mitchelson is a writer and journalist.

John Sessions takes on the role of Maddox Bradley. John is best known for his improvisation work on Whose Line is It Anyway and Stella Street. Stephen Wight was last seen in Whites on BBC2 and won the Evening Standard Award for Best Newcomer in 2007. He recently appeared at the National Theatre in The Habit of Art alongside Alex Jennings. Polly Frame was most recently seen in Earthquakes in London at the National and Debbie Chazen is currently on tour with Calendar Girls.

THU 06:30 The Gentle Art of Tramping (b01mhwx3)

The tramp, or wayfarer, is a romantic figure - almost part of folklore in this day and age. It conjures up the bitter-sweet antics of Charlie Chaplin or the writings of WH Davies, the 'tramp poet': "What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?"

Keen rambler Arthur Smith has a childhood memory of tramps too -- mysterious figures, both fascinating and a little bit fearsome, men who seemed to appear from nowhere and then disappear again.

And what about the present day -- is it even possible to be a tramp in the modern world? Does this wistful, romantic image -- of Chaplin, of the 'tramp poet' and the tramp of Arthur Smith's nostalgic imagination -- bear any relation to the actual lives of those who might step outside of settled society and take to the lanes?

Arthur Smith wants to find out. And he's guided on his journey by The Gentle Art of Tramping. Written by Stephen Graham in 1926, it's an extraordinary, poetic how-to guide to becoming a tramp, which includes colourful advice on all aspects of the tramp's life: carrybags, boots, tobacco and cooking; how to build a fire, whether or not to carry money, and friends met on the way; scrounging, shelter, and reading material.

Does Stephen Graham's discerning tramp resemble the modern wayfarer? With guidebook in hand, Arthur Smith hears the stories of the tramps of today and considers our attachment to the romance of life without ties and responsibilities, even in the face of its sometimes painful reality.

Producer: Martin Williams.

THU 11:00 A Shepherd in London (b03q59t5)
Flocking to Selfridge's

In the 1920s and 30s, sheep were used in London parks to keep the grass down. Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Clapham Common and Hampstead Heath all had sheep grazing on them, and there was much competition between shepherds to get their flocks chosen for the privilege. There was considerable profit to be made too - for when they were good and fat, the sheep were herded to Smithfield Meat Market to be prepared for the table.

In Flocking to Selfridges, writer Jerome Vincent imagines the experiences of George Donald, a shepherd from Aberdeenshire, who has brought his flock (aided by his faithful sheepdog Birk) to graze in Hyde Park. George is no stranger to the capital, but is always astonished by the way in which Londoners behave, likening the crowds in Oxford Street to mindless flocks of sheep.

It's 1925, and technology is moving on apace. One day in the park, George bumps into a fellow Scot - a young man at the cutting edge of the next new thing. He's John Logie Baird, the inventor of television, and George Donald is able to give him a word of advice.

FRI 06:00 Paul Temple (b039q5dx)
Paul Temple and the Gregory Affair, Presenting Mr Gregory

The tenth and final part of a new production of a vintage serial from 1946.

FRI 11:00 A Shepherd in London (b03s6jv9)
Looking for Angels

Episode 2: Looking for Angels by Sarah Salway

In the 1920s and 30s, sheep were used in London parks to keep the grass down. Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Clapham Common and Hampstead Heath all had sheep grazing on them, and there was much competition between shepherds to get their flocks chosen for the privilege. There was considerable profit to be made too - for when they were good and fat, the sheep were herded to Smithfield Meat Market to be prepared for the table.

In Looking for Angels, writer Sarah Salway has George Donald, a shepherd from Aberdeenshire, visit an Open Air School for children with TB, which existed on Clapham Common in the 1920s. Accompanied by his flock (and his faithful dog Birk), George befriends both staff and pupils, including a young schoolmaster suffering from shell shock, and a Cockney girl who proves herself an able shepherdess.
